Les Miles thread (merged)

He's a good coach and we could do worse. That having been said I worry about his age. We're actually in a pretty good position here, a lot of returning talent and good playmakers when healthy. The right guy gets a year of conditioning in and we're competing immediately. Les would be good for that part, but he'd have a hard time convincing recruits he'd be here for their full four years. I'm not sure there's enough buy-in for him to coach at UT.

Doesn't bother me a bit to toot his horn. You can say anything you want about stubborness, lack of QB coaching, old offense, whatever. His records and accomplishments in the SEC are second to one, and only one. And he beat him 3 times.

Orgeron is a short timer. He'll do OK, but not good enough. Soon, they will be wanting a coach to come in and win like Miles did.

By your reasoning Fulmer should still be a top candidate any where in the country no matter that he was on a down hill slide when he was fired. I will ask the question again to the Les fans, Why has NOBODY hired him yet to be there head coach ? By the way this emoji was made for Les:crazy:

Huge difference between Miles and Fulmer. One has been out of coachig for a year, the other for almost a decade. Maybe Miles is looking for the best fit for himself.

I remember why Les Miles was fired. He was fired for: (11seasons):

2 National Championships
.770 winning percentage at LSU
5 Coach of the Year awards at LSU
A 7-4 Bowl record at LSU (Never missed post season)
5 top 10 rankings (7 top 15)
Won 1/3 of games against Nick Saban. (3-6)
In the 6 seasons prior to being fired for starting 2-2 his records were 11-2, 13-1, 10-3, 10-3, 8-5, 9-3.

He did all this with his "antiquated" offense and stubborness, no elite QB, lack of player development, gobs of NFL draftees, and old fashion tough guys playing smash mouth football.

He's not qualified. Doesn't meet VN standards for a splash hire.

LSU will miss him in the long run.

And so will we if we are too dumb to interview and hire.

Just simply put ....would lay down on the job and collect a check. Bring Lane home.

Lack of vision. There is no reason for Miles not to be employed at a top program today. If Saban had back to back 8-5 & 9-3 seasons at Bama (ala Miles), and was fired (ala Miles), and ran a predominately boring smash mouth offense (ala Miles), his success (ala Miles), would translate into an instant offer from 126 D1 schools. And Saban is 66. They are extremely similar in the style of football they employ. If saban, at 66, moved on from Bama and said he was not done coaching he would have zillions of offers that very day. Miles is not, and should not be, any different.

He has only been out of coaching this year.

I believe he needed a year off to reflect and regathering. Not hearing his name and the way Currie is conducting this hire that could be a REALLY good sign possibly?

FTFY, and that's the problem. Coaches are not evergreen. I think you'd be hard pressed to find coaches who had a sustained decline, even a modest one, then reclaimed their national championship magic in old age. Paterno kind of did, but I think that's pretty much it. Some just lose their touch as they get older.

Can't say he's lost his touch until he's re-employed to find out. I doubt he has.

I would certainly think Miles is on the short list. He's the type of coach that would be a good fit. However, if Currie is doing his job properly, he is evaluating a list that he and his group want to evaluate. Miles is available now, and could be announced now, but that wouldn't be the prudent thing to do. The due diligence process should run its course, and whoever is announced, will be done at the appropriate time. everybody has their favorite. Miles is just my #1, but there are some pretty good candidates in the pool this year. Some I wouldn't want just because they would be doing there current employer the same way Kiffin did us to come here. And you know how we all chime in on that. Call it ethical behavior, or whatever the term, but it is a two way street. Or should be. I would totally respect Frost for turning down any offer from any school to honor his contract with UCF until it is appropriate to move on to bigger and better things. Or Taggart, or whoever.

How does the original post have 24 likes is the thing I'm trying to figure out. I mean I know our fan base has a couple of crazies but 24?

Because it's factual and truthful. And he would be a great fit, and a very good coach here. But, the fantasy coaches list overshadow rhyme and reason. granted there is a long list of capable coaches that can be presented. Few are in the cards, interested, or the right fit.

Three QB's under Miles were drafted.

Russell - bust in hte NFL but a great college QB at the time
Flynn - 7 years in the league as a backup
Mettenberger - free agent this after 3 seasons, but prob should still be a backup somewhere.

Not exactly terrible in eleven years to have 3 of your QB's drafted.
Russell & Flynn were recruited to LSU by Saban. Mettenberger transferred to LSU.

We will not be the test site to determine whether he has or not.

Les Miles would win bigger at Tennessee than ANY coach Tennessee could get.

Guy is a proven winner in the SEC.

Qb play is a problem at LSU going back to Saban there. It's a running qb region that's their recruiting base and they can't pass on those kids because they are rated so high. Even though the #'s they put up passing in HS have more to do with quick slants and bombs vs teams with no safety's not a region that produces QB's that have to read defense's

Teams did want him last year. He wasn't going to take any job. Needed a year off too I'm sure. Like Urban Meyer did

SEC life is tough!

He had/has a contractual obligation to seek employment, of course, its a good faith obligation. He has constantly said he wants to coach again (of course, he can't say otherwise)... but at the end of the day, I will be somewhat surprised to see any of the larger schools go in that direction as far as head coaching is concerned. LSU sure would love for some school to pick up the tab.

True on this.

LSU-SIU who you like as a top 5 options that can be had?
