Kevin Steele

... Both parties desperately need the other. Nobody in the NFL will ever give Saban another thought. Alabama has financially commtitted themselves to the point of being the football equivalent of "all in." They're like a married couple that accumulates substantial wealth together, divorce becomes just too damn costly.

A zillion thread responses distilled into four sentences.
Whoever said attorneys were incapable of being succinct....

Why would you bring guys whose recruiting ties are in the midwest and northeast to the deep south?

He asked them to come. They said no.

As far as the blow up goes, you maybe right on Sabans end. But I have learned to never underestimate the power of irrational millionaires when it comes to their passion.

Regardless of Steele's move, I think he's a strong candidate for our HC job in '08.

Craig T. Nelson has a better chance of being the head coach at UT. Check out Steele's record as the head coach at Baylor. That tells you all you need to know.

They didn't want to move. How is that some sort of reflection on Saban?

They chose to not follow him. That is rare in coaching. Typically when a HC leaves he brings some of his guys with him. None chose to take him up on his offer.

I find you make a lot more money being succinct. It allows you to get much more done.

I have to assume that you're talking about freeing up more time to post on VN. Do you actually get to bill for typing time?

Trying to figure out why Saban's assistants at Michigan State not following him to LSU has any relevance at all... Saban didn't seem to miss their presence in Baton Rouge.

It should not be that hard to follow Tidwell. I was pointing out that he will bring with him to bammer an ego and attitude that will be different than they are used to. Saban may very well do a great job and win a NC. I however am not ready to hand the trophy over yet.

Then color me ignorant, because I'm not following.

What you call "ego and attitude,' some of us call enlightened self confidence.

You will find few who are and who appreciates self conf than I.

There is a difference in self confidence and egotistical. Surely you know the difference.

Simple. It shows that those who work for him do not want to follow him and that is very rare in coaching. Usually a HC will want to bring those whom he trusts the most with him to a new job. None of his assistance chose to take him up on his offer. Just pointing out that he is not what bammer has had. Now, that may very well be what they need and he may win big often and early. But I think it is foolish to think that there is not a possibility of a blow up at a place like bammer.

One sad thing about Steele's hiring IMO is that the "crimson taint" he will pick up from working for Bama will probably make him unacceptable as a UT coach in the same way that Cut is unacceptable to many Bama fans.

You're missing a key point. Saban came to Michigan State from the NFL. The guys he "trusted the most" at that point woul have been in the pros. I think if one looks, he inherited a lot of assistants at MSU.
