I can almost promise you that you as a UT fan have nothing to worry about. Cecil was absolutely lying when he told MSU that UT had offered money. He was simply trying to convince MSU to match a nonexistent offer. MSU officials knew about these lies before Newton committed to AU. I have a very solid source when it comes to MSU's involvement up until when they stopped recruiting Newton.

This could be very interesting. It is the last thing we need right now. Another accusation against a program that is already in trouble with the NCAA. I hope it is not true.
Like others have said, this doesn't compute. Newton was not the type of QB Kiffin wanted. That was made very clear. If he really did make an offer to Newton, then I can't imagine what a guy like Bryce Brown must have been getting paid to be the back up for Hardesty.
Then you skipped his recruitment. We leaked the fact we were aggressively targeting Newton in May, continued to target him throughout summer, then suddenly dropped him at the time the NCAA came sniffing around, with one of the lamest pretexts I've ever heard (though the story was evolving and constantly changing) -- how we didn't want him because he didn't play 1 half of a game we went to see. Anyone who bought that should have had their head examined.
FYI -- this story has been out there since the late fall of 2009 in enough circles that it didn't take much to have heard it, and have heard the $200,000 figure in particular.
If this is it, it is nothing but unsubstantiated hearsay and should be nothiung to worry about. I don't care what Cecil had to say about Tennessee because he has no credibility (or at least shouldn't have any).
Now, if they have tapes of Kiffin or somebody else at Tennessee offering the money, then we have a real problem.
Link? Because everything I've seen says the opposite
That's sounds reliable. Never mind the fact that the article said he would compete with Crompton for playing time. Some sites are proprietary, but here's a public rebroadcast from a Florida site of what some Tennessee sites had reported for their subscribers.
Rumor: Cam Newton to Transfer to Tennessee? | Gator Tailgating
Cecil Newton is not a credible witness. That said, in this context, he could easily be lying to MSU. Why would he offer them a discount if he already had a higher offer from Tennessee? The more people you tell about this crap, the more likely you are to get caught when someone gets pissed off. None of it makes any sense, unless the Tennessee thing was just some dirty salesmanship by Cecil.
VegasVol wrong as usual.
