Official 2014 Attrition/Transfer Thread

Doesn't seem like anything to be worried about. Some of these guys are young and scared that they are getting passed by and only see more talent coming in. If Hendrix and Helm left that would be unfortunate but as Coach Jones said if they don't want to be part of the team he will show them the door.

Many of the same people claiming that the departures won't hurt the roster... are the same ones who excuse the lack of wins on depth and talent.

The one constant is the desire to spin anything that happens away from reflecting badly on the coaching staff.

Also the one thing most crowed about is the recruiting success of this staff. Recruiting classes can only truly be judged by what they actually do on the field. Vol fans felt great on NSD 2007 and 2009.... about players who would never make a contribution on the field.

Potentially losing five 4* players is bad any way you spin it.

Exactly. Would be different if it was a bunch of Jr's or Sr's that have contributed nothing while they were here. Jones and Bowles are no biggies. But Peterman could be potentially very bad, Hendrix, Scott, Henderson and Helm is bad news no matter how you look at it. Scott may not be a huge issue, depending on if Paulk is allowed to return and depending on who else ends up behind Kamara in this upcoming class. But Helm is one we can't afford to lose and losing anybody on the DLine is not something we can afford right now. Helm and Hendrix are two that really surprise me and hoping Sawyers isn't another casualty from the '14 class. Unfortunately DE and DT are stilll areas of concern when it comes to depth..Hoping we can add Phillips and Walker along with Kirkland to the rest of the DLine and front 7 talent that has bedn brought in these last 2 classes. The ones screaming that losing Peterman will have no effect at all is hopefully something we won't have to find out how potentially bad it could end up being. Especially seeing how the last few yrs we have been down to the 3rd and4th string QB and if that happens next yr and potentially get down to a walk on QB then they will be wishing Nate was still here. No he hasn't shown he can be a decent college QB but still has been thrown into bad situations and his OC not helping him any. But still would take him over a walk-on anyday of the week. Hopefully we don't have to find out.

Obviously your getting me confused with someone else. Unless you have your panties in a wad because I called you out you when you started complaining about "trolls" and "negavols" constantly. But I'm not gonna get into a pissing match with you about something that is off topic.

If you have a counter point to anything that I have posted in regards to the subject of the thread that has any merit to it please post it.

The panty waddage is all in your court. I posted earlier, do you have the facts and the names of people that have left? Everything is conjecture at this point. I've just noticed that the bad scenario is always enhanced in your posts. I said, I'll wait for the facts and what actually occurs before I post my rants. You evidently don't care about the facts, and will go on a rant regardless. Btw, I wonder why you were targeted as a negavol, lol.

actually, he lost crowder. Not the same oline as before he was injured. They were getting better then crowder goes down. Also, against vandy we had no one healthy. It was Dobbs and that was it.

True about Crowder but not sure the Oline had gotten better. SCarol and UK have horrid defenses. Well he had Pearson, Howard, Wolf, Helm, Ellis and J.Johnson for the Vandy game. He had guys getting open and players who have played a lot of snaps at WR and TE this season. He just looked awful and wasn't accurate for most of the game. Had quite a few guys open throughout the game and outside of a pass or 2 to Pig he was badly missing wide open receivers and TE's. Even some of those dozen swing passes he completed were off at times. If Vandy doesn't drop 3 more int's on top of the 2 he had already thrown he would have completed more passes to different Vandy guys than his own. Hoping the Mizzou and Vandy game isn't the real Dobb's we will continue to see more and more. The Iowa game will be huge for Dobb's. If he has a third straight bad game it would have to effect the confidence Butch and Coach Jake have in him. We saw the last few games why he was getting redshirted and the issues the Coach's have had with him. Really hope he throws for 300+, makes good decisions and doesn't continue to be inaccurate and turnover prone. A confidence boost in Dobbs will be huge going into Spring practice and beyond.

Because he disagrees with you would be my guess.

Lol, I haven't disagreed with him, nor confirmed his take. I just thought it was funny that he acts as if I'm pissed at him. Read the previous posts leading into this. I said, this could be a problem if it pans out. ive said lets wait and see, and have been pretty consistant in my posts. But, paint it how you want, I call it how I see it.

They were sold on immediately playing time. Staff will need to modify recruiting pitch.

The immediate playing time was there for the taking. Hendrix just couldn't play at the level he needed to to garnish more PT. Scott of course couldn't stay healthy but wants to blame Coach's for his injuries. Honestly Helm is really the one who would shock me the most unless more names continue to pop up. He got plenty of snaps, esp early and midseason but Wolf just caught on quicker and Ellis has really good hands and the ability to get open. I never recall seeing Helm look bad very opten to say keep him the hell out of there. So unless he is homesick or other issues going on that one surprises me the most out of the names out right now.

I didn't see your post, but it's been answered all throughout this thread. Targeted as a "negavol"? By who?

I think there is nothing to see here, this is just the nature of college football when you have good players competing for spots and playing time. We have not had the ability to recognize depth and consistent talent for a few years, we are not used to seeing 4* players leave due to competition or no playing time, but it is common throughout the NCAA. You have to think these guys came from their high school being the alpha male, and everything being about them, now they have to fight for a spot and if they don't get it they are just hidden away from all the publicity.

Look at the positions of the players:

Scott RB - We have Hurd who is clearly our feature back, plus we are bringing in Kamara, and others. He just does not want the extra competition when he already has not seen the field much. Obviously not knocking him, do not know the real situation, but this seems likely.

Hendrix and Henderson DE - We return a good majority of the D line, plus are adding some blue chip players as well. Our line needed the depth and subs this year, if the players were not making it on the field yet, then they probably were being outperformed by others. I hate to say it, because I was excited about Hendrix.

Helm TE - Wolf seems to be our TE moving forward, plus with the step up play of Alex Ellis, Helm probably just feels that he has no use on the team.

I do not know the specific scenarios and I know sometimes family or personal issues present themselves, as well as a player just not liking the school where he is at. But if you look at the positions, the players, and the talent we are brining in, it just seems that they do not want to compete or think the coaches are just recruiting over them. I know we have seen our fair share of recruits leave due to various reasons, but I think this is simply a counter effect of bringing in good players and having healthy competition within the program. If players do not want to stay to work hard, outperform another player to earn a spot, then we do not need them at the University of Tennessee.

I do agree on what you said but not sure about Helm. He played a lot of snaps this yr and the Coach's use the TE very often and love throwing to them. Plus they are used a lot for blocking. Obviously they weren't used enough to help out the Oline. That was one thing I didn't understand and that's why didn't they use a 2 TE set more often to help out with blocking. I even remember seeing Coach Mathews question that several times, especially with an offense that doesn't use a Fullback. But there is plenty of touch's to go around at TE for him to complain about depth or anything along those lines. Guessing there has to be much more to him wanting to transfer.

I agree. I think Helm will stay unless he has a family issue. I think Peterman will stay also but if he decides he needs to leave then Butch will sign 3 QBs. If one of the QBs is the right Freshman then Dobbs may be fighting for his job.

You and I understand you have to take the playing time. Some may have thought it would be given to them. We live in a country where many people have that kind of mentality.

Yea that seems to be the mentality of some kids these days. Just expect things handed to them and get pissed when they realize they gotta work for something. Of course there are plenty of adults with that mindset too. But in the end if they don't want to work for something then they will just be dead weight here and be better off going somewhere else. Just hope we don't end up with many that have that mindset.

I really hope however many QB's we bring in all perform well enough to push Dobbs for the starting job. I think Peterman is probably gone based off several different reports but even if he doesn't transfer Dobb's knows Nate will never push him again for the starters job. Would worry about him getting to relaxed and not worry about getting pushed. And if Dobb's continues to play like he did the last few games and if he has a bad bowl game I would start getting concerned about his potential and overall development. Hope Dormady, Jennings and if there is a third that atleast one gives him a battle and either takes his job or pushes him as far as they can. Think we saw the last few weeks why the Coach's did have some concerns about Dobb's and his development.

It is normal that players leave. It is normal that Fr leave. It is NOT normal that Fr contributors with apparent bright futures within the program leave by the half dozens.

These are NOT the players you want leaving. Some of these are the guys who demonstrated AS FRESHMEN that they were SEC caliber players.

Ignoring bad things isn't the same as "not worrying". It IS something akin to cowardice.
Don't know if a person not worrying about something that doesn't affect his life as cowardice, especially when what the person is not worried about is a football team that he has no connection to whatsoever.

I was going off of what Fulmer and Mathews said after Vandy. Look Peyton didn't always play great versus bad teams. It happens, but they both said not having his weapons hurt a bunch. We ran single wing in the second half because Lane was the only rb we had and he couldn't tote the rock every play. Here's something we don't focus on, last year same scenario against vandy and we lost. This year we won. That is a huge positive. Even against bad teams, some good teams don't play well. Missouri versus Indiana is a good example. At least we won our poorly played game versus a crap team, but I do feel that we played bad due to injury.

With freshman class of 33 I figured 25 would make it to their Senior year. attrition happens everywhere. Not many 30+ scholarship senior classes if ever.

Why would you think 25 would make it? Statistically even the great programs like Bama only maintain about 45 percent of a class that actually become contributors. You are saying over 75 percent? That is dumb.....

I got ridiculed over tge summer when I said I was hopeful we would find 17 or 18 good players out of this class.

Do us all a favor and stop posting nonsense. Dobbs had very few weapons in that game. Why can't you people get that thrust your skulls?????? Also Tebow,McElroy, and others that have actually played the game love Dobbs.
I doubt Dormandy is nothing but another peterman. I don't want another statue at qb. All four teams in the playoffs have running qbs. Dormandy is not that !!!!! And anybody that wants another freshman at qb is crazy.

Even though I'm the one putting the rumors out there, be careful not to form an opinion about a person on a rumor. I just want a place to share news/updates. Rumors welcome, but I hope we are careful not to blast the players.

This is a horrible thread idea...IMO

Yes and agree all a thread of this nature does is cause more rumors and possibly associates those players in a category the don't belong. They maybe true for some but maybe false for another. Attrition happens on every team.

It can't be a rumor that a locker is cleaned out, it either is or it is not. Example, Pig was gone according to rumors last year but yet he was on the field this year. A fact is that he watched the spring game from the stands.

I am sure CBJ knows what is going on with these kids and will make an announcement in due time if warranted,

Which is why I say it takes 4 years to build depth. People on here don't want to face reality that they should judge jones on when he got here. Meaning give him 4 years because dooley ran the program down. Expecting him to keep an entire class when no other coach can do that is ridiculous and it is those unrealistic expectations that cause our fan base to lose their crap when normal things happen. I think our fans have been so long from normalty that they don't know how to act when our program acts like one of the big boys.

If your not worried about it then why are you involved in the thread?

There is no doubt that programs go through a phase of attrition with classes. Most of the time it's because of lack of playing, redshirt possibilities, buried on the depth chart, academics, injuries etc. Rarely do you see possibly five 4* guys that have played and are projected to have prominent roles on the depth chart transfer out. You lose a guy or two that has redshirted or just has not panned out its no big deal. Its not really hurting your "depth".

When your talking about depth, its not about numbers, its about the quality of the player behind the starters.

The sky is not falling and I never said it was. I simply made a counter point to your use of Georgia as an example.

Jim Tressell lost Clarett. Again hard to give examples because you usually don't hear about guys like this because they tend to do nothing once they leave. I can't provide examples from Bama or any other school, because if they were a small contributor as a frosh then they won't be well known nationally. You only know Hendrix because he played for us. But, I gave you Clarett as an example. I'm sure with more digging I could find some. I mean GA lost 10 from their 2013 to 2014 class. I'm sure one of those guys played some as a freshmen.

This should shut you geniuses up. GA has lost 10 players from the 2013 class in one year. I just added it up. Their program is way better than ours currently and has had way more success the last five years. Again I compared the 2013 recruiting class to what was listed on their roster this year. So in one year, they lost 10 recruits/ freshmen. They are not freaking because they know that it is normal. We have been so far away from normal that we don't know what normal is like. Guys step away from the ledge and relax.

Don't believe me, go and count it yourself.
How many were 4* Rivals250 guys they were counting on to help bring the program back?

Ok...so far I have learned that this is all a normal part of class attrition and to Frankie goes to Hollywood it and RELAX!...or have I learned that freshmen that got on the field aren't usually this malcontent and I should panic?

:lolabove: I was just watching some of your old game film, NO SIR EEE. You sure weren't a quitter like today's kids. Here's a screen cap . . . obviously you were on the precipice of a comeback victory here.
