Defending Fulmer

Losing seasons in 2 of his last 4 years and the 2007 year we lost to our two biggest rivals by a combined 63 points in games that weren't even competitive.

Fulmers last two seasons against Bama and UF we were outscored:

70-26 by Bama

89-26 by UF, in which the 2009 score could have been much worse had UF not called off the dogs. Either that or they were laughing too much at our inept coaching.

But yes, Fulmer had us on the right track to get back to glory. Headlined by these beaststuds he had committed to help right the ship....

Jerod Askew - quit team
Jarvis Giles - went to USC, quit
Taj Boyd - at Clemson, fair QB
David Oku - transferred after doing nothing
Kevin Revis - transferred after not playing
Toney Williams - transferred/quit but was injured. Didn't do much before that

Was it 2004-05 USC? No. The idea that they had no talent is overblown IMO tho.

True. I really don't think he did a bad coaching job. I just don't think he took over some terrible roster and Carroll was also playing a true freshman at QB. Defense was certainly not up to past USC standards.

Assuming that you aren't actually some kind of troll getting jollies from posting the most farfetched nonsense imaginable in order to get reactions, I do think you should probably ask yourself why you continually defend a coach who had 2 losing seasons in 4 years, who was continually losing to his main rivals, who was a decade removed from winning anything of note.

I simply cannot understand why anyone would go to the absurd lengths that you do trying to explain why the coach who was fired after doing the above things should not have been two coaches subsequent to his termination.

I am pro-DD and my posts reflect it. This kid's got it and is the right guy for the job.

The point of my question (Who fires a coach...?) was not that it wasn't time for Phil to go, but to illustrate the height of this program's expectations. [Apparently, Phil made some so angry that any mention of him sends them off the deep end.]

Ironically, in the end, it is probable that Fulmer was fired not for 2005-2008, but for failing to win more championships when the Vols were winning 119 games in the 12 years from 1993 to 2004. Nasty business this.

I had the pleasure of meeting Fulmer after he won the national championship and he had his ring on. I told him that there was only won thing better than that ring. A little surprised he said what? I held up two fingers and we both laughed. It was easy to see why he was one of the best recruiters in the nation. I like Fulmer and believe he is a man of quality in every respect.
Phillip was at his best when the coaching in the SEC was not at its best. When coaching at Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and Auburn improved Phillip found himself out coached and his philosophy out dated. Fulmer discipline was always lacking and sometimes talent covered that up but not always. And finally, I observed that the talent that he brought in was not developed to the fullest extent partly because Phillip himself could not recognized good coaching talent.
I thank Fulmer for the contribution he has made to UT and the integrity he brought to the program. I will repeat what John Ward said when he retired…..”its time”……and indeed it was.

Saban is a bum. But it's as easy to see he's the best coach in the SEC right now as it's easy to see that Kiffin is a scum bag that continued the detonation of UT football.

I'm pretty sure the IE timeline has Phil coming off his third SEC championship right about now. Saban got canned a year ago and Urban Meyer has already been laughed out of the conference for his joke offense.

Let me just say that I hope CDD is a "Failmer" too. I'd like to think that we are going to win 150 out of the next 200 games, get to see a "Peyton Manning type" QB, win (2) SEC titles, win a National Championship, kick Bama's ass 8 years in a row.

Man, I hope he sucks like CPF did.

Your timeline is as delusional as your love for Kiffin. I supported Coach Fulmer until the first game of 2008. I had every hope that he would turn it around and get the Vols back on track. Obviously hind sight is 20/20 now. You are just ignoring it when it comes to calling Kiffin what he is - a liar and a dullard.
