Hendrix opens up about transfer

I love me some Butch Jones. Was hoping for him even before he was hired and defended the hire after people were like "who is he?". He's done nearly everything right to this point. However, his coaching style and the berating of players on the mic is absolutely going to turn some players off and I wish he would tone it down "a little". The players leaving are highly rated and talented players that are not leaving due to drugs, bad attitudes, grades or any of the other normal reasons that players usually transfer for. I think coaches can learn something from these types of transferring players and use it to become better at what they do. Not wholesale changes mind you...just tweaks.

One thing we've observed from this coaching staff is that they do not appear to learn from what we see as mistakes. They fit the definition of stubborn. We will know in the next 2 years if being stubborn pays off dividends for them or if it becomes their downfall.

These "kids" are all different and have different personalities and life experiences. When I was in boot camp, some couldn't take it. They didn't like being away from home or they couldn't take the day to day pressure. In order to get out, they jumped out of third story windows, slashed their wrists, or pretended to be insane. You have to grow up and be a man some day, and D1 football is not nearly as bad as boot camp. I Feel sorry for Hendrix, but he will grow up one day.

Just a young man that didn't like being so fare away from home, It happens...wish him well...he has the talent...just needs the drive...

Some aren't mentally prepared to handle the big time

You can't hold these guys hands. They either can adjust or move on

He supposedly has the tools, but not the mentality to play in the SEC or for UT at this point. (It is TOUGH and most of us couldn't do it)

Maybe he will get it and be very successfull at his NEXT stop.

Best of luck. I hope he finds a good fit.

"Just my relationship with the coaches and how they talk to people. It just kept getting worse as the season went on."

I loved how my Kindergarten teacher talked to me...

My Daddy & coaches & teachers were a little more realistic.

4+4 = 7 wasn't good enough for them for some reason.

THANK GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!

It seems like in the REAL WORLD they keep score too.

You people are really incredible.

I want Jones to succeed as badly as any of you. But this knee jerk reaction to any and everything that might indicate that Jones or his staff aren't perfect or do not need to change some things has reached a ridiculous level.

None of us know how these kids or Hendrix in particular were talked to. What I do suspect is that unless you have some severe emotional or mental issues... you have a level of respect that you expect from people who talk with you. I doubt there is a poster on this board that would allow someone to yell at them and curse at them very much.

So we DO NOT KNOW whether he was just too sensitive or if he was subjected to disrespect that went over the top. We shouldn't pretend that we do.

Hendrix's statements are bad. His departure from the program is bad. Stripling's comments demonstrate that beyond question. They were frustrated and didn't want him to leave. It isn't part of some grand plan. It does not appear to be because of competition or a standard of play ste to high for him to reach. It may have been caused unintentionally by the coaches' words and actions.

The very, very best thing we can do is hope that the coaches make changes. Adjust their approach so they do not have a repeat.

These transfers all hurt to varying degrees. None are coming back. There is now a big recruiting gap with DL's... maybe as bad or worse than Dooley's '12 whiff on OL's.

But.... it is a done deal. Hopefully THIS STAFF can compensate.

The thing that bothers me the most about Coach Jones berating the players is that is all Derek Dooley ever did. If we lose to Iowa, it will be five straight losing seasons and all the coaches will have done is cuss and insult players. You think that would cause you to reevaluate your methods of motivation.
Jones and Dooley learned this from watching Nick Saban, but even Saban has learned to be less harsh on his players. Other things Jones and Dooley got from Saban are the "process" and an overly complex scheme where the players tend to make lots of mistakes, like when Alton Howard ran the wrong route at the end of the Florida game. This year Saban simplified his offense with Lane Kiffin and Alabama had the best offense in the country.
I am tired of following Nick Saban and the "process." But if we are going to copy him, we should follow his more recent changes like a simplified offensive scheme and going easier on the players.

Well, there are guys his age sitting on an outpost, getting shot at, and thousands of miles away from home and they just can't quit

What? That's like saying you shouldn't change a job you hate just because some people are in the military. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

It would be nice if you all didn't jump to conclusions about the kid...maybe, just maybe, there is more to the story than what is publicly discussed.

You need to stop mentioning Dooley and Jones in the same breath and more people will take you seriously.

I'm not sure the coaches' perceptions are constrained to what we see. I would hope they have more insight to the situation than we do.

Sounds like a hell of a lot of speculation on your part.

Sounds like Hendrix wanted the coaches to baby him instead of treat him like a man.

So now you're saying its Butch Jone's and the staff's fault for these kids transferring? Do you expect them to treat these kids like babies just because they have to take a little criticism? These kids got to realize that they're not in high school anymore where they have a say in it. This is big boy SEC football. If you're not willing to compete for a starting job or take criticsm, then maybe they do need to transfer. I want players who want to give their all for Tennessee and I'm sure Butch Jones wants the same thing.

I read the article, and it doesn't sound that bad to me. I doubt this hurts in regard to recruiting, but it will hurt the d-line slightly. He was going to be a good player. With a class of 30+ recruits in 2014, you had to expect several kids to leave.

Dude, are you serious? Have you forgotten about Kahlil McKenzie, Shy Tuttle, Andrew Butcher, Darrell Taylor, Marques Ford, and Quay Picou.

Possibly Kyle Phillips and D'Andre Walker. We are going to have an incredible front 7 in 2016.

Maybe they will want to be VFL, if not go get someone else that does.

i was in the military and find your comparison ridiculous. Those men over there are trained for months on end to handle that pressure, and even then plenty of them crack.

Or just continue to look for the easy way out--time will tell.

so when UT players transfers, they are quitters who suck.

but when you all are begging for UAB and Nebraska transfers, you love them all

pathetic.

It's why he is says he is transferring.

"Mean ole coaches use bad language. Makes me unhappy."

Having said that, if that is truly the reason then he is right to move on, because I mean I'm sure bad language is never used by coaches in other college programs. :birgits_giggle:

Saw this today and haven't saw it posted.
]Hendrix 'just wasn't happy' at Tennessee

Question I have is... Are the coaches too hard on players or are the kids too soft? He said "the way the coaches talked to the players got worse as the season went on". Wonder if he's talking about practice or their relationship outside of football? I'm going to guess they are hard on them in practice, but what coach isn't?

To answer my own question with my opinion, I feel kids today are too coddled. They're superstars at the high school level and are given special treatment. Then, they get to college and are just another fish in a shark pond.
