Matt Cambell Interviewed (RUMOR)

Campbell sure as heck won't excite the UT fan base.

UT needs a real winner as a coach this time.

Exactly what evidence do you have to prove he won't be a winner at UT? He hasn't coached a single game at UT, so all these statements are baseless opinions. If the next HC is successful, everyone will be strutting around talking smack to all our rival fans, won't matter if they didn't have P5 experience with a winning record, I GUARANTEE IT!!!

I think that they base it on his 4 years at Toledo plus his work at Iowa State.

Yes

Toledo has had MANY seasons just like Campbell got them.....before he got there.

Campbell had 1 good season at Toledo.....and at ISU he has two great wins.....that is it.

Not to mention he didn't have a great playing career nor did he learn from any great coaches.

Hopefully we hear something soon. I think the fan base needs something to bring some excitement back.

With no search firm and supposedly so much interest in the job, I am surprised nothing has leaked about an interview or contact.

So you're surprised by the fact that Currie has limited the number of those people absolutely positively in the know to his absolute most inner inner circle and there aren't any leaks compared to letting a whole bunch of other people doing the job for him? What am I missing here Champ?

Matt Cambell isn’t exactly what I’d consider a slam dunk hire.

To me, it’d seem like a safe hire just because he’s better than Butch and we could do a lot worse.

He should be wayyy down Currie’s list unless somehow all his top targets say no.

Agree

If A-listers like Franklin, Patterson, Petersen, and Fisher (and I suppose Gruden) don’t come, and Mullen just plays us for a raise, who do you want over Campbell, because this is reality? Brohm?

I like both Campbell and Brohm after Mullen.

His "one good season" consisted of a national ranking of #20 at the end of the 2015 season for Toledo. Of course, he had 3 nine win seasons out of 4 at Toledo.

His playing career consisted of being a 2 time All American d-lineman, and Ohio Athletic Conf. Lineman of the year for Division III Mt. Union.

As far as working under great coaches:
He played for and coached under Larry Kehres at Mt. Union. Who is Larry Kehres? Check this out. It is Division III, but listen to this. Kehres retired with a winning percentage of .929, which is the highest ever for a football coach. His record was 323-24-3.

He holds the record for the most national titles at 11, the most conference championships at 23, the most unbeaten seasons at 21. He has 2 unbeaten streaks of over 50 games. 54 from 1996 through 1999, and 55 from 2000-2003.

When he retired, he had won his last 21 conference championships, so he went out a winner. He also holds the record for longest unbeaten streak against conference opponents at 100 games from 1994-2005.

You may say "it's only Div III," but Larry Kehres is the best coach ever at winning. I would think that one could learn a lot from him if he wanted to.

It’s very amusing this fanbase keeps requesting a good winning coach. The truth of the matter is why would a proven winning coach wanna do a lateral move to another school to attempt the same thing he’s already doing. Money doesn’t always move mountains. Patterson will say no because we should have hired him in 08. Peterson isn’t gonna leave Washington for this stressful situation in the south. Chip Kelly?? Lol. He’s going to UCLA. Gruden isn’t coming here. Fuente is comfortable at VT. Franklin isn’t gonna come. Who does that leave?? Oh yes the up and comers. Out of the last 35 hires in the sec only 3 came from power 5 schools. Let that sink in. This isn’t gonna be a huge splash hire like everyone wants. But the fanbase will back the next coach when he starts winning.

I'm not saying it was bad.

But you know it doesn't compare to huge name SEC type schools.

I know all about MT Union, my son was recruited there (didn't go there). I know about Coach Kehres and his son....I also know how good they are.

I know Campbell had a good run at Toledo.....not trying to diminish that.....but Toledo has had many seasons like that.....just Pryor to a few not good seasons.

Campbell is a good coach not saying he isn't......but his resume is not near most of the top names being floated.

Exactly.
Unless they surprise us with one of the A-listers, I like Mullen, Campbell, and Brohm.

UT shouldn’t just be settling for mid major coaches hoping they’ll work out in the long run.

They’re not in the position right now to settle for anyone.

UT has everything that List A coaches dream of having.

Fisher? Are you referring to Jeff Fisher who coached and fired from the Rams? If so, that dude is f'ing horrid.

lots of holier-than-thou football knowledge kingpins in here.

not everyone in here watches 6 hours of ESPN a day, nor trolls big 12 football for info on who the hell iowa state's coach is.

Who is he? I thought we didn't want someone you had to google to find out about?
I'm sorry but you're a DA or don't watch college football if you don't know who he is. The guy has beaten two top five opponents with a walk on quarterback. One of those top five opponents may be in the playoffs. He's winning at freaking Iowa state against top tier programs.

I wouldn't mind having him on board as long as he doesn't have the same drinking habits as his dad:

Lol you can't be serious. I grew up in his hometown and rest assured, he has won at every level.

except a List A coach has everything he needs already... thats why you go and hit a homerun with the next big coach.

I'm not saying he hasn't won.... Or isn't a winner.

But a D lineman at a division 3 school, position coach at Mount Union, BG, and Toledo isn't near the same as many potential candidates.

He had a decent run at Toledo, having one good season, and he won two great games at ISU.

Campbell is also on the list of bottom 10 coaches vs ranked teams.

He is young, and he may one day become a great coach but for now it is my opinion he is not there yet.
