Let’s play a game.

Let’s assume Gruden is hired.

1) How fast does UT sell out of season tickets?

2) Nike comes out with the chucky/Gruden face UT shirt. How fast does it sell out?

3. How fast do I get buck naked, light myself on fire 🔥 and start running down Peachtree Street screaming incoherently while trying to sing Rocky Top.

like I said in the OP I am not dead set against it, I just have always found it almost completely unrealistic to expect. So I’m guessing by your analysis you would have Les Miles penciled in at #2? If an actual victory over Saban is the main criteria?

Honestly, my actual criteria is two-fold. First and foremost, the guy has to have some promise of recruiting at about the same level as Saban. Secondly, the guy has to be able to assemble a high quality staff.

I don't have any questions about Gruden's ability to coach. I don't have any question about his ability to assemble a high quality staff. I think his persona will be his biggest asset in recruiting but that's not proven.

Stoops and Miles have both beaten Saban but can either recruit to Tennessee at the level required to compete with Bama. I also think staffing decisions may have been a weakness for Miles. Butch seems to be limited to hiring friends. I think Gruden would be the more calculating of our potential hires and I think he'd be the most professional in his approach to the job.

CJG also is mindful of his reputation and will work hard to protect it and add to his legacy...he's not going to ruin his name by not working hard at UT.....He's the very opposite of a promoted MAC-level coach who thinks he's playing with house money.

good observations ! For the most part Butch is too insecure in his hiring of staff and IMO will end up being one of if not the main factors in his inevitable failure at UT.

I’m ready for a change but I don’t think you can accuse Butch of not working hard.

Tee Martin is potentially a program killling hire. I seriously question the sanity of anyone suggesting him.

That’s not to say he may not eventually turn out to be a great coach. But the odds are overwhelmingly low.

Yeah I agree. Martin has no business as HC at a program like ut. I know he won a NC here but lets face it, he wouldn't have sniffed a NC had it not been for that defense. He needs to start small and work his way up. We don't train HCs here. Gruden is a Saban caliber hire, everyone else is 2nd tier. Year 2 we would compete for the East.

First time poster, long time listener. Word on the street is that Gruden was in town over the weekend and stopped at Jai Dee’s on the strip. He bought 2 spider rolls for $19.98 and grabbed a banana milkshake at cookout on his way back to the airport. The cashier told everyone that the only thing he said when he got to the window was “Soon.”

Xcellent job, virgin nationer.
Nice way to pop your cherry, as it were.

Those rolls most definitely should have been comped.

There is nothing wrong with making the call to Gruden and swinging for the fences. You never know what may happen. We know that he is a fan of Tennessee football. He has publicly said so. One of his kids went to school at UT. One thing that really discourages me about going through another coaching search is taking a look at the coaches we have either tried to hire or at least considered in 2008, 2010 and 2012. They have literally all either been fired or on the verge of being from a head coaching job:

2008 - Lane Kiffin (fired at USC)... Butch Davis *rumored* (fired at UNC)
2010 - Derek Dooley (fired at UT)... Will Muschamp (fired at Florida)
2012 - Butch Jones (in trouble)... Charlie Strong (fired at Texas)... Larry Fedora (in trouble at UNC)

There is nothing wrong with aiming high and missing. We have aimed low and missed and that is incredibly frustrating.

Welcome, you can check your sanity at the door.

If most of the insiders' contacts are saying the fanbase in general will be happy with the hire I have to believe it will be Dan Mullen. Kelly and Patterson may be unrealistic. Alot of the fanbase are unaware of guys like Brohm and Frost as far as the legitimacy of their candidacy. All hope for Gruden though!

Mullen I will not like.

It’s a good list.

Mullen is not acceptable.

He is better coach than Butch but I believe he is a worse recruiter.

An good recruiter is a good recruiter no matter where you put them. Especially at a P5 ptogram.

I just watched an interview with Ed O on the SEC network.

Say what you want about the man but he owns his screw ups. No cliches and spoke his mind. Seemed straight up.

It was refreshing
