If we do go into Iran, it will basically be us walking in. We were already on the ground there when we went after that pilot and the couldn't do a damn thing about it except get killed. We did lose some aircraft, but that was because they were stuck in the sand and we destroyed them.
We have total air superiority like at the Battle of the Bulge. And cloud cover and darkness are not a problem like they were then. They would be toast, just like their stupid boats were yesterday.

Yeah it probably doesn't mean anything that they are based in Iran. Birds of a feather, flock together. In other words, usually like thinking nations become allies. Just like we used to be allies with the Western Europeans.

Al Qaeda leadership was based in Afghanistan in 2000 when the USS Cole was bombed.

The men who actually planned the attack received training in Afghanistan in the 90s

I really don't think it will be necessary to go in in a hostile manner but Iran is not in near the same position as the Afghans and they don't have their terrain. One of the biggest obstacles in Afghanistan was the rugged terrain. There also is zero threat to aircraft in Iran. We could cover it with A10s and Apaches with no fear.
My guess is that Israel will take care of Iran on land and we will take care of the Strait.

what threat to air was in Afghanistan?

iran has plenty of rugged terrain. they have two major mountain ranges, one that divides them from the Caspian Sea the other divides them from Iraq, Tehran sits near both. they literally border Afghanistan. where Iran is flat, its desert which isn't great terrain. their major cities are typically surrounded by mountains where most of the locals are shepherds.

They aren't killing people with their weed or cocaine. That's ridiculous. We're literally policing a waterway and attacking boats without any process to confirm their intentions.
