How would you rate John Chavis as a Defensive Coordinator?

Not really. His 3rd and Chavis and giving up game winning drives followed him to LSU, he wasnt good at all at A&M and hasnt been good at Arky.
Played for a NC and got beat by Bama after beating them in a DEFENSIVE struggle earlier in the year. I give a **** what he’s done at these last two stops. Great at UT was the subject matter...A++

One of the most overrated DCs in my lifetime.
And he also got cute with the Mustang package and other tweaks. You can be great and flawed. He’s a great example.

The great Mustang Package, Chief is lifetime coordinator and average at best. I'm glad his defense is @ another team...…………………..

It's hard not to have mixed feelings... I don't care about the job he did at other places. Just off the top of my head, these are some games we lost with Chavis as DC, where a stop on the opponent's last possession would have won the game, but we allowed a game-winning touchdown drive of more than 60 yards instead:

'96 Memphis
'99 Arkansas
'00 Florida
'01 Georgia
'05 South Carolina
'06 LSU

Also, the decision to move DE Leonard Little to a stand up LB in '97 was bizarre. We took the best edge rusher in the country and stood him up. Dick Vermeil even commented on how dumb that was as head coach of the Rams (who drafted Little) ... but, we will always have '98 and that defense maximized what it had. So, like I said, mixed feelings.

C+ when having elite talent he was pretty good but he brings nothing imaginative or unique to the table. A below average recruiter.

I’d welcome the man back if he chose to do so for whatever non football role.

That being said...

He’s one of those coaches that for me was only good if he had a loaded roster. So I wouldn’t put him in my top D coordinators.

I didnt care for him since the SEC title game loss in 2001 -- was clueless how to stop the LSU backup QB from running at will

Add 05 Bama, 06 Air Force (win), 07 KY (although Cut's offense bailed us out for win ), 08 UCLA.

Kids loved playing for him but he hated recruiting.

Had Fulmer and other dogs for recruiting...like Rodney Garner. Cutcliffe was no closer either...at UT or Ole Miss. knock him?
