If we have another 7/8 win season could the apathy that began to creep in 14 seasons ago come back? That culminated five years later with the '08 season.

However, during the lucky '07 season things were looking better. That Tennessee football was turning the corner. That apathy had subsided. But, was that only an outter covering of apathy and other major problems.

So, VN experts and trolls alike, if we have a subpar season similar to last years, will you find something else to do on Saturdays besides traveling to Knoxville?

Depends on if butch is fired and who the new hire is. But butch won't be fired unless we go 6-6

Is having 97,000 at games instead of 102,000 really considered apathy? I don't think Vol fans have an ounce of apathy

I think one of the articles stated that by the end of the season it went from a high of 97,000 to 20,000 empty seats.

Apathy has already set in for myself and others I know. I'm playing a wait-and-see for the first few games before completely signing off, but the second half of last season caused me to rethink my support for this staff and administration.

Couple that with the fact that my son going to be a College freshman football player this year, and my attention will have to be earned.

Apathy is the University of Memphis giving out all the free lower level basketball tickets that they can for 3 years in a row so the FedExForum doesnt kick them out for failing to meet minimum attendance thresholds.

300 comments on the #52 ranking for Butch shows this isnt an apathetic fan base.

Pining away for those bygone days of consecutive 5-7 seasons I guess?

Geez folks, it isn't like we are terrible so get over it. 9-4 is above our historical average. Yes, I want more too, but stop making it sound like the last two seasons have been in the toilet. They haven't been. Now, those 5-7 seasons were in the toilet...and they weren't that long ago.

I agree with the thought process of the 5-7 seasons. But, I have to throw in the '15 season. We SHOULD have been, maybe, 12-2 that year. At worse 11-3 depending on the bowl game and maybe as lucky as 13-1 under that same condition. That let down against Oklahoma and again against Florida coupled with the Arkansas fiasco brought the apathy out in me. Now, I do think Bama played down to us that week and that loss is one we probably would have had any way.

If you can't get excited for Tennessee football when August rolls around - then not sure you are really a fan.

Seriously the last two years have been filled with lots more wins than losses and some very exciting games. Game after game after game of blowouts with no hope of having a winning season is what drives apathy.

Well good luck If you cannot support this team. They will do well anyway.

They only looked better because they got to the SEC CG. That team was hammered by Cal, UF, & Bama. Do you think UF fans feel all warm and fuzzy about their program because they went to the SEC CG the last 2 seasons? It's not a measure that everything is OK.

As far as apathy goes, I think it could. The same "true fans" that telling posters to go cheer for some other team were spewing the same crap up until the day Dooley was fired.

Where, and when did I say I don't support the TEAM? That never changes. I said I will be spending my $$ and time elsewhere until I see something different from this staff.

This is a circular argument that never ends, so there is no need to argue it. Some of us will never agree on Butch, and our different views of program expectations. That doesn't make us less or more of a fan, just people with different opinions.

That's exactly how I've felt since Dooley. And Butch hasn't changed anything.

I'm not a daily poster but more of a lurker. I will say I was glued to Volnation, and any and all Vol news the past two offseasons in anticipation for what was thought by most to be east championships at the least. The offseason felt like a few years. This year, not so much. Much more passive with staying up to date on the week to week stuff. The season will get here when it gets here. Expectations, for me at least, have been tempered.

In all seriousness I do believe we have a few self absorbed fans who think a slight dip in attendance or a couple of loud dissenters really spells trouble for us. Let's be judgment day honest here....99% of the programs in America would give anything to have the fan support the Vols have...and it's kinda silly it has to be said out loud like that..,my aching back!!!

I'm just curious....are the self absorbed fans the ones who simply answered the question submitted by the OP, or are they some other nefarious group yet to be identified?
