Matt Cambell Interviewed (RUMOR)

Campbell is not a bad coach. He did a great job at Toledo, yeah, I know - MAC school... but he did do good enough there to get a Power 5 gig at Iowa State.

At Iowa State Campbell has done a serviceable job considering what he inherited... the facilities and resources, the recruiting base there as well as Iowa State's pecking order in that recruiting base. His team did knock off some tough opponents this year.

Anyway, Campbell's buyout is $9,575,000. His current salary is $2,100,000, and his performance package is pretty nice. Although Matt Campbell is proving himself to be a good coach on the P5 level, I think UT could get a better-experienced coach with within a $6M - 13M buyout range and not be taking such a big risk. Campbell should indeed be on Curries "Look At... Just In Case Everyone In The Top Five Says 'No' List," but definitely not on his "Short List."

Before this year Campbell was in the bottom 10 of ALL coaches vs ranked teams.

Butch Jones was ahead of him.

Campbell did win two great games this season, but he is still 2-2 vs ranked teams, this year.

Campbell does not have an awesome record. He didn't play under some great coaches, he never learned under any great coaches.

The strong part of his resume.......is two great wins........but most dost know he was the 9th worst coach in the nation vs ranked teams.

If you have to google Matt Campbell after this year, you’ve lost any ability to make a judgement decision on the upcoming hire.

He’s been coaching at Toledo and Iowa State. It’s a miracle he even won a game against a ranked team.

Oh **** no... have you watched this guy talk... can’t do it!

I don't care if he sounds like chewbacca when he talks as long as he can coach. Have you ever listened to Dabo Sweeney talk? He sounds like one of those people that get interviewed by the news after a tornado.

I wonder how many of the people on this forum would've said "no" to Urban while he was at Utah...

The vast majority! I have no idea who the next coach will be, but I'm willing to give him my support regardless who it is until he proves he can't get the job done, just as I did with Butch. I truly believe the AD has made a run at some of the "big" guns and if we don't get them it's not because they didn't try. Doesn't mean Campbell, Frost, Norvell, Brohm or Mullen can't or won't be successful at UT and all the VN "experts" saying otherwise are spewing nothing but their opinion, nothing else. Whoever is announced as the new HC, I hope all the naysayers will give them a chance to demonstrate their abilities as a coach before they run him into the ground.

Usually great coaches would not be in the bottom 10 of ALL coaches vs ranked teams......heck there are many bad coaches and bad teams that aren't in that same "top 10"

Also over the past 17 years Toledo has had 11, 9 win or better seasons.......so they aren't a bad program at all......yet Campbell is still in that list.......but the Pryor coaches of both of those teams aren't.

Hey Campbell is young and he could turn into a home run.......however unless I'm missing something big.......he just isn't there yet.

Sure Tennessee could miss the boat.....but the risk vs what we know is too great.

They will run him into the ground eventually. They are convinced that Butch is the only problem, and getting rid of him fixes all the problems. It won't. It is hard to win when you can't control the line of scrimmage.

Butch was the problem. How is that difficult to understand?

The people crapping on guys like Campbell and Brohm would tell Gen. Neyland the game has passed him by if he rose from the grave and wanted the job back.

Matt Cambell isn’t exactly what I’d consider a slam dunk hire.

To me, it’d seem like a safe hire just because he’s better than Butch and we could do a lot worse.

He should be wayyy down Currie’s list unless somehow all his top targets say no.

Dude has beat two top five teams at Iowa State this year.

So Tennessee should hire someone because of two games?

By this logic Tennessee should hire Howard Bison coach Mike London.........because this year they had the biggest upset in college football history.

Boy am I glad it doesn't work like that.

Horrible analogy.

Hahaha. Only because it's a point that goes against yours. You have to be honest enough to agree that several people on this board would've said "no" to Urban before he went to Florida. They'd say we were too big for him. Point is, most coaches start at smaller schools and work their way up. Pick almost any coach and you can say that.

I think that they base it on his 4 years at Toledo plus his work at Iowa State.

I don't think it happens. If the buyout is as high as people on here are saying, it doesn't seem probable for Tennessee to pay Butch's 8+million and this guy's too.

Why Neyland had a great resume.

Campbell has one good season at Toledo and beat two great teams at ISU......that is pretty much it.

Could Campbell be a rock star? Maybe but we are not in the position to hire someone who may turn out to be awesome. Need someone who bring instant credibility to the program.

With no search firm and supposedly so much interest in the job, I am surprised nothing has leaked about an interview or contact.
