More NFL Draft buzz for Josh Dobbs

Let me say it a different way:

I think Dobbs is a great leader. He can run.

I believe those are the only real things he brings to the table at the next level.

I'm proud he's a Vol. I'm certain I can be harsh. I hope he plays 15+ years in the league if he wants.

Then prepare to have your beliefs shaken. Pro scouts aren't high on Dobbs as a QB based solely on his running ability and leadership. His passing ability is severely underrated by many around here.

That's true, but I think he will to be a Rocket Scientist.

I hope that means he will be our QB next year.

Go Vols!

You know I believe you're right. I don't see him playing NFL, but, hey, who knows. Definitely believe he's staying at UT...he's a rocket man.

GO VOLS!

NFL teams don't draft based on stats. They watch film.

FYI almost every expert on the SEC networks rates Dobbs as the 2nd best QB in the SEC. Regardless of what those stats say.

Outside of Prescott and Brandon Allen, the QB play in the SEC this year has been relatively poor and certainly inconsistent. I love Josh, but I don't see how anybody could say he's played better than Brandon Allen.

Personally, I'd say Josh has been the 4th best QB in the conference to date...

1. Prescott
2. Brandon Allen
3. Chad Kelly
4. Josh

you said he was your least favorite..did you base that on performance or his personality?

All things equal right now, Dobbs is my least favorite quarterback since I've been following Tennessee, which would be since Kelly. That said, his arm strength is at least average. Comparing strength to Shuler and Bray is putting him in an an upper level echelon. That's not really fair imo. There's too many other knocks on Dobbs as a qb.

You don't alike Dobbs as much as Rick Clausen, Justin Worley, Matt Simms, Todd Helton, or AJ Suggs?

Dobbs needs to legally change his name to Jim Bob Cooter, Jr. Then he would be the complete package. Also, it would avenge the injustice of never getting to see Jim Bob Cooter get out on the field and whup some azz.

there's a qb right now who has a meager 52.5% completion rating (149-275), 13 TDs, and just under 2,000 yards passing that is ahead of Dobbs in next year's draft. To put that in perspective, right now 44 qbs have more yards. All 44 of them have a higher completion percentage than said player.

To further break this down Dobbs is 9th in the SEC for QBR. 6th in passing yards, 5th in TDs. Yeah, Dobbs is a superstar.

He also has more rushing yards than any QB in the conference and tied for most rushing touchdowns.

Dobbs get quite a bit of hate from this fan base.

Josh doesn't get "hate". He gets criticism...huge difference. And typically, it's the same criticism from virtually everyone that, quite honestly, has been for the most part accurate. Right now, you can legitimately criticize Josh's play in three areas.... Consistent accuracy throwing the ball, his seeming inability to have a good feel for pressure/the rush, and fumbling the ball (a lot).

That being said, as someone who's defended Josh since his freshman year, I've seen some nice improvement from Josh in terms of throwing the ball. You can't throw a better deep ball than Josh has thrown to Malone each of the last 2 weeks....Dobbs couldn't make either of those throws last year or perhaps even earlier in the year. He continues to throw the ball very well to the middle of the field, always has. He just needs more consistency and better ball security and you'd see the Dobbs criticism, not hate, subside.

I would take Will Grier over all of them all as well.

Based on what I saw, he's the best pocket passing QB in the SEC.

Here come the PED jokes.

Laughable

No, spewing garbage about our QB and team is laughable. Why tear the kid down? If he went in the 100th round it's more than your sorry azz has done in your life.

There is hundreds over the years of not just good QBs but super bowl champions that have went other than round 1 or 2 in the draft.

As for critiquing him the only thing I would say he needed a bit more of is accuracy. That's even hard to say because of him not having time to really set his feet behind our OL.

As for arm strength last year I would give him a 8 out of 10. You can see he has better zip on the ball this year and I would give him 9 out of 10.

Ask Tebow how that works out

He was a first round pick. Ryan Leaf was a first round pick and couldn't run at all. The NFL is a different animal than college football. Tebow is arguably the best college football player of all time

Gtfo of here with that stupid s#it!

You tell me which QB's in the SEC where the first concern when facing them or their team is the pass and I'll hang up and listen.

Will Grier was/is the only QB I can think of in the SEC where the offense rides on how well he throws the football first and foremost.

Add to that the fact he was a freshman, has no offensive line (and therefore no running game), and who's best weapon is a true freshman....and I don't think it's homerish or crazy.

The four guys listed.....Dobbs and Prescott are more feared for their legs than their arm. Allen is a senior and plays on a team where the first priority is stopping the run. That makes the passing game a hell of a lot easier not being the primary focus of the defense. And I really don't think Chad Kelly is all that good.

So, yeah, if you asked me to pick a QB in the SEC to build my team around based on what I saw this season and it needed to be an NFL style, pocket passing QB.....give me Will Grier.

Thought about it, not enough evidence (and too many anabolic steroids) to confidently make that claim IMO. Grade is incomplete. 😳

Edit: physically and talent-wise, Grier is in the conversation for sure. I would suggest you watch Allen more.....he throws the ball better than anybody else in the sec right now IMO. Kelly is next, followed by Prescott, who's the best overall QB in the conference IMHO.

Great kid, fast and hard to tackle in open space. Bad pocket presence, inaccurate arm and bad decisions on the field. His legs may have won us some games, but his accuracy and decisions have cost us a lot in games as well.

this is very true......So far...Dobbs hasn't demonstrated the ability to--

1. read defenses very well...recognize blitzes that are gonna make the play called a bad play--and get us into a good play...don't know why...

2. make sound decisions when in the pocket against heavier pressure...

In the NFL....Dobbs will not sustain a career by trying to run out of trouble...he will have to discipline himself to stand in the pocket and find the open man and get the ball to him through the air....

IF he can't do that--he won't last....
