Defending Fulmer

I liked beating a top-5 team, and a rival to boot, by 21 in 2007; I liked beating 15th ranked South Carolina in 2007; I liked beating a good, top-20 Wisconsin team on NYD of 2008. Guess you missed those games.

So Georgia, ranked 12th at the time and lacking in the quality win department, is a top five team, while South Carolina, who finished 6-6 and very unranked is #15.

I think I remember Alabama being on probation during part of that stretch where Fulmer looked so good

They also happened to suck after Stallings' title. The team that tied us vis the most predictable drive in history was horrendous.

One thing the Fulmer supporters don't look hard enough at is that we weren't just losing those big games, we weren't even being competitive.

Look again.

Fulmer's Last 5 Years vs. Florida, Alabama, LSU & Georgia
Chance of Winning: 35%
Chance of Losing by 14 or More: 25%

Since Fulmer vs. Florida, Alabama, LSU & Georgia
Chance of Winning: 15%
Chance of Losing by 14 or More: 36%

We're winning a lot less and getting blown out more often.

You know your program is balling when the best year of your last five is highlighted by a win over South Carolina.

South Carolina was in the top-15 at the time. But if you want to use end-of-year rankings, Georgia finished 2nd in the nation.

why last 5 years? Is it because you have to go back that far to make the numbers work?

07-08 vs UF and UA combined score: 159-52

And have been universally regarded as unaccomplished and overrated. The highlight of their season was beating a mediocre Florida team.

So our struggles immediately after Fulmer left, when we had to deal with severe attrition and the fruits of Fulmer's poor recruiting late in his UT tenure, provide evidence that we should've kept Fulmer?

"Wait, are they lining up in the exact same formation again? maybe I should do X Y Z to counter that"
"No that is exactly what they will be expecting....there is no way they will do exactly what they have done all the way down the field again"
"But its the same formation....look its the same motion maybe you should call a time out"
"No...they will be expecting that...I'm being a sneaky evil genius over here :Face directly to doughnut:"

Don't be silly. We have been mediocre since Fulmer veered into the ditch, but it was Hamilton's/Kiffin's/anyone else's fault. Fulmer was driving to titles when he was fired for no apparent reason.

How do you not get that year 1 of a rebuilding project is totally the same thing as another coach's 15th season?

We finished 6-6, and you had to fight for your life to win that game. That same year, UT needed several OT's to beat UK, and a missed FG to beat Vandy.

Fulmer should have done himself a favor, and retired after the Outback Bowl. He would have saved faced, and allowed those of you with your lips placed squarely on the left arse cheek of CPF to speak of the Glory Days of the 90s with dignity.

Did you like getting your ass handed to you in the Fiesta Bowl by Penn State?

Going 7-7 in Bowls losing to the likes of Maryland, Clemson, Kansas State, Nebraska twice, Penn State twice

After the NC in 1998, Fulmer was 3-5 in bowl games

Not very dominate would you say?

We beat South Carolina because Arian Foster fumbled, plain and simple. A mistake gave us the win.

Vegas Vol, two questions:

1. How many times in the last ten years have gone into Neyland facing a top ten team and won?

2. How did the win(s) look at the end of the year?

I think that's the best UK team I've ever seen. Now if you want to say the best UK team I've ever seen is lackluster, go right ahead. But they did beat the national champs that year.

Agree re: Carolina and re: Vandy.

Forgot that they beat LSU. Will think before going on another rant.

They beat LSU, but followed that up with losses to Florida, UGA, and Mississippi State and a narrow win against Vandy. They certainly weren't untouchable. Had we decided to field an offense for the final 30 minutes of regulation, we wouldn't have had to struggle so badly. That was Cutcliffe's MO, however.

To this day, that is the most painful loss, to me, as a Cocks fan. Granted, I wasn't alive for the Navy debacle.

The 2006 win wasn't a heck of a lot better. We won because 2 (maybe even 3?) Gamecocks in position to make endzone interceptions tipped the ball into the air for Volunteer TDs.

I disagree. After we got that 14-0 lead, we sat back and let Carolina do whatever we wanted until we went down 17-14, at which point we came back and outscored them 17-7 in the 4th quarter.

If we don't get that early lead, we don't let up in the 2nd and 3rd.
