Official Jon Gruden Thread XVII

I've always had mixed feelings about Gruden. He actually dismantled a champion in Tampa. Never developed a QB there and had poor relationships with some. BUT to be fair, he did build the Raider team he faced in the SB. And their O was very formidable.

All in all, he is the new Madden and name recognition alone should bring in all sorts of talent.

Guessing you don't like reading? It's been covered in the Gruden thread about 1,432,567 times
don't feel like reading through 10 billion pages to get a consensus. A choice if you will, like the one you had to not read or respond to this thread if you so chose .

Look, I personally like the guy and think that he would be an upgrade. I am curious though as to the obsession that many seem to have with him. The guy is barely over .500 lifetime. Yes he won a Super Bowl, but that team was primarily constructed by Tony Dungy. The cornerstone of that team was a Monte Kiffin led defense. So in light of that I ask, why the obsession? I have never believed that there is even a remote chance that he is coming here to start with, but let's pretend he is. What makes him more valuable than a proven commodity like Gary Patterson for instance? Mods feel free to merge if necessary with one of the many existing Gruden threads if needed.

Actually I think Rich McKay was responsible for constructing that Super Bowl winning team not Tony Dungy.

Let me preface this post by saying up front that I know I can gtfo, no one cares, I'm not a real fan, etc. etc. etc.

That being said, I'm not necessarily saying it's Gruden or bust but if they screw this up and either don't fire Butch or fire him and attempt to shove another bargain bin hire down our throats, I believe I am done.

Seriously, as much as I hate to say it, I think I will walk away and find something less futile to invest my time in.

I know where you are coming from. I started going to games in 88 when I was 9 years old. I fell in love with the vols immediately. My dad took me to at least a couple games a year and I was fortunate to buy season tickets as an adult. I gave those up this year and haven't been to a game. This will be the first year since 88 I haven't been to at least 1 game. I really hope they get this hire right.

Haven't read all of the responses, hope you haven't gotten too much crap for it. This is exactly how I feel.

Even if Gruden or Kelly -- if by some miracle we were smart enough to hire them -- didn't work out it sends a signal for 4-5 years that Tennessee is tired of being the budget hire. They would have recruits flock in, and they wouldn't coach their way out of wins like Butch does. The mere act of trying to hit a grand slam hire would be a big message to send out, and the ticket sales, merch, etc. would more than pay the buyout.

If you go "mid-major" hire, it's more of the same and I wonder what % of the fan base throws in the towel. We would be done for 10 years or more.

We are Bama right before Saban. They hired a bunch of coaches, one who didn't even coach a game before he got fired, landed on Shula who was... okay... but stabilized things, then they said screw this and hired Saban.

Because it requires zero thought, he is and will not come here and neither will Chip. It is next to impossible to get them out of the announcing jobs once they take a break.

Tee Martin
Frank Wilson
D.J. Durkin

In that order.

Start w crap on that list and went crappier! Like it

First off barely above 500 in NFL is actually pretty good. He doesn't get to pay UMASS to come play him.

2nd, that defense was Monte Kiffins....the offense he inherited literally put up 30ish points TOTAL in 4 playoff games under Dungy.

Grudens offense tied the Dallas Cowboys for most points scored in a playoff stretch... Hint more per game that Dungy scored in 4 games...

Gruden had his hands tied due to no money available in the salary cap (something that was done before Gruden for there)

Everyone seems to forget that he played HIS Raiders in the Superbowl... His team he built vs the team he took over in the Superbowl.

All in all, he won his division 5 times out of 11 years coaching.
good points.

Let’s play a game.

Let’s assume Gruden is hired.

1) How fast does UT sell out of season tickets?

2) Nike comes out with the chucky/Gruden face UT shirt. How fast does it sell out?

I ask these because UT makes money off ticket sales, donations, and merchandise among others of course. There is a reason Saban can never be paid enough. The money brought to the university far outweighs any coaching salary. I hope UT figures this out

Gruden is a serious football coach.
Gruden is a student of the game as well as an accomplished coach
Gruden wants to coach again.
Gruden has an affinity for Tennessee football. He loves UT football.
Why would we not ask him?

The whole he won with someone's players argument is stupid. If he was a terrible coach how come he was able to win when dungy couldn't?

If he won with dungys team as you say, how do you explain him being one tuck rule bs call from having 2 super bowl wins?
