I really like Dobbs and are very happy we have him. Without him this season, I think we would likely have 1 win. A couple of things:
1. The comparison to Mariota is unjust and unfair.
2. His accuracy needs to improve. Although I wonder how good his accuracy would be with a good OL, a healthy WR corps and less drops.
3. I see some have questioned arm strength. While he is not a very strong armed QB, it needs to be said that neither was Peyton Manning. Now I realize Dobbs is not in Peyton's league in almost every passing aspect. But when it comes to pure arm strength, Dobbs probably has the stronger arm.
4. My brother and I have discussed somethng about Dobbs and I wonder if it is relevant. We all know Dobbs's class schedule is brutal and I wonder if that works against him in developing his QB skills. Think about it. How many hours does he have to spend in the books to make those excellent grades? I would be willing to bet, he spends a lot of time studying. I wonder what kinds of classes guys like Mariota, Tebow, Winston, Brady, Manning, Elway and Montana took in college? Now, what if he were majoring in communications or another easier major that didnt require much study time? And he had much more time to hone his QB skills and study the game? I am not saying this IS the case, but its interesting.
5. Its possible that Dobbs could go the NFL, but there is also a good chance he decides to be an engineer. All I know is, I am glad he suits up as the Vols QB every Saturday and I really look forward to his senior year!
I agree with pretty much everything you said here. I'll respond in line with your post:
1. The comparison to Mariota is definitely unfair. The only reason I made the comparison in my first post is because that is the QB that he was compared with in OP's quote. Dobbs is a good QB, but he is not the star that Mariota was, at least not right now.
2. I think accuracy is almost more important than arm strength in the NFL. Pretty much every QB in the NFL has to have a legit long ball, but beyond that they need to hit there man in stride on 10 to 15 yard passes and Dobbs has struggled with that some. I was in the stands for the USC game so it was hard to get a good read on his throwing motion, but it seemed to me that he was taking a little off of some of his throws. Earlier in the year he had much more of a tendency to step into the throw and whip the ball 5 yards too far.
3. I wouldn't and didn't say that Dobbs had a weak arm. What I would say is that his arm is not in the top of college QB's when it comes to strength. This does not necessarily rule him out of the NFL, but it seems like a lot of coaches are defaulting to big arms at the moment with the hope they can coach them up.
4. I have a fairly unique perspective on Dobbs' course load considering that I am a senior in Aerospace at UT at the moment. I'm not 100% sure of what his exact course load his this semester, but since he is a first semester Junior I can get a pretty good idea of what he is taking. (Note that I'm sure he takes summer classes but for Aero those don't really help much for in major classes since they are not offered in the summer term. This means that any summer classes he is taking are most likely general education classes, Math, or classes for his minor). The courses he is taking are difficult, but I would argue that they are no more time consuming than most majors would be if you are getting good grades. From a homework perspective there is not much busy work by the time you are a Junior, and most all information is covered in class. It is not necessary to spend hours reading the textbook every night in order to get A's (I know this from experience). All of that is to say that I don't think having an "easier major" would make him better at football. It may make is life a little less stressful, but the time he can put into work for the team would remain about the same.
5. I have heard a lot of people speculate on what he wants to do in the future. It sounds to me like he is definitely going to get a degree from the university and I would be surprised if he declared after this year. After he graduates I would not be surprised to see him try and make in the NFL. After all who wouldn't want a shot in the league, it's not like he wouldn't be able to come back and go to grad school or go on to work as an engineer if the NFL doesn't work out. As far as his specific interests it seems to me like he is mostly interested in working with planes or some other form of aeronautical engineering considering his internship at Pratt and Whitney consisted of working with aircraft engines.
P.S: As an unrelated side note it kills my soul just a little bit every time I hear a commentator refer to Dobbs as an "Aeronautical Engineering Major". The University of Tennessee does not offer a major in "Aeronautical Engineering", Dobbs is like the rest of us Aero's studying to receive an "Aerospace Engineering" degree. Aeronautical is reserved strictly for planes and other in atmosphere vehicles, Astronautical is reserved for rockets and other outer atmosphere vehicles. Since UT Aero students are required to learn about both we have a degree in Aerospace. It is nitpicky I know, but still kills me a little bit when commentators don't bother to get his major right when they say it 20 times a game.
