Fan writes letter to KNS complaining about noise level in Neyland

SIAP: A fan wrote this letter to the Knoxville News Sentinel after the OU game about Neyland being too loud. He might not exactly be well received...

Turn down the noise at Neyland Stadium. It is ridiculous how loud it is before and during the game. We arrive about an hour before kickoff and the noise (I cannot call it music) is so loud we have to shout in each other’s ear to hear, and we are not old and/or deaf. (But we may be after putting up with decibel-crushing racket for four hours.)

And that “Third down for what” with the bass line turned up as loud as it could be has no business in a ballgame. We have been to every stadium in the Southeastern Conference, and none have such a raucous noise blaster as that.

With at least 90,000 fans in the stadium wearing orange and a 300-member band, the noise level created by them will be perfectly fine to rattle the opposition without breaking the eardrums of those in attendance.

And don’t tell us that’s what the young people want. Since when do the inmates run the asylum?

That is about what it sounded like during the game with the University of Oklahoma: Craziness.

(Maybe it would have sounded better had we won.)

I'm sorry I can't post the link but someone wrote a letter to KNS that was posted on BR complaining about the noise at the Oklahoma game. Guy was actually from Tennessee but complained that him and his wife/friend had to yell at each other to have a conversation. I guess he doesn't own a TV and couldn't just sit at home with the volume off

Wow, just wow. My favourite is comparing catering the music to recruits and players as "letting the inmates run the asylum". I would argue that it's closer to letting the talent pick the music that they want to hear. Also I will go on note that I have heard several other schools ripping off third down for what this year, including SEC schools. Also pretty low blow to claim that the music had any impact on the outcome of the game.

Either keep your ass at home or buy some Bose noise cancelling headphones.. the sound is what it is.. we don't like some of the music but the team likes it and that's what it's all about.. Ridiculous writing the KNS about that..

Neyland can NEVER be too loud. If someone wants to have a conversation during the game, go out on the concourse, or stay home.

However, being loud should be done smartly. Being dumb about it is like giving the visiting team home field advantage. Singing Rocky Top while our quarterback is calling signals really needs to stop. If the opponent is calling signals, knock yourselves out with it. Someone really needs to point this out to the band director, because it is clear he doesn't get it yet. Just my opinion.
