I would say you are wrong.

Ebola will kill you 60-90% of the time depending on which stats you believe regardless of treatment. In the US people rarely die from solely from the flu, they die from other complications associated with the flu or not seeking treatment.

I would suggest that risk assessment becomes far more difficult when (i) the world is currently dealing with the worst ever outbreak of ebola, with no apparent end in sight, (ii) the first American vector has now appeared, (iii) our vigilant government refuses to take steps to reduce additional potential vectors, and (iv) your assessment of flu risk is based on highly suspect CDC data.

Furthermore, it would appear that there is no scenario in which you would fear dying from the flu, either before getting it or after. On the other hand, you have admitted that you would be scared if you contracted ebola. One presents no scenario in which you would be scared; the other would scare you if you had it. Draw your own conclusions.

What does a person being scared of something have to do with the actual risk it presents? People have plenty of irrational fears.

Does the fact that people get scared watching shark movies change the fact that sharks only kill a few people each year?

I believe you've lost track of the conversation. My original point, and the one I've consistently argued for here, is that people are more scared of ebola than they are the flu, even those in this thread who choose to cite a statistic (and a faulty one at that) to argue that they should be more scared of the flu.

Enough of the bickering about whether Ebola or the flu is scarier, I have a serious question. Would it be in poor taste for me to dress as an Ebola patient/victim for Halloween at work?




Oh, almost forgot to mention, I work for a health system.

I want the American people to know that our experts, here at the CDC and across our government, agree that the chances of an Ebola outbreak here in the United States are extremely low. We’ve been taking the necessary precautions, including working with countries in West Africa to increase screening at airports so that someone with the virus doesn’t get on a plane for the United States. In the unlikely event that someone with Ebola does reach our shores, we’ve taken new measures so that we’re prepared here at home.

You're obviously trolling but I'd venture a guess most people wouldn't get the costume right away and a costume that needs any amount of explaining has already failed imo.

There is really no use in engaging you in any further discussion on the matter. You offer situations that have not happened yet to springboard a fear campaign.

Your free to feel however you wish. You don't really understand the pathology and epidemiology of the disease. The medical community has fought things like smallpox and polio effectively.

All about perspective. If you are promiscuous, HIV. If you live in West Africa, Ebola. If you are old or young, SARS.

A normal healthy, middle-aged adult who isn't promiscuous or lives in West Africa, none of the above.

Watched an interview with a infectious disease doctor. Apparently this can only be spread by direct contact with bodily fluids (saliva, mucas, blood, etc). Quarantine of any known cases should be pretty effective. Even this doctor said in a developed country like the US the chance of a widespread pandemic is almost zero.
