Official Jon Gruden Thread XVII

i'm an above average reader, I will start weeding through them tomorrow. I got a target completion date of April of 2024

I just made up the 10 years part but that's how Gruden Threads work. The number of comments and words are probably pretty accurate but the math to get to 10 years misses a step. Minutes must be converted to hours unless you're trying to create a more powerful statement than the data implies. In truth it will only take you less than 10 weeks to get caught up on Gruden history on VolNation. The difference between 10 years and 10 weeks is approximately equal to the difference between insider information brought to VN during coaching searches and reality. jmo.

Freak. Use your Grand Poobah elite status and make Gruden happen. Please. I'll buy you something. Or I'll talk Doyle into giving you a hug. Maybe even Bad Jerry.

Look, I personally like the guy and think that he would be an upgrade. I am curious though as to the obsession that many seem to have with him. The guy is barely over .500 lifetime. Yes he won a Super Bowl, but that team was primarily constructed by Tony Dungy. The cornerstone of that team was a Monte Kiffin led defense. So in light of that I ask, why the obsession? I have never believed that there is even a remote chance that he is coming here to start with, but let's pretend he is. What makes him more valuable than a proven commodity like Gary Patterson for instance? Mods feel free to merge if necessary with one of the many existing Gruden threads if needed.

He's Batman.

People that are loyal fans and boosters would say Currie gave it his best shot. Tennessee fans and supporters have been loyal through good and bad times. They certainly aren't going to be mad at Currie for giving it a great shot. And if he pulls off Gruden or a Patterson or Peterson type hire nobody is going to be faulting him. At least not very many. I just want us to persue the best. If Currie and BOT makes a honest run at Gruden that's all I ask. Same goes for the rest of the top candidates. Nothing is ever for certain, but striving for it is the real test. GBO!!!!!

Not sure why this is difficult to understand for people.

I'm a business and market analyst so here's some analysis for you. Butch got 5 years because of the state of the program he inherited. Now we're back to paying buyouts. The next guy who comes in is likely only going to get 3 years before we're paying his buyout. The way you circumvent that cycle is get someone on board this time that can beat Saban. Period.

On October 16, 2005 Nick Saban took his Miami Dolphins into Raymond James Stadium to face Jon Gruden and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Before a crowd of 65,168, Gruden beat Saban 27-13 in what to date is the only meeting of the two.

Gruden is not the only coach out there with this qualification but he is one of the few.

I know most on here realize Gruden being hired is a joke and would never happen, but had a friend tell me JG was coming, I asked his source. He said a guy on VN, guess I shouldn't have laughed at him.

Names that are realistic and of interest that have been said or heard by boosters I know.

Petrino-I know, but he would win. Boosters either love him or hate him, most hate him
Jim Bob Cooter-apart from the name, he checks all the boxes. Some just don't like the name, which is silly. Would be a great hire
Jeff Brohm-doing well, will be wanted by most vacant schools
Scott Frost-headed to Nebraska
Jeremy Pruitt-heck of a coach, still too immature to be a HC at a big program, think Kiffin

That is a terrible list, terrible

like I said in the OP I am not dead set against it, I just have always found it almost completely unrealistic to expect. So I’m guessing by your analysis you would have Les Miles penciled in at #2? If an actual victory over Saban is the main criteria?

They are either trolling, looking for 'likes', or seeing who is gullible enough to believe it.

Gruden makes 6.5 mil for working 17 dates a year plus more money for his Gruden QB gig. He also gets paid to run/evaluate film on his own. He's not giving up the easiest job in America where he has all the free time in the world to chase the whims of 17 year olds in recruiting or 80-90 hour work weeks.

On top of that, contrary to belief, Jones is not done yet. Boosters have not agreed to help buy out his contract. So, you think if they aren't willing to pony up to get rid of a coach, that they are willing to give up more money (after paying Jones), for a huge name that would have to be the highest in CFB to even think about it? They are whining about Jones' buyout, not happening.

Lastly, and most important, the biggest boosters aren't going to give away any power they may have and a name like Gruden would want full control. Not happening,

You sound like you are full of ****

There is not a "but" after winning a Super Bowl. Besides, the guy is a football junky and could teach incredible fundamentals (not just in a bye week) and develop pro caliber players. Kids would flock to UT to play for him, etc...But it will never happen, imo.

Same here, but the last few Head Coaching searches at UT have become a cluster ***** and humiliating to Vol fans:cray:

Secking came out with a list that involves petrino, brohm, JBC....has anybody with knowledge heard this??

Does secking have any kind of real connections??? I don't know one way or the other just asking out. I know many on here that do at least appear to have some and they are saying it a lot different than him. I don't buy that his list is our top list, and if that is the list Tennessee has shown that they don't care enough about football. But I have to believe that this administration will not settle for anything less than the best we can get this time around. If they settle, they will regret it in more ways than one. I believe. I have to believe. GBO!!!! SOON!!!!
