Is Pruitt a top 10 coach and recruiter?

How so?

The title of the thread is asking the question, nothing you have listed so far puts Pruitt in the realm of a top 10 coach or recruiter given his existing record, possible record, or his existing recruiting.
You can definitely make the argument after we hit complete rock bottom with the 0-2 start and Qb problems that Pruitt has done some of the best coaching in the country. Top 10 coaching and maybe top 5. That is why your post is misleading and after tonight’s win , 100% incorrect.

Your point is?
I don’t care if he’s not even in the top 50 in either category, Vols just won their 3rd SEC game and gave BUBA all they wanted! I admit first 2 games game poor coaching, calling what it is, but if you can’t see the over all growth and improvement then I doubt you wanna see it.

I don’t know. I would say certainly not today but can he be? There are positive signs and negative signs so it is too early to tell. The biggest negatives are not having this team ready to go early in the season and they sure came out flat tonight in a super important game as far as reaching a bowl game goes. Also, the team is very undisciplined, which really surprises me with Pruitt. It actually reminds me of Cuonzo Martin as I was very surprised at the poor discipline with which his teams played as well. Given the poor discipline displayed by terribly stupid penalties and constant misalignment on defense I’d guess he is actually too lenient on players when the cameras aren’t on. Another thing that makes me think this is JG constantly changing plays, as we’ve heard and seen. Something made JG think that Bama call was ok and, I could be wrong, but I’m guessing he thought it was ok by Pruitt or he wouldn’t have done it. The biggest positives are the improvement of JG, improvement in line play on both sides, and of course the team getting some big wins and playing Bama tough. My gut tells me no he isn’t top 10 material but it’s still too early in his career to say for sure. Let’s enjoy finishing this season strong and see how he does on the recruiting trail and on the field next year.

Right now he's cracking the top 10 in the SEC, up from 13th earlier in the season.

Looking at the SEC, is he better than Mullen? Saban? Ogre? Malzahn? Smart? Fisher? All those guys are vastly more accomplished and are recruiting better than Pruitt, can't see any argument to suggest he's a better coach or recruiter than any of them. Is he better than Dabo? Better than Franklin? Better than Riley? Better than Peterson? Better than Brian Kelly? Harbaugh? Herman? Brown? I could keep going on this list for a while. Pruitt might, if we're really lucky, join the ranks of top 20/25 coaches in the country. Right now he's not even close.

Let's be realistic and take emotion out. I would disagree that this is top 5 coaching or top 10 coaching in the country. I do think there's an improvement. Tennessee has gotten better but one has to admit that the schedule has gotten weaker the last few weeks also. And there are still some inexcusable things happening in games. The penalties are way out of control. Coming out of a timeout with 12 players on the field against Kentucky near the goal line could have been disastrous. That's on the coaches for sure. I do thinkthey are doing much better than they were at the first of the year but we got lucky a little last night too. We should have really dominated that game against Kentucky. They demonstrated they are not very good. They only had 12 or 15 yards passing and still almost beat us. I am as happy as anyone with the win though. Let's just not get carried away. One other thing, recruiting is a big part of coaching also. I definitely don't see us being top 5 or 10 in that category.

He is getting better and learning from mistakes. I think he can be a top 25 coach but I am a believer that you are what the record says you are. But you can also see signs that the record will improve. just have no idea what his ceiling is.

What does Gurley have to do with this?
My mistake. Thank you for pointing this out.

From Chaney's bio:
"Led by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Chaney-coached players are featured prominently throughout the NFL and include Browns running back Nick Chubb, Patriots running back Sony Michel, Ravens running back Alex Collins, Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd, Bears wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, Dolphins’ offensive lineman Travis Swanson and Broncos offensive lineman Ja’Wuan James, among several others.

Since returning to the college ranks in 2009, Chaney has coached 38 NFL Draft picks and 11 1,000-yard rushers. Overall, he has coached 59 NFL Draft picks and 12 All-Americans."
No Gurley

I see no evidence this is the case which does not bode well for the future.

Top 25 perhaps? Is this what we settle for in the future?
How in the world is this even a topic? I watch football and it is clear that Pruitt and staff made adjustments at halftime. How long has it been since that happened? First time in years I feel the trend is bullish. Tn historically is not a double digit winning team. We just need to get back to our historical records and seize on breaks that come our way. The Arkansas game in 98 comes to mind. We were in it, caught a break and scored to move on. This team shows signs of being coached. It is refreshing. I especially loved the qb run to ice the game.

Since when is screwing around in the first half of the game, and adjusting at halftime indicative of a 'top 10' coach?

Not to mention coming out of a timeout with 12 men on the field at a very critical juncture. It moved the ball from the two down to the one . If Kentucky scores there basically Tennessee would be toast and that would have been on the coaches. I'm happy with the win though.

No one can possibly know when he is less than two full seasons in. We are improving and our young guys are being coached up well. No one, in his first two years as a head coach could be called a top ten coach. That doesn't mean he won't be one but two years isn't enough time for anyone to know.

How many years would you be willing to allow?

Finishing 7-3 after an 0-2 start and being competitive with Alabama and Georgia even with the talent discrepancy. You betcha he is a top 10 coach.

Finishing the season 7-3 will not neagate the first 2 losses, it also will not propel Pruitt into the 'top 10' of current coaches, no matter how much you want it to.

Pruitt's defense couldn't contain an offense led by a WR turned QB who only attempted 7 passed the entire game. We were 1 bad play from losing to Kentucky, that's not 'top 10' coaching no matter how low you set the bar.

Considering some of the fundamental mistakes that I've watched this team make, I'd have to say, no, Pruitt's not a top 10 coach, at least not IMHO

I would like to see any of these coaches have 63 healthy players and nearly half of them being freshman.

If we win out to hit 7-5, I think he will absolutely be a top 10 coach as early as next year. I’ll expect to be right in the thick of winning the East next year if we win out. Young talent all over the field and more coming in, we’re in damn good hands with Pruitt.
Just in bad need of a good QB at present and dealing with the emotional displays on the sidelines. What do we expect anyway? The man agreed to take over a train wreck. Also consider the dumbassery we displayed in public nationally and we're lucky to have such a good staff period. Sure as hell seems to know defense at least. Can't predict the future with him but I've been optimistic since his hire.
