Explosion in Boston?

Admittedly I don't have a great understanding of the Chechen-Russian conflict. Is it a nationalistic conflict or a religious one? Combination of both like northern Ireland?

I'm no expert either on it, but from what I understand, it initially began as en ethnic/national conflict back in the 1800s. The Russian Empire took control of much of the Caucasus, including Chechnya. So religion was not really a part of it initially, although the two sides are primarily Christian/atheist (Russian) and Muslim (Chechen), respectively. However, after the radicalization of many parts of the Middle East and their political movements in the 1960s-70s, many Chechen militants became Islamisized as well, integrating the Islamist approach into their own. Really, it was just a natural transition waiting to happen. So, now the conflict is not only nationalistic but largely religious as well. There are still many Chechen militants, however, who aren't necessarily Islamists.

Very informative. Thank you!

Would a motivation for a US attack be based on policy toward that conflict. Haven't we been relatively uninvolved there? I know we did have some involvement in the Georgia-Russia conflict in a political realm.

Truth is, it could be just a couple of kids who resent the US for our decadence, etc. it certainly doesn't seem well enough coordinated to scream larger terrorist group.

No new updates from the standoff on any major media site. I've predicted this thingto be done before lunch.

Anyone have any other details?

Are we not speaking in the context of terrorism directed at or located in the United States? Isn't that what happened here?

If so, what are the numbers on that?

I don't think it's completely unfounded that when you hear of a terrorist attack in or directed at the US, one thinks of radical islam. Their impact has certainly been the greatest in recent history.

Quality over quantity?

If the question is "Who are terrorists?", then why does quality of attack matter? Seems like it would only matter for the question, "Who are 'good' terrorists?"

Yet, that would rule these guys out, right? Killed 4 total thus far.

And I just looked it up, and I was wrong about Beslan. That was indeed Islamists. Regarding motivation, I don't really know. I think we've largely taken a see no evil, hear no evil approach to Russia's dealings in the Caucasus. If it were about Chechnya, I would say the attack would have been a Russian embassy here, but that's just me spitballing.

Yeah, looking for a Honda CRV in Connecticut that the suspect might have fled in. House in Watertown still surrounded. So, who knows what is going on.

Their actions last night don't even remotely scream thoughtful motive, in my opinion.

It could be a couple of kids that wanted to cause havoc. I don't understand why everyone wants to jump to conclusions on their motive, I.e. religion, Chechen wars, decadence, etc.
