Drastic action needed on Ebola

Not effective. When I was in Nigeria (granted it was 32 years ago) I returned from Lagos via London. Are you going to turn everyone back that has been in an impact zone within the past 7, 10, or 14 days?

Yes, we have the capability.

Another possible mis-step:

"Paramedics who transported the patient to the hospital have been isolated, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings' chief of staff said. They have not shown symptoms of the disease so far, Frieden said.

The ambulance used to carry the patient was still in use for two days after the transport, city of Dallas spokeswoman Sana Syed said."

As far as I know they've not released the flight details, i.e. any connections, the airline, etc., presumably because they do not want to panic people unnecessarily, which I suppose makes sense given what we know of the virus and this outbreak.

But, if random people start showing up with Ebola, and they were on his flight, or connected to people who were, the CDC will have surrendered all of its credibility. And the panic level will be epic.

Perry is giving a press conference along with some other . He said the guy in Dallas did have contact with school age children.

We know he went through Brussels per CNN.

Yep, not a dang soul raises the lid anymore.

You know most infectious bacteria have an extremely limited lifespan on a non-organic surface, right? There would have to be some super quick, at the ready, user to user rotation on that thing to transmit diseases.

Yes, fellas, that includes STD's.

The CDC said that you don't transmit the virus until you become symptomatic. When he was on the flight, per the CDC, he wasn't showing symptoms and was not a threat to anyone.

They also said the only way to get AIDs was gay sex.

There have been a lot of comparisons to the flu on here, and people saying they are more scared of the flu, etc. I call BS on that. Nobody is really scared of the flu. Nobody wants to get it, but if you do, your chances of dying from it are very low. Ebola, while not as infectious, is far more likely to kill you if you get it. If you get the flu, you aren't scared; if you get ebola, you will be terrified - no way around that. People's fear of ebola is obviously based on their understanding that they must do anything and everything in their power to avoid getting it.

Thousands to tens of thousands of Americans will die this year from the flu.

How many have died from ebola?

@AP

BREAKING: Sister of US Ebola patient: He told hospital he was from Liberia on 1st visit, was sent home.

So LG if people die at a result of this, would the hospital be liable for extreme negligence if the AP report is true?

No, because you always have the right to get a second opinion (unless you live in California or Massachusetts).

Assuming that is correct then there is no problem. That's why they are hiding any details. But if they turn out to be wrong ...

The hospital does not have an actionable duty to third persons with whom they have no contact. Now, if someone is sitting in their ER because they stepped on a nail and they got it from this guy while he was originally sitting there, too, then, well, I don't know. Tougher situation.

I would be interested in seeing polling data out of Dallas as to what the general public think of this.

Well first of all, I don't think those numbers are accurate. The CDC's flu numbers are an amalgamated mess of statistical analysis and computer modeling, and they're highly over-estimated.

Secondly, we've never had an ebola outbreak here, so I'm not entirely sure I see your point.

Most importantly, you're missing my point entirely. When you get the flu, are you scared you're going to die? Not likely. How would you react if you came down with ebola?

Did he mean his own kids or other people's kids?

Some school-age children have been in contact with the Ebola patient being treated in Dallas, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday. They have been identified and are being monitored.

I take that to be other people's kids.

To clarify this is what he said. It is 5 kids

Today, we learned that some school-aged children have been identified as having had contact with the patient and are now being monitored at home for any signs of the disease,” said Perry.

“Let me assure you that these children have been identified and are being monitored and the disease cannot be transmitted before having any symptoms. I have full confidence in the medical professionals and Superintendent [Mike] Miles, and our local, our state and federal partners in keeping this contained.”

Miles confirmed five children had contact with the infected patient over the weekend and attended school this week. The students attended Tasby Middle School, Conrad High School, Hotchkiss Elementary School, Lowe Elementary School, and Rogers Elementary School. The students are not under quarantine, but are being told to stay at home.

If any of those kids come down with ebola, then I think it's safe to say that the intensity of this situation will increase dramatically.

In mid-August, Korean Air and Kenya Airways announced they were halting flights to the West African countries ravaged by Ebola, and British Airways and Air France also decided to suspend service to the Ebola hot zone a few weeks later. Yet the Obama administration made no such request to U.S. airlines, despite the Center of Disease Control advising Americans to avoid “non-essential travel” to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea several weeks ago. Why? Then again does anyone REALLY expect the federal government to make ANY competent decisions anymore?

Then I conclude that you are more scared of ebola than you are the flu.

I'm not scared of Ebola. I'm not scared of influenza, either, but I know it's much more likely to kill me.

Risk assessment isn't that difficult.
