Could apathy return if...

Losing interest in a team quite literally makes you less of a fan than someone who's always dedicated to supporting their team win or lose. No one's saying it makes you a bad person, but don't claim to be a die hard if you're only acting like one when it's convenient for you.

Well said

9-3 today is the same as 8-3 25 years ago.

Acting like 9-3 is "great"... or some how besting what our "history" says it should be is ridiculous.

And playing bama every year doesn't change that. Y'all wanna know why 7-8 wins is what our history says it is? Cause relative to the quality of teams we play year in year out were usually just better than 7-8 teams.

Our seasons generally have always boiled down to 2-3 games no matter how many games we play.... be it auburn, bama back in our 9, 10, or 11 game seasons or fl, ga, bama in the current 12 game schedule.

The line of demarcation is when we're as good/better than those 2-3 teams, not with those 7-8 teams. And that is what separates good/average seasons from great ones.

To me, a 9-3 season now is like an 8-4 season years ago.

Until the past three seasons, Going back to Fulmers last several years, I didn't plan my holidays around our bowl games. The first decade of Fulmer's tenure, watching bowl games was enjoyable. The fiasco of the '01 SECCG made that years bowl mute. Add in CLK one year with Dooleys first and it was just terrible. But then again, we've been playing in low tiered bowls against over ranked opponents.

The 12th game is not an effort to add competition to the schedule, just money to the coffers. Meaning, the addition of that 12th game doesn't really affect the L column...

8-3 schedule + utc, Indiana st, etc....= 9-3.

You're not going to be offended by every single post that doesn't agree with you are you?

If you're not happy with the direction the football program is going............leave. There is a message there so long as there aren't others willing and able to take up the slack and buy those seats. I don't think we're there yet. We have a vocal minority of fans that are going to complain unless we win the national championship. What a miserable existence they must live.

And you should go support your son's team regardless of how the Vols are doing.

Even if we win a national championship, they will keep complaining. They might shut up for 30 to 90 days, but they would feel their complaining inspires championships. Not just miserable, but pompous as well.

So Nega's are miserable and trying to make everyone else as miserable as they are to fill some void in their hateful, loser souls. And Sunshiner's are pathetic sidewalk fans who see UT Football as the only positive thing in their life, so they can't countenance any criticism leveled at the program.

Wouldn't it be easier, and much more pleasant if we just agreed we all love the program, just might have differing opinions about it's direction, and agreed to disagree.

Yes, it would be both easier and more pleasant. But it would not be much fun.

I agree with the thought process of the 5-7 seasons. But, I have to throw in the '15 season. We SHOULD have been, maybe, 12-2 that year. At worse 11-3 depending on the bowl game and maybe as lucky as 13-1 under that same condition. That let down against Oklahoma and again against Florida coupled with the Arkansas fiasco brought the apathy out in me. Now, I do think Bama played down to us that week and that loss is one we probably would have had any way.

Do you know what apathy means?

If you say so. Or maybe it just means that I love my University, and question the leadership.

You are literally saying that someone who loses interest is somehow not less of a fan than someone who still has interest. That doesn't even make sense.

My interest in my University is the very reason I will vote with my dollars. I love everything about the Hill, and choose not to support that which I disagree with for that very reason. I don't believe blindly supporting mediocrity in leadership as the best way to support the Vols. But that's just for me....you do what you want.

I know this is a complex concept, so let me know if you need more explanation.

Just so everyone knows.... The concessions at the games and alot of other items are already contracted out. UT really doesn't care if you attend the game either. Ticket outlets have already purchased tickets before the season each season. So, the only way game day has an impact is if companies like Aramark bid lower for concessions. Same for T-shirts and other items. They buy predetermined alottments (Wal-Mart) etc..

You're right...and I get that, of course.

Like everything else on a large scale the impact wouldn't be immediate. It would show up in the future contracts.

Honestly, I haven't been to a game since Dooley's second season. I did notice that the concessions were (cheaper). Could get a combo for what the Smokey dog cost years earlier.

So your go to defense mechanism is to insult the other person's intelligence for pointing out a very simple logical flaw in what you're saying?

I guess two can play that game, so here's a simple explanation of a complex concept for you:

Fan 1 supports team no matter what, win or lose

Fan 2 only supports team when it is convenient for him (winning)

Fan 1 team offers more support to his favorite team, therefore he is a bigger fan. If you're going to seriously quit on the team, that is literally the most basic definition of a fairweather fan. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

Again, you're treating this as if I'm accusing you of being a bad person or something. I'm clearly not - you can feel however you want about UT, that's your prerogative. But if you're going to quit on the team when times are even somewhat tough, don't pretend to be a die hard fan again when they start winning.

And again the concept alludes you. I had a long explanation typed, but realized this is becoming a silly, circular argument. We'll just agree to disagree, and hopefully part as friends and supporters of the same University.

Just be careful telling people what to and what not to call themselves when/ if they start winning. For me, the issues go far beyond Butch Jones and the Football team. It's only the most visible of the issues I'm referring to.

I don't think 6-6 will get him fired. We are stuck with him through 2018 unless we are 5-7 or less which won't happen. A Bowl game gets him another year, Unless Gruden is on the table! Buy out is way too much!!!

New AD in the picture and he's on a firing spree. Winterbotham gone, Serrano up next, most likely Holly after next BB season; heck Butch may not even survive at 7-5 especially if they lose to Vandy next year. New sheriff always wants his own posse.

He hasn't given any sign of a firing spree, by firing a second tier sport coach, give me a break.

He isn't going to fire Butch for a wining record, with an 8 million dollar buy-out! He is safe through 2018 season count on it!!!

Either way I think we finish 9-4 or 10-3 and we won't even have to worry about that anyway, JMHO. :)

I really don't think Butch is going anywhere anytime soon because he's actually learning that at an SEC program you have to be more a CEO than a coach; off season hires and replacing DC last year point that way anyway. I'm more in the 8-4 RS and most likely a bowl win. But who knows. I would sure like the team to stay healthy and give us one of those seasons to remember 1985, 1989 come to mind.
