Cord cutter here, and I have a question..

Just a heads up that Amazon has their Firestick on sale for $19.99 (39.99) and the Firestick 4 K for $24.99 (49.99). Must have if you have Amazon Prime. Easy to jailbreak (takes 3 minutes) and download free apps. Great gift idea. No, I don't work for Amazon!
Firesticks doesn't compare to some of the android devices on the market, i think it's because most people aren't aware that there are way better devices out there. If it's within ones budget, there is no better streaming device available than the nvidia shield. Once owning one you will never want anything else.

Well, yeah, if you want to spend 200$. But, for twenty bucks I can buy a spare one to have just in case. And if you're not needing a gaming center, it's hard to beat the Firestick (which is and android device).

I guess it depends on how you want to use it. As my main source of tv i didnt mind spending the money, bought two actually. The firesticks work no doubt, but my experience with them is you can load them down with to many sizable apps without them freezing and acting flakey due to a small amount of ram and memory. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

There are also cheap ways to increase the storage of the Firestick

But, as you say, "Different strokes..." .

Im just not a fan of the amazon interface myself. I like adjusting the home screen the way i want it. I think the coolest thing ive saw on the shield is the forced an update during march madness and it was awesome, hoping they do that again this year. You could pull the bracket up and click any team on the bracket and it would either give you the highlights of a game they just played or go straight to the live game. You could also create your own bracket and see other peoples bracket. It was pretty cool.

This. (Except the gaming center part because Nvidia’s game streaming is fantastic). Comparing the shield to the fire stick is apples to oranges based on cost. The shield is definitely better, but is it worth the price for most people? I’d guess not.

I have both, and sure the shield is a little zippier and has more to offer, but for watching Netflix and YouTube TV/Hulu/whatever, most people probably wouldn’t notice the difference. The fire stick is solid for the price, especially with these deals.

I've got a not-smart TV with a blu ray DVD player connected to it that has the Netflix app built in that I've used to watch Netflix on for years. But I've gotten notices from Netflix that my blu ray device won't be able to stream Netflix as of Dec. 1. The TV is fine. There is a USB port on the back.

Will one of these sticks y'all are talking enable me to stream Netflix -- or should I just go and buy a new DVD player with streaming apps built in?

Thank you.

The Firestick requires an HDMI connector, so, if you have an empty port, the Firestick would be the cheaper way to go. If your tv doesn't have an HDMI port, you could probably buy nice new smart t.v. for probably the price you paid for your bluray. But, wait for "Cyber Monday".

What's the advantage of these android devices over firestick? Not debating but would like to understand. I do like the firesticks and have not had issues at all with them. Want to see if there is value for me in considering an android streaming device you mention.

Gotta agree with randyd, my shield blows everything away with app load times and just general responsiveness. I use my shield though for streaming and some game streaming. Shield is also beefy enough to run Plex media server if you have a NAS (not sure how many transcodes it will handle though). I have a homemade NAS on the backend running Plex that handles all my media content and OTA recordings for the family. Unfortunately the newer shields are kinda pricey at $200. The 2017 model shields could be had for around $120 this time last year. I guess it all depends on what you want to use it for, if you are just streaming live tv you will be fine with a roku/ firestick/ android box.

They're reputed to be fantastic for gaming and watching anime.

Im following this thread and I’ve been a cord cutter for about 8 months. I would recommend a simple Roku to start. It has everything you’ll need and it’s the easiest to set up. I have a firestick, old appletv, a smart tv and roku. They are all pretty simple but I personally like the roku the best. I subscribed to directnow, slingtv, and youtubetv and Youtubetv won easily. I recently added a bundle pkg of disneyplus, espn+.

Another heads up on this Firestick deal. When you purchase, you receive promo code for 15 $/off per mth for 3 months for Sling TV. I'm not interested in Sling as I get more than enough crap on the Firestick. I wish I could give ya'll the code, but I think it's linked to my purchase.

Does ESPN+ carry all games? I'm wondering because I did the bundle for Disney plus since I already have HULU. ESPN+ comes with the bundling, All for 12 bucks plus change. Any one know?
No they mostly cover the Mid major conferences and games.

Comcast is coming with a 180 channel streaming service along with 400bps internet for $90. I don't know the channel lineup (just signed yesterday) yet but hoping they overlap with Hulu so I can dump it. Comcast has been storing data (creating a profile) for several years from the in-home black box data (what you watch and when combined with basic contact info). They are now offering an advertising program to businesses that can be specific to location and profile preferences. That means you and your neighbor can watch the same program but get different advertising. They need to increase the amount of streamers and black box users to drive the system so I expect prices will continue to fall. I will advise the channel lineup when I have it.
After your promotional period it will be 200$

I struggle to justify Nvidia. I have 5 firesticks in my house (4k on living room tv) and Hulu LIVE. Never had an ounce of trouble streaming with no fewer than 3 devices going at once (Disney+, Hulu, Netflix) on 300mbps internet and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything? I have little kids, so I'm not gaming, mostly just streaming.

Does anyone have YouTube tv that can share their experience? I have HULU live which I love but they keep increasing the price so exploring other options.
I have it. It has pretty much everything I need, I haven't missed any games and you tell it what teams you follow and it records them all for you to watch again later. Unlimited recording, or archiving.

I don't disagree at all. My point is that 5 years from now You Tube TV will probably cost the same as people are paying for DirecTV today.

The streaming revolution will just be a cheaper way to get content out. No buying dishes, launching satellites or paying installers. But the content costs what the content costs and in the long run we won't really see any savings.
Except we won't be locked in to contracts. Once they start requiring contracts they'll lose customers in a hurry.

Nothing wrong with a firestick if your happy with it, i myself just dont like them for the amount of ram and memory. If you like tons of apps theu are just not the best option. For example, kodi is a huge build and they reccomend putting a lite version of kodi on firesticks due to the memory. Android boxes have usb ports for expandable storage. You can also use an air mouse with a usb dongle. Most android boxes come with a minimum of 16 gigs of memory, which is quite a bit, as long as your not downloading. They make a box you can buy off ebay or amazon called H96 max that you can buy for $40. Its a really nice box for the money and has 4 gigs of ram and 32 gigs of memory and can stream 4k easily. Only thing os the remote sucks, but you can get a nice airmouse for $10 bucks also on ebay. And as i said in an earlier post, if you want the best of the best, nothing is as good as an nvidia shield, but their $200. The nvidia software cant be beat for the smoothest streaming.
