I’d rather trade 13 other OL. QB could have been Peyton last year and he’d have struggled to lead the team to more than 7 wins. This time next year it will be better to judge JG, with what should be upgraded OL.
We have been saying upgraded OL for that last 10 years, I'll see it to believe it.

Why? It's all relative.
Not really. Averages can be skewed by YAC. If you throw 50 passes 2 yards behind the line and the receiver takes each of those 12 yards, you average 10 YPA but you haven't completed a throw past the LOS. If you throw a bunch of short passes and 2 for TD that are long, then it looks like you have thrown short to mid yardage passes. YPA means nothing if YAC is added in if the discussion is the QB's passing ability.

You act like JG threw more short passes than anyone else in the league

You act like he didn't throw them at all. The bubble screen was a go to for him. I actually was comfortable at times IF we could get to 3rd and 4 or 5 knowing that he would dump it out quick and we could pick up the first. JG throws a better bubble screen than pretty much anyone that I have seen at UT in a while.

Edit: FTR, your response had absolutely NOTHING to do with my post.

No idea. All I did was wonder what his YPA was compared to others and go look it up.
I found a weird dichotomy. UT wasn't good at 3rd down conversions... but were good at pass plays over 20 yards. Basically, the long passes helped the average while the ineffective third down passing hurt.

SJ, your posts are spot on....you have to have years coaching kids under your belt. The way you are describing things, you have to have seen them on the field (diamond or ice) knowing that for some, when the light comes on the sky is the limit and for others, no matter how physically talented they are, the light just doesn't come on.
It applies to more than sports... It applies to business, military, and most everything else.

Years ago I ran across a basic training soldier who was pegged to a high end computer job with military intelligence. He stayed in trouble and I believe got processed out because basic soldier skills just absolutely blew his mind. He could understand algorithms... but couldn't stay in sync with military drill. He couldn't march in step. He was always late when a march command was given. He struggled to clean his weapon well or make his bed right.

It seems to me you're wanting to say he isn't very smart but are afraid to cross that line.
No. Lots of "smart" people can't make quick, instinctive decisions. It isn't about IQ. It is about an "it" that some guys have without a particular parallel to IQ.

How many smart people do you know who are terrible drivers? They don't anticipate other drivers. They have poor road awareness. They can't judge distance and spacing well. Some people are smart but just have to think about things longer than others before making a decision.

Jarrett Gaurantano has played 21 games.
To some capacity he has played in 21 contests over his career thus far.
In 21 games...he has thrown for 2,900 yards and 16 tds....
That's like 140 yards PASSING and .75 TD's a game.

From everything I've heard about the kid personally is that hes' a good kid who practices hard.
This is stuff you can read about in articles.

But he's supposed to be playing QB!...Okay. The most pivotal position on a football team.
How can...AND WHY SHOULD anyone defend that lack of production?????

I've seen people say "He's actually pretty decent, it's just that...(etc)"
AYFKM?!

How about this just this year? 2018...12 games?
-12 tds in 2018...in 12 games...

Bottom line is that he can’t make his teammates better. They aren’t buying in, so he can’t make them rise up and win.

The best OL's in CFB do not give their QB 3 or 4 seconds to make a decision. JG MUST get better at that.
I agree, but we've got to eliminate the plays where the QB can't even complete his drop before the pressure gets there; especially from the DTs.

The bubble screen was a go to for him? Not any more than any other quarterback.

So yes, my resume did have something to do with your post, because I was saying JG threw normal passes for a quarterback. We ran a pro style offense, much like Missouri.

Cough Tyler Bray cough
Cough Casey Clausen cough
back off....CC is my favorite all time Vol...😎

And TB..I seriously wish JG was a little more like Tyler. Fear of a mistake was not something that slowed TB down in his QB role. He for certain threw a couple of picks that he didnt need to but he had forgotten all that crap before he put his helmet on again.

And CC really is one of my all time favorite Bols.

TB had a tude issue. But he was Dooley's last gasp. I didn't appreciate CC until he was gone. Really missed watching him play. Listening to him speak, that boy was dumber than a box of rocks.

Both of them are great examples of QBs for whom the game had slowed. The basics had become routine and the rest was pure processing input. Good football mental game to go with the physical aspects.
