Redshirt sophomore forward J.P. Estrella of the University of Tennessee men's basketball team will not play Wednesday night against Oklahoma.

Estrella has been ruled out due to left foot soreness. His status is day-to-day moving forward and he will continue to be evaluated.

The Scarborough, Maine, native has appeared in 23 contests for Tennessee this season, including starting each of the past seven. He is averaging 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 61.6 percent from the floor.

I think we see Ament at the 4 tonight. Not all the time but we will see it. Also interested to see which guards are subbed in tonight. Berg surprised me.

Big guys with foot problems especially when they're as young as Estrella is not a good thing. Hopefully nothing but definitely concerning this season and long term honestly.
Yao Ming comes to mind on this issue. I think he's a bit shorter than JP but still applies.

Definitely concerning. If he’s out extended time, or for the season, we’re cooked. This team is heavily dependent on his front court presence. He’s the only reliable post threat on offense. We become pretty one dimensional when he isn’t on the court.

I haven't seen numbers yet, but the bigs had solid night. Burg's steal and streak down floor was a pleasant surprise.

It’s a precautionary thing mostly, it sounds like. We desperately, desperately need him as healthy as possible going into the dance. For us to make a serious run, we HAVE to have him out there. There’s no other consistent 3rd scorer on the roster.
I’d hold him out for a couple of more games if it might help…

It’s really too bad. JP might even have been a G league player if he wasn’t so fragile.
Huh? He has two years of eligibility remaining and just put up 16 points against LSU playing with a sore foot.

JP needs to work with a specialists in strengthening his lower body. There a lot of techniques that could help him.

I try not to comment on injuries in a way that would infringe on privacy. it doesn't take a detective to note that JP has been very cautious with his lower body over the early part of this season, and played a game that is limited due to that. I've pointed out before that the physical aggression and jumping we recall from his Freshman year have been absent. Over the last couple of weeks, he began to move people with his lower body, rebound better, pivot strongly from back to goal position, and jump on shots. Soreness is not a great sign. The positive results of the X-ray aren't a complete picture. Foot surgeries for big athletes are particularly dicey as the required healing period doesn't delineate when it's safe to fully return to all action. These kids know how to play through pain, but you can't do that with a foot post surgery. I hope he heals and plays, but I really hope his foot can heal fully long term.
