From Mr. SEC.com - Tennessee implicated on some tapes...

Also, from posts on this site, from several of the most reliable recruiting information posters, we had offered him.

who are they? I just did a search on one that I would trust and he said there's "no way Newton would ever get an offer"

Sorta like when I said an investigation into Cam's recruitment would lead to our name coming up, right? Or sorta like when I said Reaves directed the hostesses, right? Or sorta like when I said Kiffin would get cited by the NCAA for a major violation during his Tennessee tenure, right?
Or like when you said UT would get half of USC's punishments.

I'm glad you consider yourself credible. :eek:lol:

Keep digging Vegas

I suppose we had a 153 page thread on Newton in the recruiting section because we had no interest, right?

Just a few of the snapshots from some of the more reliable posters...

"I've heard we offered him.. don't have a second confirmation on that though..."

"Hey Sab are we after Newton?"
"We are pursuing him and are in good shape."

From Tennessee news sources:

“Tennessee is probably recruiting me the hardest right now,” Newton explained. “I watched their game with Florida this weekend. If they had got any big plays on offense they would have won that game.”

Apparently the feelings are mutual between Tennessee and Newton.

“I have a lot of interest in Tennessee,” Newton said. “They will definitely get one of my official visits.”

According to Blinn Head Coach Brad Franchione, Tennessee has been recruiting Newton for a while.

“They came in late spring and their interest seems to be building,” Franchione said. “Tennessee definitely has a lot of interest in Cameron.”

Where does Tennessee stand currently for Newton?

“They are definitely one of my top schools,” Newton said. “Looking at Tennessee’s depth chart and see how much young talent they have, the future is definitely bright in Knoxville.”

also from another search on a poster who is very credible on any UT site

Newton failed big time when he visited with our previous staff. Had difficulty understanding alignments...
Right or wrong, Kif didn't believe Cam could execute his offense and he wasn't interested in changing it.

no one's arguing that he wasn't pursued but there was no offer and we didn't stop recruiting him just because we got outbid.

Everyone knew we were taking a JUCO QB in the last class. Not sure why it's such a shock we took a long look at the #1 guy. He was recruited relentlessly, as pretty much all the hundreds of targets our previous staff had for the 2010 class. Eventually we told guys like Cam, Jose Jose, Demarcus Cobb, and a couple of others thanks but no thanks.

As much as some Bama fans wish this were true, the NCAA would have NEVER released the letter of infractions this week without mentioning it.

If anyone out there had any credible info as to us formally offering Newton, wouldn't one of the main recruiting services have picked up on it? None of the sites ever listed us as having offered him. It seems the scholarship offer he received is much like the payment offer he received, nothing more than wild speculation and rumors which will never be able to be proven by concrete evidence.

This mostly started being discussed only in late October, after we suddenly cooled and had a host of excuses for why we were no longer interested.

Kiffin's staff went to evaluate both Newton and Simms at one of their games, and Simms got the offer. End of story.

Interest? Sure.

Offer? No.

So basically what you're saying is that Lane Kiffin is one of the worst talent evaluators in the history of QB talent evaluation -- that he actually thought Simms was more talented than Newton. Uh-huh....

Or perhaps seeing Newton go nuts and have a midgame verbal altercation with his coach prompted some on the staff to tell Kiffin Newton wasn't worth the headache for the half season they needed him to hold the spot for Tyler Bray. Throw in that Kiffin would have to redesign the entire offense in order for Cam to be successful and I can see why they'd look elsewhere. Whoever was brought in to supplement Bray was always intended to be a stopgap until Bray was ready.

No, what I'm saying is simply a fact. Simms was offered and Newton wasn't.

I realize the truth is hard for you to accept.

I'd just like to go on record as saying this is probably the most conversation ever caused by an article on mrsec.com.

And also for the record, Basillio has abour 10 times more credibility in my book as Pennngton does.

We disagree as to why. Possibilities include:

1) We lost out in the Newton pay-for-play "sweepstakes" (after all, many of the posters on this site, claim it's "obvious" Auburn is "guilty" and "must have" paid Newton to get him to commit there);
2) We got cold feet when the NCAA came sniffing around in the early fall of 2009;
3) We decided Matt Simms was so much better than Newton that Simms deserved an offer and Newton didn't.

I consider #2 the most plausible of the 3.

Right. There are only three options here. Brilliant thinking.

I doubt anyone recruiting Newton out of JUCO expected him to explode into a Heisman-Trophy winner while leading his team to the NC. I remember the VN debate over whether he was even worth taking a chance on, given how he left Florida.

If you can't accept the fact that Newton never was offered by UT then I don't know what else to tell you.

Or, for once, Kiffin is telling the truth and Cam didn't fit his or Cheney's offense. And, if I recall, Cam was suspended for the first half of the game when they visited him.
