Admittedly I don't have a great understanding of the Chechen-Russian conflict. Is it a nationalistic conflict or a religious one? Combination of both like northern Ireland?
At least one dorm at UMass-Dartmouth is being evacuated. No more information yet.

I'm no expert either on it, but from what I understand, it initially began as en ethnic/national conflict back in the 1800s. The Russian Empire took control of much of the Caucasus, including Chechnya. So religion was not really a part of it initially, although the two sides are primarily Christian/atheist (Russian) and Muslim (Chechen), respectively. However, after the radicalization of many parts of the Middle East and their political movements in the 1960s-70s, many Chechen militants became Islamisized as well, integrating the Islamist approach into their own. Really, it was just a natural transition waiting to happen. So, now the conflict is not only nationalistic but largely religious as well. There are still many Chechen militants, however, who aren't necessarily Islamists. I can't recall for sure, but I'm thinking Beslan was not Islamist. Could be wrong though.

Very informative. Thank you!
Would a motivation for a US attack be based on policy toward that conflict. Haven't we been relatively uninvolved there? I know we did have some involvement in the Georgia-Russia conflict in a political realm.
Truth is, it could be just a couple of kids who resent the US for our decadence, etc. it certainly doesn't seem well enough coordinated to scream larger terrorist group.
