I Created a CFB Ranking System

Fascinating stuff. Amazing number of undefeated teams at this point, but in terms of genuine quality it does look mostly like Alabama followed by everybody else.

CHAMPIONSHIP EVE RANKING (with CFP/AP/Coaches):

1. Alabama (10-0) - 183.4203 (1/1/1)
2. BYU (10-1) - 172.6840 (17/14/16)
3. Cincinnati (8-0) - 172.4612 (9/6/6)
4. Clemson (9-1) - 167.5525 (3/4/3)
5. Coastal Carolina (11-0) - 165.7662 (12/9/12)
6. Ohio St (5-0) - 164.0349 (4/3/4)
7. Notre Dame (10-0) - 160.5327 (2/2/2)
8. San Jose St (6-0) - 155.8778 (24/25/25)*
9. ULL (9-1) - 155.7009 (19/17/18)
10. Buffalo (5-0) - 152.0507 (UR/23/UR)
11. Iowa St (8-2) - 146.8471 (6/8/8)
12. Miami (8-2) - 144.9398 (18/19/19)
13. USC (5-0) - 143.3007 (13/13/13)
14. Marshall (7-1) - 142.5750 (UR/UR/UR)
15. Georgia (7-2) - 141.9251 (8/10/9)
16. Texas A&M (7-1) - 141.2214 (5/5/5)
17. Indiana (6-1) - 141.1310 (11/7/7)
18. Boise St (5-1) - 141.0730 (UR/UR/UR)
19. Tulsa (5-1) - 140.7743 (23/20/20)
20. Miami (OH) (2-1) - 140.1233 (UR/UR/UR)
21. Oklahoma (7-2) - 138.1144 (10/12/10)
22. Ball St (5-1) - 137.9233 (UR/UR/UR)
23. Texas (6-3) - 135.7437 (20/21/24)
24. Florida (8-2) - 135.6924 (7/11/11)**
25. Appalachian St (8-3) - 134.8925 (UR/UR/UR)

* I want to give a little shoutout to San Jose St. While the idea of them being #8 is absurd, this is a team that has not gotten enough attention. They barely cracked the Top 25 in all polls, but it took until this week. SJSU is, without fail, one of the worst teams in the country every year. They have awful facilities, in the absolute worst place in CA to recruit. And yet, here they are at 6-0, headed to the Mountain West Championship Game. Major props to Coach Brent Brennan and the entire Spartans organization.

** While ranking Florida at 24 is ridiculous, I actually think it's less ridiculous than the Committee having the Gators at #7. They only have two wins over teams with winning records (Missouri and Georgia). I can't help but get the impression that the Committee is trying to bolster A&M's resume in case some craziness happens this weekend.

NY6 Bowl Matchups as of today (and the G5 can't get into the CFP):

Sugar (CFP) - #1 Alabama vs. #7 Notre Dame
Rose (CFP ) - #4 Clemson vs. #6 Ohio St

Fiesta (At-Large vs. At-Large) - #2 BYU vs. #13 USC
Peach (At-Large vs. At-Large) - #3 Cincinnati vs. #8 San Jose St
Orange (ACC vs. SEC/Big 10/Notre Dame) - #12 Miami vs. #15 Georgia

Chances are, only one G5 school is getting into the NY6, so call it BYU.

Is margin of victory the main discriminator between Bama and ND calculations?

how did A&M hold onto it since they lost to Bama?

Bama was ineligible because they'd actually won a real championship in the recent past. Bama's actually won several non-title matchups since Butch created the award.
At the time they hadnt won anything. Didnt win anything last year either.

Had won the SEC the year before that and the NC the year before that. It's like a fighter that misses his weight cut. The fight still happens, but he can't win the title at the lower weight class.

It's neither here nor there. If Bama had won it off A&M (and were recent champs not excluded, the belt never makes its way to A&M), they'd have had to surrender it anyway.
