More Possible*EDIT* CONFIRMED Staff Changes....

I watched our safeties get clowned in all year. I watched a true freshman in Ty Redmond drastically improve throughout the course of the season. WM developed Gibson, McCoy and Hood. You can make the argument about the transfers all you want. But can you show me where McCoy was a pre season AA, a Walter Camp award finalist and first team honors before coming to TN under WM?

We were missing our two starting CBs this whole year. And look how Hood developed. There is a chance he goes into the first round. Sorry that actual stats and facts defeat your argument because basically you have nothing but your blind hate.
McCoy got clowned the one time he went up against an elite wr and the line was not able to get pressure. Coach garner has made wm look good

😂 😂 I’m glad you could give the 2 yo opinion to the rest of us.
Dude I’ve never claimed to be age appropriate on here. I’ve said this a lot over the years. I blow off steam in here bc I need an outlet from my real life. I work in a super high stress field and find relief valves wherever I can.

I know I was harsh and probably unfair to yalls favorite coach. For that I’m not sorry bc this is a place that fans can be fans. We argue and disagree. And have lively debates. It’s what makes this fun.

My advice, please don’t take me, or yourself too seriously. The last several years of watching mostly bad defense has hurt me. Plus this new era has me questioning how to actually be a fan of what I’m witnessing.

Y’all have a blessed and Merry Christmas goobers

The Dline did not play well this year. They played below last year easily.
They're is blame to go around but to make it seem we were saved by d line is wrong.
D line struggles in run stop and pressing the QB, staying in lanes, etc
We were woefully undersized and soft on the D-line, compared to last year. I dont know what the hell happened to our recruiting/evals for that position coming into this year but to say we miscalculated would be understatement of the year! We were a team playing in the SEC with a "Sunbelt" D-line!

Well. there is one chink in the armor of that statement. One of those corners that got beaten, Ty Redmon, went from a player that looked like a true freshman in his first game against Georgia, to one of the highest graded CBs amongst all freshman in the country. Colton Hood became the lockdown corner other teams struggled against. In fact, if you look at the overall ranking by PFF for Tennessee for the entire year, the top 3 defensive players were Joshua Josephs, Colton Hood and Ty Redmon. When two cornerbacks that weren't even supposed to start, including a true freshman, go from not ready for primetime to top three on the defense, that shows development. I do not remember any safeties on that list.
They are the outliers and exceptional athletes. You are correct the played well but Martinez's total body of work is not complimentary.

Alright people, I guess we're in silly season, NO NFL cornerback can cover for long, they all need pressure from the front seven. The WR knows where he's going the CB does not. That's why it's a TEAM sport, just like the QB and WR's count on the O line the CB's count on the front seven to hurry the pass along. With the injuries we had at CB and for the replacements to play as well as they have, that's WM, the safeties were Banks but some of you heard the bitching about WM when we didn't have good CB's and evidently it stuck. Don't understand how anyone could know anything about football and the injuries and how well the backend played and still bitch but hey it's America these days.

Ok, back to the strength and conditioning coach. Is he one of those new coaches that uses bands and ballet 🩰 routines for training? I remember that experiment a few years ago. Yikes!

Sorry but coach Gs DL severely underperformed, moreso than WMs CBs, getting gashed up the middle and not setting the edge. It’s not on the cb coach when teams run for 200 yards and have 8 minute drives.
And guess what..in football when you don’t get pressure, your defense can’t cover that long when there isn’t any, on any team at any level.
McCoy isn’t a 1st round pick if it was only about being good with pressure.

Agree 100%..Not sure why some struggle with this. Gibson wasn't even top 60 in passes defended last year..( He had 5) and Redmond was even worse. Both are DB's Martinez recruited. And don't get me started on the years prior to 24 with how bad the DB's played and he can't recruit an elite DB to save his life. There's a reason the best job he could get late in his career was C.Fla before he got hired here.
Redmond totaled 39 tackles, 10 pass breakups and three interceptions, sharing the SEC lead in passes defensed (13).

Digging for stats to make our players look worse than they are just to make yourself feel intellectually superior is pretty lame dude.

Gibson had the 9th highest PFF grade in the SEC as a sophomore in 2024 and was above Colton Hood on the depth chart this season. Redmond was a freshman all-american. Willie Martinez has a good coach.

Martinez has absolutely killed it the last few years. Developing guys from the portal and turning 3* guys into All SEC and freshman All Americans. McCoy and Hood both from the portal will be 1st day draft picks maybe 1st round but probably 2nd. From HS, he developed Gibson who did well as you noted. Then he took 3* Redmond and made him 3rd team All SEC and freshman AA as a true freshman. Redmond graded out 4th best in coverage in the SEC this year from PFF at 80%. He was tied for 1st in the SEC in passes defended (13) and pass break ups (10). As an 18yo kid. He also had 3picks.

We should have Redmond who improved all year long and is quite good, and a healthy Gibson back next year at Corner. Having Knowles as DC means we dont need a 3rd starting Corner to play Nickel. He likes to use 3 Safeties instead of 3 Corners to make his 5DBs. I had my doubts about Martinez for the 1st year or 2 unďer CJH...but the past couple years he has developed all these guys into ALL SEC players whether from HS or the portal...and none of these guys were high 4* guys or 5*s. He has a good eye for talent and apparently is good at getting the most out of guys. The posters we have on here bagging on Martinez either don't understand he only coaches Corners or don't know much about our players/football. His track record for the last couple years has been stellar, and he has coached in the SEC for decades. If theres 1 real criticism of him it would be recruiting...but in this day of NIL I think thats mostly about $$$. I am not sure we budget a heap of cash for DBs based on the talent we bring in there vs other positions.

I guess you could make a case that hes not a great recruiter, but thats all conjecture without knowing our budget for each group/position. When it comes to coaching and developing players though, the stats and facts point to Martinez being top notch in the SEC. Hopefully him putting all these guys in the NFL will help us recruit better too...

Without saying "we had a freshman playing", why was Tennessee's pass defense arguably one of the worst in all of power 4? It's more than just "Tim Banks coached safeties".

It was reminiscent of Sal Sunseri days watching teams pass at will on Tennessee's Secondary (DBs and Safeties).

Weak at DT. Slow at safety. Bad LB play. Pass rush wasn’t there like years past. Couldn’t get pressure with 4. When we blitzed it was easily picked up. Our impact player was supposed to be Boo and he wasn’t mentally with us.
