yeah they are allies. picking up more trade with china doesn't change that. its a result of our stupidity. we remove that stupidity and we can likely "fix" any trade deal with Canada.

as with most things Trump, its not the ideal that is bad, its the execution. Canada becoming a 51st state was never going to happen, but stronger ties between the two were close, especially before Trump got involved with their election and swung the pendulum away from us. Same thing with Denmark, the US probably could have pulled off some expanded military access and mining rights, but instead of working deals Trump just barges in and makes demands. that doesn't sit well with most people.

I think USA and Canada starting drifting a part even before Trump. Trudeau was just as problematic as Trump in the situation.

Honestly, it really depends on who the leaders of this nation are. If Canada had elected a MAGA-like leader this past weekend, we would be best buds again.

Our crappy politicians are fighting each other and that is splitting us. Kind of like how California and most of the Southeast really don't see eye to eye and get along (I still think UCLA can't come to SEC country for a game lol).

I think you're overplaying your hand here. Do they benefit from being the US's next door neighbor? Of course they do, and it is smart for them to have oriented their economy around that fact. Do the freeload to a degree on the security umbrella? Probably, but again for a long time we wanted it that way. Especially Europe.

I also don't think they'd be a third-world hellhole if the US wasn't on their border though. Their economy would be oriented completely differently, but it isn't like they have absolutely nothing going for them otherwise.

I don't care as much about the defense argument. To be frank, half of NATO members role/value is to just give access to the NATO nations that can truly provide resources.

Trump didn't do anything. Canadians bought into stupid media fights between idiotic politicians instead of voting for a real leader. Another nation's leader should never impact the choice to pick your own leader. I also don't think the Canadian "Conservative" was a very good candidate. He was wish washy and kind of their version of a Mitt Romney. Young Canadians cannot even afford housing so it is really their problem. Ultimately it is their mess. They haven’t officially voted to leave yet. No referendum has been held, their prime minister (or whatever) has just stated that there will eventually be one. If Greenland has a referendum and votes to leave then Denmark will have to leave them to their own affairs, but until then, Greenland is under their control, just like Puerto Rico is under ours.

I appreciate the Victoria II reference. It admittedly made me laugh. But as somebody who’s pretty well researched on WWII, Denmark stood zero chance of fighting the Germans for long and surrender was their only option. Their army was pretty puny and not very well-armed. So I don’t know what you think they should’ve done instead.
