JG vs Harrison Bailey

Lol. You found a 3 minute video, where the first 4-5 highlights were from the 1998 Arky game (10-27 passing that game, including 0-4 on what would’ve been the final game-losing drive had Ratliffe not made HIS game-changing play.....also recall that Tee didn’t throw the ball even once on the game-winning drive)......and the 1998 Florida game when Tee threw for 64 yards. We won that game because our defense, led by Al Wilson, forced 6 turnovers.

Anybody who watched that season knows that Tennessee often had to overcome Tee’s poor play from the pocket to win games that year. Tee had a handful of moments, a handful of key, pivotal plays that helped win some games, but that was usually because his play was so poor throughout the game that the game was much closer than it should’ve been in the first place. Nobody being honest could ever say that Tee put the team on his back and won games.

Also, the following year, his senior year, he completed 54% of his passes and threw all of 12 TD passes vs 9 interceptions.

Game. Manager.....at best.

Well he sure as hell wasnt a playmaking qb who could put a team on his back. Tennessee won with an excellent running game and defense when Tee was our QB.
Done a pretty good job putting us on his back with that Syracuse scramble getting us in field goal range for the w

Well maybe not the game winning drive but he did have a great scramble to keep us alive.
I do agree with you on the next season we lost some play makers and his numbers dropped

We've had 2 top 5 classes...in the past 15 years...
Thanks for digging that up. And honestly guys I’m not throwing shade on JG. I’ve said this a couple times already but I don’t view being a “game manager” as negative. Hopefully this year he’ll loosen up and let it rip.

And, JG is not a "game manager QB." He just hasn't had the guys around him to really showcase his talent.

Rick Clausen? Now THAT'S a game manager.
If he’s not a playmaker and he isn’t a game manager, what is he? It sounds like you think a game manager is a guy who sucks and I’m not saying JG sucks. I’m just saying his style is conservative.

Can someone please tell me the difference between high school game speed, and SEC game speed, and then why we expect a high school kid to unseat a 3 year starter that will actually have a decent OLine by next year?
It's happening more and more. I'm not saying it will, but it's becoming common

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this here, but no. We can't recruit like those other schools. The days of consistently pulling top 5 classes are over. How many top 5 classes have we had in the past 15 years? If you all want to live in the 90s and early 2000s that's fine, but I try to set my expectations on recent trends.

We recently had a top 5 class after a year of suckdom. So, if we started winning more consistently, it's definitely feasible that we can start pulling in top 5 classes again

I think you’re misunderstanding my opinion of JG. I’m not criticizing his ability. I just don’t think his style of play will win many games for modern day Tennessee. Put him on the 98 team and we may still win it all. He’d probably win 10+ games for UGA this year if he were their starter. Teams like that need a guy who can make all the throws, knows where to go with the football, and who doesn’t make many mistakes. That’s JG.

I do think he’s good enough to make an NFL roster... I just don’t think he’s a guy who is going to make plays when things break down or when drives begin to stall and those are frequent occurrences when you face the caliber of opponents we face without an elite supporting cast.

Gotcha. I can agree with that.

Semi Pro tip: Comparing a HS QB with a D1 College QB isn't really legit. Bailey might be legit in high school and garner accolades and some high rankings, but that doesn't mean he will pan out in college ball. Everyone knows UT has had their fair share of those folks. Still, hoping Bailey comes into his own once he gets the chance here at UT.

TL: Completed 176 in 255 attempts for .690%, and 41 Touchdowns

JG: Completed 121 in 176 attempts for .688%, and 11 Touchdowns

BM: Completed 280 in 428 attempts for .654%, and 34 Touchdowns

JTS: Completed 211 in 414 attempts for .510%, and 27 Touchdowns

HB: Completed 212 in 335 attempts for .633%, and 29 Touchdowns

It’s all about Touchdowns.
Just to be clear on your hard science, you’re comparing QB performances from different competition levels and years in their development. Pitting Maurer’s senior season against Bailey’s junior season against Shrout’s ONLY season against JG’s freshman and sophomore seasons IN COLLEGE comes across a lil in exact...just sayin.

Harrison Bailey looked good but he was throwing the ball to a man. JG looked great in high school too. Bailey will be our starter, but I bet it will be his sophomore year.
Ball has to get there...accurately and on time. Nobody marked off points for Montana and a Young because of Jerry Rice.

No, these are all Senior in high school seasons only, except for Harrison Bailey whose last season was as a Junior, which was clearly pointed out.

So mebbe should’ve been left off? How about competition levels and surrounding talent? Or on Shrout only having one season to form a narrative on? If you judged Maurer on his first season alone, how jazzed would you be?

No, no, this started with comment 55, which compared stats of Lawrence, Guarantano, Maurer, and Shrout in each of their Senior seasons in high school only, and included Bailey’s Junior season in high school as that is his last season in high school so far. Please see comment #55.

I'm not saying it'll happen, but it does happen. Lawrence did it at Clemson last year. I'm not sure how many years their other qb played, but he left because he lost his job to a freshman.

Lawerence is a once in a decade type QB. That's why he can in and took the job. Harrison is good, but not Lawerence good. Lawerence threw for like 11 or 12k yds while in HS. We'll be fine with Bailey.

Underperforming your physical talent, isn't the same thing as being a "game manager" QB. Game manager QBs typically have relatively mediocre or poor individual stats, but still manage to sustain drives, and win games.

Pretty much the exact opposite of JG in 2018.

Also, game managers typically have a balanced offense and not being pressured constantly.
