Dump Bama

So you fear Bama? Why not get better and beat the hell out of them?
How’s that been working out for us the last 20 years. We have kids in high school that’s never seen a conference championship much less a National title. Keep making the same mistakes and you will keep getting the same results. We have got to be smarter and we have Got to put it Tennessee first, not egos, pride and tradition of past glory. These kids have a right to their own pride and tradition and they sure aren’t getting it.

I thought any team that made it to the championships had to play 15 games. 12 reg season, conference champion ship and 2 playoff games. This would be the same amount, just for more teams.

Hell I don't know. You are likely right. Things are coming so fast I and I don't see much other than VolNation, so I, as usual am just "blowing smoke"! (old saying, has nothing to do with drugs:))

I can't think of a single time in the last 15 years that losing to Bama cost us the division.
Not in the last 15 years, but it has happened. In 1992. The first year divisions existed in the SEC.

That year we lost to Arkansas, Bama, and South Carolina. But (importantly), we beat both Georgia and Florida. Those two teams ended the season 6-2 in conference, we ended up 5-3. If we hadn't lost to Bama (or either of the other two, for that matter) we would have ended 6-2 as well. Three-way tie would have gone to us, since we beat both the others in the regular season.

So yep, it has happened. Once. In almost 30 years. Still no reason to cancel the TSIO. Could argue just as strongly that this one case proves we shouldn't play South Carolina any more. Haha :)

Go Vols!

p.s. There is also an interesting case of a loss to Auburn causing us to miss the SEC championship game. In 2003, we lost to Auburn and Georgia in the regular season. Both we and UGa ended the year 6-2 in conference. UGa got to Atlanta on the tie-breaker. If we'd beaten Auburn back in early October, that would've been our trip to make. But of course, we don't have an annual game (at present) vs War Eagle, so no one wrings their hands about how we should give up he rivalry. Hehe.

The guys that still think we should play Bama each year should have to line up against them for a few plays
The guys that think we shouldn't play the TSIO every year should have to report to the nearest hospital for a testicle-removal operation.

You don't need them, because you're clearly not using them. :)

So I'll go get pummeled for a few plays, and then spend a lifetime celebrating the experience and telling stories about it over a beer. You'll go get snipped, then spend the rest of your life singing in the all-sopranos chorus.

I like my deal much better. Go Vols!

I’m sorry all I read was “I remember the 90s and now I’m going to talk about violently assaulting your testicles.”

In 1992 for some reason I imagined it was gonna be us vs Bama every year in the SECCG. Worried it would take away from the appeal and mystic of the third Saturday in October.
I couldn’t have been more wrong, never faced them once in the 29 years.

I had the opposite thought, I thought how great it would be to beat them twice in a season.

Ooops.

I guess technically yeah but since Alabama was loaded that year and won the NC, I way more considered the Arkansas and/or SC games as what cost us. I can justify losing to Alabama that year, but losing to both of those teams was unacceptable. Arkansas went 3-7-1 and SC went 5-6, though SC was a different team after Taneyhill took over.

We lost to two bad teams in South Carolina and Vanderbilt that year. The Alabama game wasn't the problem. (A strong argument could be made for not counting cross-divisional opponents in the division standings, but then we wouldn't have won the SEC in '97 or the East in '07, and we still wouldn't have won the East in '16).
I could be wrong but I could have sworn we were tied for 1st place in the East when we lost to Bama. Those other losses were after the fact. Im pretty sure we beat fla & uga then lost to A&M which tied us then lost to Bama which ended all hope for the East. After that game the bottom fell out

Mind... your... business.

I have no doubt the day will come when Bama's run is over. It has happened to every program that has achieved national dominance. So no. Not "running away". Just a practical understanding that UT playing Bama every year ON AVERAGE creates a distinct disadvantage when trying to overcome what's happened but also generally. Auburn nor LSU have been as historically strong as Bama. On the whole, that creates an advantage for UGA and UF even if UT is "good". It is even worse when you go down further. UK's permanent crossover is MSU, right? Creating equity is better than continuing this one game.

agree. Too many fans do not appreciate the competitive disadvantage tn faces by being the only eastern division team that plays bama every year. And its not just wins and losses. Everyone complains about the vols not hiring a “proven coach”. Not too many “proven coaches” want to sign up to an inherent competitive disadvantage.

Incorrect. UF finished with 2 losses including UT. If UT had run the table after losing to A&M and Bama, they go to Atlanta. If UT had lost to only one of USCe or Vandy, then it could be argued that the Bama game cost them the East. But as it was the Vols could have knocked off Bama and they still would have been a game behind UF at the end of the year.

We won't be the only team in the East playing Bama every year shortly when Bama and Barn move to the East.

I swear, some folks here want to talk about how tough being a TN Vol coach is but they're usually the first to insist after one season.... "He's not the guy. We can tell after one season. He's not it...."

It's going to take time to rebuild and a coach is going to need support, more than a season or two of support, to change a program that's sucked for 15 years.

Bro that record reflects after the fact. The Bama game ended the race for us. It was a 3 way tie going into that game. If we beat bama i cant see us losing to SC and Vandy. Bama essentially ended the race.

UT was only down by half a game coming out of the Bama game, and they had their easiest teams left to play. There aren't any logical gymnastics that will make Bama the reason UT lost the East in 2016.

All of that is a bunch of bull.

For Tennessee, playing them isn’t about fairness or balance or any of that other hooey that I’m not going to debate.

Playing Alabama is about the fact that you hate them, they hate you, and your season ain’t the same without playing one another.
Oh yeah it’s awesome playing them every year that’s the thing it is the same each season it’s a automatic beat down we are guaranteed.
