Kevin Steele

Steele is nothing more than a serviceable DC and has been with nearly every team in the SEC and a few outside of the conference. No.

Finebaum said Steele was interviewed during the Kiffin hire and he wanted it bad. Said he has never seen someone who has been with many other places to still have so much love for his alma mater

Sounds like what we may need. Not sure if he can lead as a coach tho. That’s the big question.

Bring him and some other VFLs on staff it might work

Everyone else is tossing names out, I am entitled to do the same in a thread about Kevin Steele.

Not particularly enamored with bringing Steele or Tee back nor Cutcliffe.

Tee hasn't been in my top 15 since Jones was fired. Too soon to make the jump as a head coach.

And Cutcliffe backed off the job once already when they tried to dictate his staff to him . No way he goes for the scenario you spelled out with Tee as his OC/HC in waiting.

I'm not telling you what you can or can't suggest. I'm just presenting the argument that seemingly would refute your opinion, which as you said, I'm entitled to do.

As for your last paragraph, I'm not saying it has to be Cutcliffe, but someone who isn't looking to keep the job for the next 10 years. Tee coming as OC only, with no other title or guarantees, is a step back. It's a nice thought, but not very realistic.

I agree. It's a nice thought but not very plausible.

Don't see Martin settling for anything less than the head job.

I think after 15 years, Steele has earned another shot at a head coaching job. Just not sure he should be a top 5 option here without bringing in a strong OC.

Steele would be really wise to walk into a de facto death penalty situation. Work wonders for the rest of his career. Oh, wait, we are a 10 win program with the right staff.

He's a damn good DC. Tee Martin as an average OC.

Would definitely take him over Tee, if we are going the VFL route.

If Gundy turns us down we would be crazy not to bring Kiffin back. Steele is an amazing D Cord but his HC record sucks.

Steele went 9-36 at Baylor. It was a while ago but I worry about his abilityas a HC.

That being said I would get behind the hire. Not great but we could do worse.

Head coaching record
Year Team Overall Conference Standing Bowl/playoffs
Baylor Bears (Big 12 Conference) (1999–2002)
1999 Baylor 1–10 0–8 6th (South)
2000 Baylor 2–9 0–8 6th (South)
2001 Baylor 3–8 0–8 6th (South)
2002 Baylor 3–9 1–7 6th (South)
Baylor: 9–36 1–31
Total: 9–36

Umm... I take it he got better?

If we are going to go here, why not Mike Leach? I simply do not understand this logic. The guy’s HCing record is abysmal. He has a good year as a DC and now he is head coach worthy? This is insane.

Another rumor that Kevin Steele is a backup plan. Report: Tennessee Volunteers showing interest in Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator Kevin Steele

For clarity, I'm not saying I support this, just sharing news.

This is dumber than hiring anyone I can think of. Guy has had a good season at auburn, but look at his overall record, fired at Clemson, Baylor, ran off from LSU. Good God, surely we are not at this level. Although our athletic director might think we have.

Finebaum stated that Steele lost in the most bizarre way before the kick six play. Can someone explain the play??
