Official 2014 Attrition/Transfer Thread

I remember the days when Tennessee NEVER lost a recruit or player..ever..

Are you 10 years old, if so I understand but this is common when all you bring in is big time recruits. I remember when Brandon Stewart transferred and how everyone was scared and upset. Just relax and enjoy the wins that will be coming.

With all of the redshirting, grey shirting, blue shirting, purple shirting, EEs, over signing, and other strategies now in place maybe the departures aren't that shocking. Seems like the attrition all used to take place AFTER the final game. Maybe this looks worse than it really is as kids are leaving sooner in order to get enrolled in January at their next stop. Maybe in some cases Butch is doing them a favor.

Just curious, how many have left every year? Even with this many it's not in the ball park with the Kiffin class.

This class is hard to compare to anything. It is just not normal to sign so many and have so many freshmen playing. It will even out but it was necessary to bring in the best and let them fight for playing time.

I'm no sure you know what you're talking about. For 2 years in a row we are going to land a top 5 recruiting class. Which is why we are losing players. The same reason alabama loses players. So we can make room for recruits.

So this isn't Apple to organges, it's 100% apples to apples.

If you lose 7 players off a class does it matter where it WAS ranked. Especially when they were 4 star players.

How long have you been following recruiting? Or college football in genral? This happens every year. The only difference is that this year some of the players leaving were 4 stars instead of 3 stars. As you accumulate a team full of 4 star talent you will lose 4star players due to attrition. There will be and all ways has been attrition everywhere. If all you have are 4stars then you are going to loose 4stars every year. Get used to it.

If it happens every year then when was the last time we lost 7 FR in a year ? How many did we lose last year ?

You just said that it does matter when Saban does it. Make up your mind.

But when you sign 32, losing 7 isn't bad. That puts you down to 25. Which is actually still too many in any class.

But the way things are set up, attrition is a necessity because 25x4 plus redshirts does not equal 85.

The last few years the numbers were way down with Kiffin's recruits almost completely disappearing. Now total numbers are back to maximum levels, but the classes aren't equally distributed. More will leave if they're behind a bunch of guys in their class rather than a class or two ahead of them. I don't think that Butch has some evil recruiting system going on here... Still just going through the process of getting the Kiffin-Dooley train wreck back on the tracks.

Bout time those 2 trains are resting away in the shed of bad memories, with our new 2-yr old train rolling down the track towards the shed of winning memories.

I heard Dobbs is considering the Naval Academy. Naval Aviators have the best shot at becoming rocket men. My brother's sister-in-law who has a cousin who was married to a girl that was friends with a girl whose step aunt slept with John Glenn's brother told me this.

We have now lost a staggering 7 players off this freshman class.

Scott
Helm
Hendrix
Payne
Henderson
Miller
Paulk

Then add Orta, Williams, Jones, Bowles, Gamble, Johnson, Blanc and possibly Peterman.
Losing 14-15 players makes us look really bad and will definitely be used against us in this recruiting class. Jones losing out on the top 3 in-state recruits and 9 of the top 11, maybe we are already seeing how attrition can negatively impact a recruiting class.

Attrition happens. It is normal. Some attrition is absolutely necessary and healthy for the program. If you sign 25 in two consecutive classes and they all make it along with some RS's... you end up unable to recruit underclassmen.

The '14 class attrition does appear to be higher than the norm but not out of range. The greater concern is losing too many guys from the same position groups. DE went from potentially being a huge strength to being thin. I always wondered if Paulk would ever come back from his injury but losing him, Pickett, and Scott along with graduations has made RB thin as well.

This won't "hurt" recruiting because to one extent or another every program at every level is in a race to bring in talent faster than they lose it to either graduation or early departure.

Right now, group attrition is much more of a concern than overall attrition.

Apples to Oranges when Saban has had the number 1 class for the last several years. They lose a player and can plug in a 4-5 star. We plug in a walk-on.

Yeah but it happens everywhere. Btw, I can't believe an actual tn fan is sad that Peterman is leaving. He can't play for mtsu but you're upset he's leaving. I know what he brings to the table as a qb and he isn't even backup material. I'd rather have an unknown frosh than have him. Why? Because I know what kind of player he is and it isn't the kind to bring us a championship.

If it helps with your mental processing, he's not a Vol fan...but he plays one (badly) on here.

Exactamundo! It will probably be this way for a while. We should have expected this! Even if we did expect it people would still use the opportunity to bash the coaches, declare there is "an issue", and rant and rave over and over and over again!
