Danny O"Brien dismissed from team

If you fail one of those tests you are going to be tested again that's on you for doing it again and again. The timing is what it is. He was probably tested prior to Saturday.

It's just like when Butch suspends players when they're charged with anything. Didn't help us with the contrived Title IX lawsuit, but when our own fans were second guessing him, he had his record straight. Same will come out of this. Some journalist looking to make a name for themselves will call out major programs for their disciplinary policies and Tennessee will have their ducks in a row. You're welcome in advance. :)

Kid gets carried off on a stretcher and hospitalized. Then, a day later is kicked off the team. It's just bad optics. It's all about perception. Opposing coaches know some 17 year old recruit isnt going to consider team/AD policy. They can spin it as cruel and unusual. "You see what UT does to its own when you make a mistake"? It's not right, but I could see it happening. Negative receuiting is a huge deal for every SEC team.

They can spin it however they want, the kids and parents know ahead of time if they get busted they are on their own. My kid plays college baseball and we both know that the staff can only do so much to save you. We know the consequences up front. There is a line, if that line is crossed it's all over. The only one to blame is the kid, they are kids and kids will mess up but I pray every day for my kid to be blessed with good judgement to help him make the right decisions.

Any parent or player that hears this from a recruiter, already knows what's at stake and who is to blame in a situation like this and it's not the coach or the program.

IMO this is an example of CBJ doing what has to be done..It may be unpopular to folks on the outside, but if O'Brien knew the consequences of whatever he did and violated a team rule that incurred those consequences, CBJ had to do the right thing, even if it was/is unpopular..Saban or some other HC's might have handled it differently, who knows? But the word character is used a bunch by CBJ and IMO nothing builds character more than tough life lessons learned...

It doesn't say anything about drugs. It questions the timing and motives of the dismissal.

You have to actually read the article. Also, look at the comments at the bottom. Some are saying it was okay till he couldn't play, then they threw him away.

And "some" don't matter. The coach has to abide by university policy. Commenters have to click on a story...different responsibilities. :)

...if the hospital in College Station released the results of a drug screen to UT without Danny's permission they would be in violation of HIPAA and could face serious consequences.

Again, thats not what happened. Random drug test are given midweek the results usually don't come back until the following Monday. This was not Danny's first offense, in the words of Steve Spurrier "3 pots and your done"

Steve Spurrier's rule on marijuana use is '3 pots and you're finished' - SBNation.com

I'm a pro weed member of NORML and proud of it. That said, the laws are what they are and the rules are what they are. Im not going to trash DO and speculate why he was dismissed but just take it on face value, he violated team rules and was dismissed. Any player violating rules and/or laws if the enforcement aspect is above board and equally applied to the best player on the team down to the least walk on, then I'm good with it.

I read the article. Twice. And you also are basing your opinion off of random comments at the bottom of the article?

I don't remember many names on here but yours seems to pop up a lot because of drivel like this. To me you come off as someone desperate for attention and desperate for people to notice and talk to you, good or bad.

Hey pot, why are you calling kettle black for? And you seem to do it all the time. :good!:

Then you see the first sentence where a national news article on CBS sports calls it very interesting timing.

And yes, recruits read comments too.

Not sure exactly what you're advocating. Let this one slide? Because it looks bad?

It's a terribly written article designed to get clicks. The injury and his dismissal are in no way related and anyone who understands the process can see that

I certainly hope that Jones is so noble that he would do the right thing regardless of the "optics" or some negative consequences.

However.... I'm not sure there's a lot of choice in the matter if O'Brien reached his max for failed drug tests.... assuming that's what it is.

Weed should be legalized in Tennessee but not 100 percent legal. I mean you shouldn't be able to walk into a restaurant, roll a joint, and start puffin' away. You're should be able to smoke in your home or certain designated places. In fact, it should break down like this. It will be legal to buy it, legal to own it and, if you're the proprietor of a weed bar, legal to sell it. It will be legal to carry it, which doesn't really matter 'cause -- if the cops stop you, it will be illegal for them to search you. Searching you is a right that the cops in Tennessee will not have.

If this was a first or second offense for DO then he would have just been ruled out for bama and no one would have questioned it. That's impossible to do on the third strike with mandatory dismissal

Screw the optics. Team rules are what they are. Want to play? Follow them or be dismissed. Apply rules uniformly and there is no optical or NCAA problem; one standard. This won't affect recruiting one iota.

Exactly he has no leg to stand on at that point

great movie

Clickbait articles are always spread through the media about teams and their discipline. But I swear, seems like we have the only AD that takes flack for following the rules.

Absolutely insane.

This..

Think it goes something like this.. 1st offense punishment is left up to coaches discression, 2nd offense is an automatic suspension, 3rd offense and you're done..

So, for all this wisdom being shared about Cannabis/pot/marijuana and how the world would be better off with it legalized/made punishable by death, has any actually verified what the cause of the dismissal was? So far I saw a suggestion that it MIGHT have been a drug test result. But at this point it seems dead hookers in a closet are running a close second and really, if thats the case, what have 45 pages on our beloved blog accomplished?

just asking

This is where I am too. If you can't avoid weed for a few months because IT IS AGAINST THE RULES then that might indicate a problem. It should be legal you say? Well it's not yet so stay within the framework of the rules and you'll have no problems. Be rebellious and watch from the sidelines.
