Davenport Fired

Not fired completely. removed from position. Reassigned as instructor in Communications dept.

Was fired from AD position due, in large part, to her very poor communications skills, which we all saw last year when speaking in public 2-3 times.

Then, is re-assigned as a professor of communications at the university.....

Only at UT.

It seems inappropriate that someone alleged to have poor communication skills would be demoted to Professor of Communication Studies. Pity the poor students who take her communications classes.

I read this in the Termination letter and then re-read it again.

Aight..so whoever formulated the termination and demotion plan is now going to be demoted to Professor of Human Resources Management?

No Urban did...well known. Good coach tho...like I said. Miserable, weak recruiter.

Leach is a one trick pony and you wanted that for us. Quit lying.

Agreed.

In 18 years of being a head coach Mike Leach has won ONE division title 10 frickin years ago and is currently a .500 coach. At WS over the last five years he's been 3-9, 6-7, 3-9, 9-4, 8-5, 9-4 for 38-38 overall and a 26-28 losing record in the PAC-10. Most recently He's had 3 'acceptable?' years.

That's a homerun hire for Tennessee!!!???????

Bwa ha ha ha ha.

He can go fly a ki.....

Walk the plank matey! Aaaaargh!

I'd honestly give her a pass on her poor public speaking skills if her one-on-one/small group communication was better. Apparently that was awful too. DiPietro straight up said she didn't listen to people and didn't pay attention to written communications.

Even so, that's just cover for whatever the exact real reasons are.

When I interview someone for a job, couple of the things I always look for is how that person answers questions and body language. Makes one wonder what impression she gave when going through the process of getting the job. I don't think she became poor at communication overnight, likely it was overlooked because someone thought they had a "yes" person, and they did...at first until it became apparent that she read the tea leaves and did the right thing. IMO, she was sunk at that point and they waited until the dust had settled with the fan base and then made their move. The lack of communication skills was likely a trait that could be used at anytime to justify the firing, if needed.

She was the Knoxville campus chancellor not AD.

A quick chronology of Beverly Davenport with regards to our AD and coaching searches.....

He told her to hire Currie, told her how to couch it to make sure neither Fulmer nor Blackburn got the job, said the new AD “must be a sitting P5 AD”, per Haslam, and she did. That obviously disqualified both.

She was fully on board with the Schiano hiring until the fan backlash, and to her credit, she quickly read the room and almost immediately changed course.

Next, as her AD hire flailed about aimlessly for a full week and some eyes and attention began turning her way....as people were embarrassed and were trying to figure out who the hell was responsible for the national debacle that was our head coaching search, and were beginning to look at and ask questions about her, she fired Currie and almost immediately installed Fulmer, the ONLY human in Tennessee who was gonna placate the fans and turn the wolves away from her door.

Yea, I remember and understand all that. Its obvious I haven't done very well describing my confusion. I guess it just comes down to me being hard headed about her being so great. I didn't like her in the beginning and I just can't convince myself that she did what she was told, "just like anyone else would have".

I am convinced of one thing though. Especially given the circumstances, No doubt in my mind our football program is in the best hands it could possibly be in with Phil as AD.

I just had a thought, and I may be giving entirely too much credit to Dr. Joe... But after the AD search and hire Dr. Joe hired CPF to a special advisory role that reported directly to him and was a link between the AD and the President. So my thought is........ Could this be Dr. J bucking against the HOH one last time before his retirement by cleaning out all the Haslams puppets and making hires that go in a different direction from what the Haslams had orchestrated? Or could this possibly be a changing of the guard move so to speak as in a different prominent booster has "taken over" and has ordered Dr. J to replace the Haslams hires.

I know it's probably just wishful thinking and I'm probably giving to much credit where it doesn't belong but it's just a thought I had.

I guess you can use the UT Administration as a substitute for no Game of Thrones this season. Without a doubt the Haslams are the Lannisters pulling the strings in the background.

so when is Jimmy getting shot with a crossbow while taking a dump?

I like your version much better than the assumed rampant version. We can only hope that is true.

I think it is an attempt by HOH to reassert influence in the administration after taking a pretty big defeat with the hiring of Fulmer as AD. From HOH's perspective ideally they wanted to fire Davenport along with Currie, but they had lost so much power of persuasion after Currie's debacle that they couldn't. Virtually everyone except HOH wanted Fulmer, and as powerful as HOH is, they need at least some support from others to do what they want.

Remember, DiPietro is about to retire himself. Now that Davenport has been removed, HOH is set up well to have a lot of say in who the next President and Chancellor of UTK are. Unfortunately I think it means a continuance of the never-ending politics and dysfunction at the top. Fulmer is likely to end up with a boss and a boss's boss that make his life more difficult.

If I’m looking at this from a “what will keep Tennessee down” standpoint, there’s NO DOUBT that I’d prefer Jeremy Pruitt to Mike Leach. Leach was a known, proven commodity with tons of experience as head coach and all sorts of positive intangibles. Pruitt? Not even the best coordinator available, with no head coaching experience.

Mullen was the primary recruiter for more Gator players than I can mention here, and held his own at Miss State, and is doing very good so far as HC at Florida. And it’ll get even better once he gets the offense rolling

well, there's another thing i was thinking about that could buck the conventional thinking about this move, and it's that if HOH is asserting it's control again, and HOH is going to get their pick of who's the next president and chancellor, why make Joe D pull that trigger now? hoh's next president could have done that once in place. nothing is going to prevent Joe D from retiring, so it's just a matter of time before HOH would get their guy in, so what's the rush??

so yeah....there could be something to that. and it could just be that she wasn't very good at her job, like the letter said.

we'll know the real story once replacements get hired. i find it hard to believe Joe D will be hiring Bev's permanent replacement btw.

I agree, that is kinda why I was thinking this could be a last ditch slap in the face to the HOH, or that a changing of the guard was in place. Like you said why the rush if Dr. J is retiring regardless and they could do it all at once if this is a Haslam shenanigan. I just keep thinking back to comments made by Dr. J at Bev's introduction about how great she was and all her qualifications and how she was going to make UT's flagship campus so much better and now here we are 15 months later and (if real) his letter to her sounded completely that opposite.

The general thinking is that they don't want the next President's first act to be firing the Chancellor. That's a bad look. So have DiPietro fire the Chancellor now, then he retires. Then get a new President (picked by HOH), who hires a new Chancellor (picked by HOH).

I could see the specific HOH play at the moment being to get a Davenport underling as interim Chancellor and then push to have the interim tag removed once the new President is hired. That way it is highly likely to be someone under total control of HOH and without a lot of power themselves.

It's truly sad to have to say this, but from HOH's perspective the worst thing to have happen is for Tennessee football to begin to rebound and for Pruitt to succeed. They absolutely want Fulmer out as AD - in fact, I think the proximate cause of Davenport's firing was signing Fulmer to that extension - but as long as the football program is on a upward trajectory he won't be able to remove Phil.

I'm going to ask this question in this thread as I didn't want to start a new thread...but when the Currie texts were made public were there any mentions of the Haslams in any of those texts?

I don't recall but I simply scanned a few pages and got the gist of it from this board. I'm reading about the HOH and their influence over UT athletics and was curious if there was anything in the texts.

Hats off to her for rejecting Schiano and getting rid of Currie. Hope this doesn't mean Haslam is taking back control.

Unfortunately yes, 1st step. President DePE is under their knuckles. He is retiring in a year. Interium Chancelor until the new president is seated. Remember all the reduction of state BOT members we been hearing about lately? And Haslem stacking the BOT with his buddies? When Bill leaves the Goveronors seat he is moving to the UT president's seat to entrench the Haslem power back at UT. Say what you will about Bev, but she stood up to the H's twice, once on the outsourcing situation, the second Currie. Haslem's don't like being told no by anyone. This move should be no shock to anyone.

the only thing i would say to that is, since when does HOH care about looking bad??? they've got that market cornered. Go Browns! lol.
