Drastic action needed on Ebola

I'm not scared of Ebola. I'm not scared of influenza, either, but I know it's much more likely to kill me.

Risk assessment isn't that difficult.

I would say you are wrong.

Ebola will kill you 60-90% of the time depending on which stats you believe regardless of treatment. In the US people rarely die from solely from the flu, they die from other complications associated with the flu or not seeking treatment.

In mid-August, Korean Air and Kenya Airways announced they were halting flights to the West African countries ravaged by Ebola, and British Airways and Air France also decided to suspend service to the Ebola hot zone a few weeks later. Yet the Obama administration made no such request to U.S. airlines, despite the Center of Disease Control advising Americans to avoid “non-essential travel” to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea several weeks ago. Why? Then again does anyone REALLY expect the federal government to make ANY competent decisions anymore?

Wow, now Ebola is Obama's fault. And I really thought I had seen it all.

I would suggest that risk assessment becomes far more difficult when (i) the world is currently dealing with the worst ever outbreak of ebola, with no apparent end in sight, (ii) the first American vector has now appeared, (iii) our vigilant government refuses to take steps to reduce additional potential vectors, and (iv) your assessment of flu risk is based on highly suspect CDC data.

Furthermore, it would appear that there is no scenario in which you would fear dying from the flu, either before getting it or after. On the other hand, you have admitted that you would be scared if you contracted ebola. One presents no scenario in which you would be scared; the other would scare you if you had it. Draw your own conclusions.

So, what has he done besides play 18 holes? Wasn't it always Bush's fault btw?

He did this.

Obama blocks deportation for thousands of Liberian illegals, citing Ebola crisis - Washington Times

President Obama deferred deportation Friday for thousands of Liberians living in the U.S., allowing them to remain in America for two more years rather than return to their Ebola-stricken homeland.

Yes that means if you are sick, catch a flight to the US and you will be taken care of.

What does a person being scared of something have to do with the actual risk it presents? People have plenty of irrational fears.

Does the fact that people get scared watching shark movies change the fact that sharks only kill a few people each year?

I believe you've lost track of the conversation. My original point, and the one I've consistently argued for here, is that people are more scared of ebola than they are the flu, even those in this thread who choose to cite a statistic (and a faulty one at that) to argue that they should be more scared of the flu.

Enough of the bickering about whether Ebola or the flu is scarier, I have a serious question. Would it be in poor taste for me to dress as an Ebola patient/victim for Halloween at work?

Oh, almost forgot to mention, I work for a health system.

I want the American people to know that our experts, here at the CDC and across our government, agree that the chances of an Ebola outbreak here in the United States are extremely low. We’ve been taking the necessary precautions, including working with countries in West Africa to increase screening at airports so that someone with the virus doesn’t get on a plane for the United States. In the unlikely event that someone with Ebola does reach our shores, we’ve taken new measures so that we’re prepared here at home.

Does this guy get anything right ?

You're obviously trolling but I'd venture a guess most people wouldn't get the costume right away and a costume that needs any amount of explaining has already failed imo.

I never said it would never reach the US. In fact I'm surprised it took this long to reach us.

I didn't say you did. I'm just saying there were many who brushed this thing off saying it was overblown and wouldn't make it here.

Strawman, I know

More of a joke than a troll job, meant to lighten the mood a bit. But reading through this thread for the last few days, the thought of actually doing that has crossed my mind, haha.

In truth it'd probably be funny anywhere else but in a health related field given recent events. :)

Someone could get butthurt, turn you in and fire you.

Not in your best interest.

I then redirect the question to those in the thread who do have great confidence in our medical community to fight this.

There is really no use in engaging you in any further discussion on the matter. You offer situations that have not happened yet to springboard a fear campaign.

Your free to feel however you wish. You don't really understand the pathology and epidemiology of the disease. The medical community has fought things like smallpox and polio effectively.

I referred to specific events that have already happened in this specific case.

Get in the back of the line Bola, modern sophisticated people worry about legitimately important concerns like Global Warming.

“I can remember in Africa early on in HIV thinking ‘this is an unspeakably awful situation but it will not decimate the population’… though we still lost millions. I watch this and I think it is much nastier than HIV,” he said.

“I remember working on SARS and being scared, but this is much worse than SARS. It is just spreading faster and faster and faster,” he told the Australian newspaper.

David Nabarro, the man leading the UN's fight against Ebola, says it is worse than HIV and SARS

What? Is this stuff really that bad? I hope not..

All about perspective. If you are promiscuous, HIV. If you live in West Africa, Ebola. If you are old or young, SARS.

A normal healthy, middle-aged adult who isn't promiscuous or lives in West Africa, none of the above.

Watched an interview with a infectious disease doctor. Apparently this can only be spread by direct contact with bodily fluids (saliva, mucas, blood, etc). Quarantine of any known cases should be pretty effective. Even this doctor said in a developed country like the US the chance of a widespread pandemic is almost zero.
