How would you rate John Chavis as a Defensive Coordinator?

He was one of the best when his defense were attacking and blitzing. That being said 3rd and Chavis is a saying for a reason. My stomach churned whenever we were hanging on to a late lead. 2001 UGA and 2008 UCLA still gives me nightmares.
The chief's defenses were great and he was the greatest (except for his defensive moves that you mention and "third and Chavis) when he had a team load of all american type players.

Monte definitely was better. Wilcox also just didn’t have a roster full in NFL guys to use.

Chief had "NFL types" all along at UT. Which brings me back to what I said in another post in so many words "great players make great coaches". Now, maybe the coaching staff makes really good prospects great players, not just the head coordinator. But the "head of defense" becomes "the great"(his really good assassinates move on to become the "head man" elsewhere). Chief, Monte, Sabin, any "great defense coach" are only as "great" as their players.

3rd and Chavis.

I liked him as a DC. Most losses were due to the Offense not scoring enough points. I expect at least 30 per game. Score 30 and then let’s talk about Defense.

I expect the defense to give up no more than 10.

I like Chavis. He tried to give the A&M game to us, but we kept turning it over. I wonder if that Texas heat makes the ball slippery?

All games are lost due to this problem.........

Not sure if there's ever been a better DC that struggled as much with 3rd down soft coverage vs blitzing and when to do either, as Chavis.

Giving up 48 straight when you have a 16 point lead in the swamp is the definition pooping the bed. Letting a backup Qb run draws at will in the SECCG also falls in that category. We had record setting offenses both years too. I would probably throw 97 in there too even though i dont think anyone was going to beat Nebraska that year.
I’ll give you the sec championship game, but when you turn the ball over 6 times in the swamp, the defense has no chance.

He was Great in his earlier years, as he’s gotten older I think he’s had a tougher time building relationships with the young men he’s trying to recruit and coach. He will have a great defense every few years but I think his days of having feared defenses year in and year out is over.

Thought he was very good against traditional offenses and below average against non-traditional ones.

Plus extra points deducted for his tendency in giving up game winning drives.
His defense was a huge reason we won a national title. He did some things differently that year that he discontinued and I will never understand why.

It's hard not to have mixed feelings... I don't care about the job he did at other places. Just off the top of my head, these are some games we lost with Chavis as DC, where a stop on the opponent's last possession would have won the game, but we allowed a game-winning touchdown drive of more than 60 yards instead:

'96 Memphis
'99 Arkansas
'00 Florida
'01 Georgia
'05 South Carolina
'06 LSU

Also, the decision to move DE Leonard Little to a stand up LB in '97 was bizarre. We took the best edge rusher in the country and stood him up. Dick Vermeil even commented on how dumb that was as head coach of the Rams (who drafted Little) ... but, we will always have '98 and that defense maximized what it had. So, like I said, mixed feelings.
To be fair in some but not all of the games you listed our offense hardly did anything and pretty much hoped the D could win it for them

People forget how good Chavis defense was in 2004 and 2005. Over those 2 years we only gave up 30 or more points 3 times. That's the definition of doing enough for your offense to win.

No not for UT. In general. I’m basis to UT so I don’t include any coaches former or current
That’s confusing. So you don’t have Chavis among your top UT DC’s, but don’t have any names ahead of him?

Even though it didnt show under Botch, I would take Shoop over Chavis. Every other place he's been he did an excellent job. I loved Chief as a player and his guys played for him but just dont think he was quick enough to adjust to schemes or teams with comparable talent. The level of talent he had at UT and LSU was unbelievable, but we saw what happened at A&M and Arky.

Generally overrated. But, he's a solid coach who definitely had his moments, both in certain games and certain seasons.

I'd rank him an A. Our defenses were always pretty solid. Sure, there's a few games you can bring up when the defense didn't play well but you can games where Bellichek or Monte Kiffin, Buddy Ryan had bad days.
