From Mr. SEC.com - Tennessee implicated on some tapes...

The key word in this is "implicated." I have been implicated in some pretty messed up stuff and thats just by my wife. Anybody can say anything. That being said, our last coach was, hands down, the greatest in the country at drawing attention to himself and to the program. The problem was, IMHO, I think he honestly believed that any attention was good. However, he was not an idiot. He either thought Cecil was being too cavalier about the process or he didnt like the price. Which, btw, if you had started a thread on VN the night before NSD and could guarantee everyone on here that we could pay a player $175K and guarantee we would have another crystal football in the case by next January, you would have had it within a couple of hours. Well, our last coach would have paid it out of his pocket just as quickly. Cam may be the only one other than him that knows whether he was really offered and, if so, how much was offered. He would have wanted that to be one of those last second surprises ]Posted via VolNatio

I'm not sure Kiffin thought he needed a 3rd QB in the mix. He had Simms and Bray competing for the starting job. I dont see Kiffin changing his offense around to showcase Cam's running ability the way Auburn did. Auburn was really an ideal fit for him, plus you have to give Auburn's OC a lot of credit for retooling his offense around Cam Newton. :twocents:

Another thing, why offer money before you offer a scholarship?

We disagree as to why. Possibilities include:

1) We lost out in the Newton pay-for-play "sweepstakes" (after all, many of the posters on this site, claim it's "obvious" Auburn is "guilty" and "must have" paid Newton to get him to commit there);
2) We got cold feet when the NCAA came sniffing around in the early fall of 2009;
3) We decided Matt Simms was so much better than Newton that Simms deserved an offer and Newton didn't.

I consider #2 the most plausible of the 3.

4)After the staff looked at Newton's record, they decided that (a) he was not a suitable leader for the team and (b)his criminal background would taint the reputation of the staff as unacceptably mercenary in the eyes of alumni.

Kiffen actually chose Simms over Newton because "he fit our offensive system".

Taking sacks, as opposed to eluding them must have been a prodigious part of our "offensive system".

Kiffin said the fact he didn't offer Newton a scholly doesn't make him look to smart! I am from Missouri on this one. Until I see or hear tapes it is a bunch of garbage. If these two knuckleheads from Miss St. turned over tapes and such to the AA and didn't include these alledged tapes then they are guilty of withholding evidence. Which really hurts their case because they had a chance to bring down the whole Auburn deck of cards and missed it. No logic in the Vols offering. Keeping it simple he did not fit Kiff's offense end of story. Don't worry about it. GBO!!!

That's the pattern with Auburn, by the way -- they were the only other program connected to Cam's recruitment to not formally make an offer, and they only did very late. Makes it look more suspicious, not less.

The tapes are supposed to come out in about 2 weeks. Problem is, what are they doing. Editing? Supposedly, you can hear Cam in the background. Wonder if UT would consider suing Cecil/Cam if they know it's bs. One of you lawyers or law students let me know, if you don't mind, if it's possible.

What would be the basis of a lawsuit?

Supposedly the tapes will be analyzed by voice experts tomorrow. Who cares if Cecil mentions UT? It proves nothing except that Cecil was trying to make Cam’s buyer move faster and/or pay more. It happens all the time (Buy now or these others will). Doesn’t mean it’s true.

Agreed. Unless there's actual evidence UT tried to buy Cam, there's no reason anything would happen.

Who is the main source of this, anyways? Moore? So basically we have a Bama fan pointing fingers at Tennessee and Auburn? Sounds credible.

None of this matters to us. It can only hurt Auburn.

You know, I hoped that AU would skate, since they got screwed in 2004. But since they won the NC, their fans have been so friggin abusive that now I hope they get it taken away from them and all their wins with Cam voided.

Not pretending to know anything about the legal system, but he clearly meant on the basis of libel/slander.

However, I don't know if that would hold up, since this was allegedly in a private conversation, not publicly written or spoken.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t that require malicious intent.

Finebaum talked about it this morning on a local station in Nashville. He said he didn't feel like this is credible.

Finebaum's not credible. I can't believe that Vince or Derrick one hasn't kicked his skinny @$$ for that interview with Babs.

Cam really wasn't the type of QB Tennessee was looking for. No one could have predicted that he would be a Heisman winning and National Championship QB and Tennessee was looking for a pro-style QB. Why would Tennessee pay 150,000 for a guy they didn't think fit their system?

Who's to say that Cecil Newton wasn't just claiming that Tennessee offered to drive up the price for Cam to another school?

This is what I believe happened.
How many times have you walked into a store and told a sales person that you would love to buy an item from them but you were just at another store and they offered it to you for a lower price? Pretty much the situation here. Cecil wanted more money so he calls school X and says schools Y and Z just offered this much so if you want him you better offer more. From what I've seen theres no ACTUAL PROOF that shows Tennessee ever offered anything, just Cecil making claims to another school and we all know how honest and creditable he is, LOL.

So, unless these tapes have a member of our staff or a known associate actually making Cecil or one of his associates an offer, then I doubt anything will come of this. Honestly it just sounds like radio host that doesn't like our program, doing anything and everything to bad mouth our program and make them look guilty, when in all reality we probably did nothing wrong and there is no actual proof that we did anything, just a moronic dad doing whatever he can to get more money from a school for his son. And well, its not exactly a secret that this radio host is a big bama fan, so I'm actually more interested in the tapes he's probably hiding, ignoring, or is trying to have destroyed that mention his favored program in this whole mess.

A fellow Vol fan ask me today if I heard that its being said one of our people offered cam newton money to play here,and its on tape?

If this is true can we get in big trouble?

Hint: The answers you seek are hidden somewhere in this thread:banghead2:

I would be surprised if there was a tape of someone from Tennessee offering Cam money. That would be pretty stupid. If it's just evidence that Cecil claimed Tennessee, offered, then who cares? The NCAA already knows Cecil claimed Auburn offered and it didn't do a damn thing. And are these tapes even new evidence? Or are these the tapes we've known about for a long time that somebody pathetically tried to bring up again?

For Tennessee to get in trouble at all, it would need to be known that someone offered. It would be pretty disturbing if there's evidence of an offer for a player we didn't need, didn't want, and didn't get.

Ok what scum bag would even want to record this crap? I mean who does that? Geez. The witch hunt is on. I dont think kiffen had anything to do with it. Kiffy had to know the crap was going down at usc. Plus kiffin was all about a pro-style qb.

Exactly! His words were we ran a pro style offense and that's why he chose Simms over Newton.

And thats why we recruited the other Sims so long (another clearly non-pro-style QB), right? Kiffin was only good at 1 thing -- lying.
