Defending Fulmer

Losing seasons in 2 of his last 4 years and the 2007 year we lost to our two biggest rivals by a combined 63 points in games that weren't even competitive.

Fulmers last two seasons against Bama and UF we were outscored:

70-26 by Bama

89-26 by UF, in which the 2009 score could have been much worse had UF not called off the dogs. Either that or they were laughing too much at our inept coaching.

But yes, Fulmer had us on the right track to get back to glory. Headlined by these beaststuds he had committed to help right the ship....

Jerod Askew - quit team
Jarvis Giles - went to USC, quit
Taj Boyd - at Clemson, fair QB
David Oku - transferred after doing nothing
Kevin Revis - transferred after not playing
Toney Williams - transferred/quit but was injured. Didn't do much before that

That's no way to talk about the QB that Fulmer had pegged to lead us back to the glory days!

Leading that great Clawfense...where we continually gash a team on the ground, have their defense bent over exhausted and then decide to thow the ball with a new QB in a new system...BRILLIANT

Like the great coach Nick Saban said to Mal Moore after signing his contract, "players win games, so get me some damn players".

Wait, I thought Saban was a bum and Fulmer would run him out of Bama on his way to multiple SEC Championships. Did you change your mind?

explain please how 3 recruiting classes ranked #2, #8, and #4 (actually we should probably include 05 and possibly 06, which were #1 and #1) leaves kiffy a "train wreck" at SC?

if he can't win the PAC10C with that kind of talent he sure as hell could not have won the SECC.

Was it 2004-05 USC? No. The idea that they had no talent is overblown IMO tho.

Here's Kiper's early 2012 Big Board. Two Trogans in the top 5.

I thought he'd do better than he did, but I guess it's not surprising he didn't improve on what Pete Carroll did.

True. I really don't think he did a bad coaching job. I just don't think he took over some terrible roster and Carroll was also playing a true freshman at QB. Defense was certainly not up to past USC standards.

I will have to give you some credit. Every time I think your ignorant blather has reached the pinnacle of silliness, you set a new standard. Kudos for surpassing expectations.

Assuming that you aren't actually some kind of troll getting jollies from posting the most farfetched nonsense imaginable in order to get reactions, I do think you should probably ask yourself why you continually defend a coach who had 2 losing seasons in 4 years, who was continually losing to his main rivals, who was a decade removed from winning anything of note.

I simply cannot understand why anyone would go to the absurd lengths that you do trying to explain why the coach who was fired after doing the above things should not have been two coaches subsequent to his termination.

:eek:lol:
+1

Yesterday I posted some history about the Vols' football program and posited that we should be embarrassed about where we are.

Some were grateful for the education. Some expressed disdain about my question: Who fires a coach whose record vs. Alabama is 10-5-1?

One fan observed that the post-2004 trajectory of Fulmer's success (failure) warranted the firing. Fair enough. Two losing (no-bowl) seasons in 4 is unacceptable at Tennessee (even with a SEC-E title in '07). Others said UT should have let the coach go after 2005's 5-6 season.

[Should Alabama have fired the Bear after going 6-5 and 6-5-1 in '69 and '70?]

I am pro-DD and my posts reflect it. This kid's got it and is the right guy for the job.

The point of my question (Who fires a coach...?) was not that it wasn't time for Phil to go, but to illustrate the height of this program's expectations. [Apparently, Phil made some so angry that any mention of him sends them off the deep end.]

Ironically, in the end, it is probable that Fulmer was fired not for 2005-2008, but for failing to win more championships when the Vols were winning 119 games in the 12 years from 1993 to 2004. Nasty business this.

Let the spewing commence.

I had the pleasure of meeting Fulmer after he won the national championship and he had his ring on. I told him that there was only won thing better than that ring. A little surprised he said what? I held up two fingers and we both laughed. It was easy to see why he was one of the best recruiters in the nation. I like Fulmer and believe he is a man of quality in every respect.
Phillip was at his best when the coaching in the SEC was not at its best. When coaching at Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and Auburn improved Phillip found himself out coached and his philosophy out dated. Fulmer discipline was always lacking and sometimes talent covered that up but not always. And finally, I observed that the talent that he brought in was not developed to the fullest extent partly because Phillip himself could not recognized good coaching talent.
I thank Fulmer for the contribution he has made to UT and the integrity he brought to the program. I will repeat what John Ward said when he retired…..”its time”……and indeed it was.

Pathetic effort. Your sarcasm is uncalled for and unneeded.

Saban is a bum. But it's as easy to see he's the best coach in the SEC right now as it's easy to see that Kiffin is a scum bag that continued the detonation of UT football.

It was pretty easy for the rest of us several years ago to see that Fulmer was finished and Saban would dominate.

Dude. The man crush on Kiffin is weird.

Pretty rich coming from a guy that's spent the last five years in full on Fulmer slurp mode. I outlined Kiffin's faults already. You were latched onto Phil long after even the dumbest of VN had figured out he was done.

So, which is he? A bum or the best coach in the SEC?

I'm pretty sure the IE timeline has Phil coming off his third SEC championship right about now. Saban got canned a year ago and Urban Meyer has already been laughed out of the conference for his joke offense.

I had hoped that utgibbs and VegasVol had not managed to reproduce. Sadly, I was wrong.

Let me just say that I hope CDD is a "Failmer" too. I'd like to think that we are going to win 150 out of the next 200 games, get to see a "Peyton Manning type" QB, win (2) SEC titles, win a National Championship, kick Bama's ass 8 years in a row.

Man, I hope he sucks like CPF did.

Sounds great. Let's just hope he doesn't take a ten year nap at any point.

Your timeline is as delusional as your love for Kiffin. I supported Coach Fulmer until the first game of 2008. I had every hope that he would turn it around and get the Vols back on track. Obviously hind sight is 20/20 now. You are just ignoring it when it comes to calling Kiffin what he is - a liar and a dullard.

Sweet stuff. So you spent 15 years supporting a guy that got outcoached by this "dullard". Pretty quick on the uptake.
