Jumbotron Update

I totally understand how the AD works and is funded, but you're completely fooling yourself if you think how they spend their money isn't justifiably scruntinized by the academic side.

If this were the case, then they would be canceling all the stadium renovations immediately. And funneling every dime of the new ESPN money into the University's general coffers. Instead it was a freaking news story because the athletic department is thinking about finding some way to "share" some portion of that money with the school to which it rightfully belongs. The University is in desperate financial shape, and yet here we are spending tens of millions of dollars to install a club level in the football stadium.

The athletic department is basically an independent business that licenses the University's name and trademarks. If Mike Hamilton had a big fat check from a donor to pay for two massive jumbotrons, he'd put them both up.

Eh, like I said, even if a hypothetical north side jumbrotron is just as unnecessary as the Stokely update, Pratt, or the luxury boxes, considering it would be built where a now academic building is located and that it would be the second one would gather more scrutiny.

The new JumboTron is not being paid for by the UTAD.

The Vol Network/IMG is required to purchase a new one for the stadium by 2010, per the contract signed with UT two years ago. It is discussed in the third paragraph here: IMG College

Who an I kidding, he'd build another in a heartbeat. Probably just prop it up against the Hill or something!

That only states that it has to fund upgrades to the current video board at Neyland, not a new one.

True, but the scrutiny would not be actual oversight by the University or anything; it's just a question of PR and what happens to catch the fancy of the press. E.g., nobody bats an eye at $200m worth of stadium renovations, but everybody freaked out when Fulmer was going to get paid an extra $125,000 to be Petersen's "assistant." I think it's pretty clear that Hamilton can spend whatever he wants on that stadium and nobody's going to say anything, even as they're cutting academic programs and laying off instructors.

Even he probably couldn't tear down Alumni Gym though.

It was not worded clearly. IMG is obligated to provide 75% of the cost of the replacement of the jumbotron, which I'm told is going to be about $6 million on a total cost of $8 million. The rest will be funded by directed giving.

IMG previously contributed 75% of the cost of the center-hung scoreboard at Thompson-Boling and 100% of the cost of the LED ribbon boards at Neyland and the LED ribbons that will be installed at Thompson-Boling.

ok whats your inside information that I dont have? oh ok none. I was simply saying that just because we are replacing the board does not mean that we are getting some giant one. All we know for a fact is that we are getting it replaced becasue they dont make parts for the old one. So why dont you quit being a jackass and acting like an expert when you dont know any more than we do

well, i was trying to dig up the quotes for the info i had heard about the new screen when my connection went down. i come back to find you've thrown a tantrum like a bratty, 5-yr-old girl. hope your mom let's you have that chocolate cone next time even though you're wearing your new pink dress.

It's happening children. All of the contracts have been awarded. By the way, I understand the biggest Diamond Vision screen is in Japan, and ours will not be that big. But it will indeed be huge.

so it might look something like this?

That's about right.

Ditto.

I never saw a link.I checked Diamond Vision - The First and the Finest The only thing I could find on the web was two listing for this thread.Of course if it just happened?Who knows.

I hope it comes or is true.

The contracts have been signed, but an official announcement will not come for a couple of weeks. Possibly at/around the spring game.
