More Possible*EDIT* CONFIRMED Staff Changes....

Some of y'all don't know who DeerPark is and it shows. So does your age and maturity level.
Some of us don’t care who folks are. Age and maturity level on a public message board? Come on and have a bit of fun. Our defense has been inconsistent and terrible. Asking for the standard to be raised, regardless of the delivery, is too much to ask. We need a cleansing and we are going to get it. Hopefully the water boy will approve.

Martinez seems to have pros and cons. Agree with what you said, except that often your freshmen All SEC are due to getting the amount of playing time. It’s not as if he came in and beat out an established starter. I’d say that from my eyes he did improve. I think the DB coach should have control over all those defensive backfield positions, but I know these programs want to have as many on the field coaches as possible.
Who coached up Hood prior to him coming here? He was a finished product and it showed. He actually was turning and making plays on the ball that we have not seen since, well the other portal CB we got the year before. See the pattern.

Colton Hood couldn't crack the depth chart at Colorado and is an NFL player after a year with Martinez. He also got a true freshman ready to have a freshman All-SEC caliber season. Nobody did more with less the last two years than Martinez.

NFL scouts and front office people have valued him and the players he produces dating back to his time at Georgia and his first stint at Tennessee. The list of his NFL products that came in as 3* or lower players is lengthy.

You're not required to like him, but you don't know the intricacies of defensive football if you think he's bad at his job.
Agreed....Redmond is a great case....pushed into a starting role before he really was ready, and developed nicely through the year....Several were skewering him after the UGA TD last in game, and he became a high caliber corner.

I may be wrong here, but the issue I have with the back end of our defense is the safeties. IMHO, safeties and LB play was poor last year.

I'll defer to your evaluation...which obviously runs counter to mine...and say this: If WM is that good, then Coach Knowles should keep him on staff.

In any event, the performance of the secondary next season should be what the FBI calls a "clue".

Go Vols.

This has to be one of the stupidest post I have seen on this site. Martinez has been the worst coach on the whole team. In five years the corners have the worst coached group on the field. Only pure talent has kept us from exploding on the outside.
😂 😂

Thanks for chiming in Miss Martinez. If you think what you are watching is elite defense then I can’t help you.

He didn’t develop Hood and McCoy. They were playing great when they got here. They continued to play well and got noticed bc they actually played in “the league”.

Just curious, were you a fan in the 90s when we had dominant defenses? I’m just trying to figure out what folks baselines are.

Portal extended his career.
Gibson and Redmon.

He sucks. I will say this, he should donate part of his pay to Garner. When the line got pressure it covered up his deficiencies. When don’t get pressure I will refer to the first sentence of my post.

Now run along
The Dline did not play well this year. They played below last year easily.
They're is blame to go around but to make it seem we were saved by d line is wrong.
D line struggles in run stop and pressing the QB, staying in lanes, etc

No he is not. We will disagree there.

He got lucky with portal talent. They were mostly already developed. If anything he taught them the art of not turning and looking for the ball.

Any coach that was part of the zone “coverage” needs to be fired. The one where defenders stayed 7 yard away from relievers, allowed them to make the catch, and missed tackles 10 yards down the field.
The entire DB industry teaches to not turn your head. For many reasons, you can lose your man
,you run slower,etc.
Again, for the probably 20th time. It's called being in phase. That's the technique from pros to CFB. You play the hands. Watch pro, they do the exact same thing.
Very rarely do DB's turn their head because they are taught not to.

Players WM coaches into the pros.
Guess all these guys came in a finished product, were lucky WM never got their hands on them and got out of their schools not learning anything from WM.
This is not counting Hood,McCoy or Redmond.

Martinez has produced six defensive back draft picks over the last five NFL Drafts combined, which is tied for fifth in the nation among coaching staffs over that span

Under Martinez’s leadership, Tennessee produced multiple defensive back draft picks in the first six rounds of a draft for the first time since 2000 when Jackson and Taylor heard their names called in April 2022. The Vols were one of only three SEC programs and eight teams nationally to produce multiple defensive backs in the entire 2022 NFL Draft.

All luck that these players just chose these schools?
Facts and players prove WM must either know how to coach or spot talent.
Unless you dispute all these pro players

The Willie hate is proof that many vol fans are impossible to please. The number of players he's put in the NFL is unmatched. He had 3 All-American type corners on the roster this year in McCoy, Hood, and Gibson plus he had a freshman All-American in Redmond. Injuries aside, his group was inarguably the best corner group in the country but FaHr WiLlie!!

Idiots.

I'd trade Inge to get BJM back in a second. The LB play at times was just downright awful. Too much talent, even with AC out for a bit to look like that IMO. Some people seem to love him, and maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't seen it.

Reactions: Vol in Buckeye Land
I often wonder how old fans are on here. Thanks for responding. Maybe I’m just getting old. But the last several years defenses outside of maybe 1 or 2 play soft. They don’t compare to the 90s defenses that not only wanted to beat you, they wanted to punish you.
Our defenses in the 1990s underachieved. The 1998 defense was great, but that's about it for the 90s. We gave up 41 pts in the second half to UF in 1995 and 35 in the first half in 1996. There were about 7-8 guys on both those defenses that were NFL starters. Chavis is the most overrated DC of all time and your claim is BS. Nebraska ran right down our throats both times we played them in the 1990s. UF scored 41, 31, 62, 35 and 33 in consecutive games against us from 1993-1997 with some of the best defensive players in college football.

This is not getting the attention it deserves, IMO.

We needed a new DC. Checked the box.

We need a new S&C coach. Crickets.

We need a new FG kicker. Ditto.

The most obvious need has been filled. There are at least two losses hiding in the next two needs.

Get. It. Done.

2026 doesn't have to be a rebuilding year. But unless the obvious needs are addressed, then 2027 will be...

Go Vols.
I would add Special teams coach. Losing Eckler had a bigger impact than I expected and Evan Crabtree did not impress.

He’s a freshman. He played like one. Do you actually think what you have been watching is elite? We need to recalibrate what good play is. Because I’m not seeing it. I guess the bar is lower now
Redmond was tied for 2nd in PBUs and tied for 2nd in interceptions. If you aren't seeing it I guess you have no clue to what you are watching. I guess the SEC just doesn't have any elite Cbs.
