Dump Bama

We just need to get better not quit.

After 20 years maybe it is time to accept the reality that it won't happen. I get what you are saying if this were a 5-10 year streak or whatever, but the landscape has changed and its about to be 20 in a row with no end in sight. I don't believe cycling will happen like it has in the past, or at the very least, won't happen as often. There is a stranglehold by teams at the top, Bama runs the SEC, and the conference will not do or allow anything that hurts it's cash cow.

It's stupid to keep this game just for tradition sake, and saying "we just need to get better" is dumb. We annually go into this game against a stacked deck and one arm tied behind our back. If not that, then move them over where UF and UGA have to play them every year as well.

Everything cycles in CFB. As offensive as it is to traditionalists, there comes a time when traditions have to give way to progress. We have reached that point.

It is irrational denial to think that having Bama on the schedule over the last 20 years as not only an automatic loss but also an embarrassment has not hurt recruiting. It has to one degree or another. It makes UT's hill that much steeper to climb. It isn't the only factor but it is a factor.

That said, there will come a time when Bama has to replace Saban and things begin to change. The reason to drop the game isn't because of where the ebb and flow is now but rather how rotation should work to produce more equity when it comes to winning championships all around. Equity for UT. Equity for Auburn. Equity for TAM.

When Bama fades, what kind of advantage will TAM have? Assuming UT gets better at some point, Auburn gets UGA. LSU gets UF. Bama gets UT. And TAM gets South Carolina? That's at least part of the reason to think that TAM should at least challenge Bama a little now along with being in a state loaded with talent.

There was a time when the conference was smaller and playing Bama every year was practical. That is no longer true.

Adding TX and Ok should move AL and AU into the east, that would be the smartest most logical thing to do. If not I'm still 100% against dumping the AL game, it's a measuring stick, just so happens we haven't measured up for over a decade. It'll come around and we'll be back, when we do top that mountain it will be glorious.

No, it will just take competent coaching and commitment from the administration.

Yeah, that sounds like a miracle but it could happen.
Gotta start winning games. Kids today have seen us be nothing but door mats. That’s why I think a move to another conference where maybe we can win 7-8 games a year guaranteed would benefit us more than going 4-8 or 5-7 with our SEC schedule. You can chalk up 3 guaranteed losses for us right now with UGA Florida and Bama.

Made your post a little more accurate.

It will be glorious, but I don't believe it will be anytime soon, if at all. I would bet more money on Bama winning 30 in a row than not. Back in the day I agreed with your thinking. Right now, however, the landscape with the playoffs and money driving everything isn't really conducive to the cycling we are used to. It used to be in the poll and bowl system you never really knew what was going to happen from year to year. Now, I can tell you with almost 100% certainty what half the playoff field will before the season even kicks off. What we are seeing now simply isn't the same college football your daddy enjoyed.

You think winning 7-8 games in a different conference will help recruiting? That's either trolling or delusion.

Do you think winning 9-10 games in a different conference will help recruiting?

I don't believe it will hurt any worse than where we are currently recruiting. All things being equal, but we win 9-10 games annually and maybe make a new years bowl or even automatic playoff spot for winning the conference? I would take that all day.

Nope, not chalking up any guaranteed losses, if you play the game you have a chance.

We aren't moving conferences, that's crazy talk. It would destroy UT and relegate us to permanent mediocrity, at least now we have a chance to return to greatness.

Saban won't be coaching 30 more years, hell he'll retire in the next 5-6 and when he does the Gumps will slide back down to earth. Besides the 1 game a year we play them isn't the problem, it's consistently losing to UK, Vandy, USCjr, GA state, UGA and UF is what's killing us.

We don’t know what will happen with JH but everyone around us almost has gotten better while we have gotten worse progressively. Even UK has surpassed us, not historically of course but right now they are better than us. I don’t see this chance to return to greatness you’re talking about, our program is in the worst shape currently it ever has been.

Then there is only one way to go and that is up.

I'm not sold on CJH, I think he's a 5 year guy that will stabilize the program and get us to 7-8 wins a year but will make the program more attractive to the next guy.

The teams that are hovering around 9-10 games in the other conferences aren't recruiting at the level that UT's at right now.

If you don’t think Bama will still be miles ahead of us immediately after Saban then I have a bridge to sell you. I would bet Bama wins 30 in a row against us with this current streak.

Bro that record reflects after the fact. The Bama game ended the race for us. It was a 3 way tie going into that game. If we beat bama i cant see us losing to SC and Vandy. Bama essentially ended the race.

If we had beaten South Carolina and Vanderbilt, we would have won the East. Even after we lost to South Carolina, we could still have earned a spot in the Sugar Bowl by beating Vandy. As it turned out, we did neither.

Furthermore, Florida played a ranked LSU that year, and Georgia played a ranked Auburn. Neither of those teams were as good as Bama, but they were both considerably better than South Carolina and Vanderbilt, so they would hardly have been guaranteed wins for us.

Playing our biggest rival wasn't why we lost the East in '16 (perhaps, if there was a single cause, it was the drama surrounding Jalen Hurd that cost us the division championship that year). There's a reason Butch Jones's seat was so hot after a 9-win season.
