Offense is missing much more than a top level QB

Despite knowing that our lack of talent at QB has hurt us, even with one, we have to be honest with ourselves: The style of offense that we run is going to diminish the opportunities for our players rather than support them. Until we evolve into a more modern style of offense, none of the players that we have will fully meet their potential. Defenses figured out this offensive style 15 years ago, which is why college offensive schemes have evolved. I don't understand why going back to a style that's already been figured out seemed like a good idea.

Until we catch up to the style of offense that succeeds at the collegiate level, we will continue to be hampered by opposing defenses: even with a quality QB.

If we get a qb in there that can actually play that will open chaneys offense wide open. What bray did here in 2012 wasnt luck. He broke some records here. Unfortunately we could only avg like 2 yards a carry so we had to pass every down. If he had our run game we have now things would of been alot different.

I disagree, a quality QB will improve the offense + having some WRs that are not Freshmen.

Of course it will improve it. But it will not be enough to get the job done against quality SEC defenses. This style of offesnive play has a number of recipes on how to be stopped. That's why the majority of successful college offensives are successful: because they try and execute new ideas that don't yet have a sound recipe for how to be stopped. One has to be unpredictable in the modern college game. And doing the opposite is not a recipe for success.

HB showed he can move the ball down the field once he got some opportunities. He needs more timing development. Now if they can develop some chemistry between WRs and Qb and the passing game will open up. They also need a big back to step up so they can have the change of pace back in Gray. Those 2 things will free Cheney up to run a more balanced attack.

Pruitt also needs to back off and let Cheney earn his 7 figure salary.

Let me try putting things another way.


Would you guys rather have an offensive style such as Chaneys? Or an offensive style more closely resembling that of Dan Mullen or Hugh Freeze?

I'd rather have an OC that's as successful with his modern nuanced style as Chaney has been with his in the past.

Hopefully Tiyon Evans will do good things playing for Tennessee

I would take Gus Malzahn's offense over Jeremy Pruitt's

If you didn't notice UT's backfield is young as well. I don't predict a miracle year, but a more competitive team. You can't coach maturity, exposure and experience...these young men will be better in 2021.

Something tells me you are serious with that post. What we need is an OL that plays to it’s potential. Trey Smith wound up playing his way out of the first round, and Mays played his way out of the draft altogether, that is why he is coming back.

Well there’s your main problem, Pruitt had a free year to let Bailey and the young WRs just play this year, especially after the UK game, let them grow together and learn, people wouldn’t be so pissed.

If he’d have been “playing for the future” a lot of fans would’ve agreed and waited for next season.

Instead he rode the JG train too long and pissed off everyone, and that alone to me is a fireable offense. To be that stupid in a year where we weren’t gonna compete for the East or SEC, he wasted a golden opportunity, and needs to be shown the door

Exactly. What was he trying to prove by doing so? That we can possibly get 5 wins? The reward of .500 was not worth the risk we avoided by preparing for the future (HB starting). It's mind boggling.

I like a fast pace offense but you also have to have a defense to back it up. I havent seen what freezes offense looks like..
