College Hoops Hiring/Firing Thread

McMahon at LSU IMO. Though I'm surprised he'd go there with the NCAA trouble. He could have easily gotten another P5 job.
I think he’s a fine coach. I don’t expect that he’ll perform any better than Wade has, especially without the benefit of cutting checks to players. And he’s had a few clunkers. Like even last year. Paris has exceeded expectations in every season minus his first, and in a league that continues to get better.

OVC > Southern. 4 first places finishes in conference the last 5 years. 2 round of 32 appearances, 1 first round exit.

Although it was smart to get out before the move to the MVC.

It’s not a done deal, but looks like Frank Martin is headed to UMASS. I don’t think Martin is that great of a coach, but if it happens, that’s a pretty decent hire for UMASS.

I don’t think Martin is a bad coach. I think his time at KSU and Weber’s subsequent tenure shows that he was a good coach there. And even if he hadn’t made the final 4 at USC he had turned around the program and they were getting consistently better. I’m not sure what happened after that. Clearly expect a bit of a drop off afterwards, especially losing Thornwell, but he couldn’t regain any traction. I think a change of scenery will help him.

Interesting move out of IU....Fife was expected to be the coach in waiting at IU

Indiana assistant basketball coach Dane Fife has been relieved of his duties. Head Coach Mike Woodson released the following statement: “I am committed to doing what I believe is best for the continued growth of our men’s basketball program as we collectively work toward returning it to the upper echelon of college basketball,” said Woodson.

Word on the street is that Florida assistants Akeem Miskdeen and Eric Pastrana will head to Georgia with Mike White. Both assistants joined the UF staff last spring.

After reading some IU message boards, looks like Fife may have been forced on Woodson.

He was pretty good at K-State and South Carolina is such a hard job - maybe even harder than South Carolina football. He should have made more than 1 NCAAT in 10 years, but once he got his feet under him after taking the job he had only one year, the COVID year, that could be described as awful. 2017-18 wasn't good either, but he was at or above .500 a fair amount.

Agree UGA is definitely a football school but with their resources, location and being in the SEC it's still a potentially great job.
UGA football is Kansas basketball. The second Mangino brought Kansas football back to life he had to go. Can't steal any thunder from the basketball program. There was no real reason to fire Mangino except for the basketball program. Same thing would probably happen to UGA basketball if the program turned the corner.

Today's Rumors from HoopDirt.com

I can confirm that Bob Beaudine is running the Louisiana Tech search. I have heard that assistant coach Duffy Conroy is in the mix (may have already interviewed). Other names include Nicholls State head coach Austin Claunch and Texas Tech assistant Talvin Hester (was an assistant at La Tech from 2018-21). Sounds like they met with guys late last week and through the weekend.

Last Tuesday, I mentioned some early named at Chattanooga (DAILY DIRT – 3/22). It now sounds like VMI head coach Dan Earl needs to be added to this list. Chattanooga AD Wharton spent 25 years at Penn State prior to his time with the Mocs. Earl is former All-Big Ten player at Penn State, who spent 2006-11 as an assistant there.

A name picking up steam at Lafayette is Colgate assistant Mike Jordan. The former standout at Penn returned to Colgate last year after spending one season at Drexel. He had previously spent eight years (2012-20) with Matt Langel at Colgate. Jordan was the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2000, and Rookie of the Year in 1996. Lafayette has been focused on coaches with high academic coaching/playing background, so Jordan definitely fits the bill.

It sounds like UT Arlington assistant head coach Riley Davis is in the mix for a spot on Mike Schwartz’s new staff at East Carolina. Davis spent time as an administrative staffer at Tennessee while Schwartz was an assistant there.

No secret here – a lot of guys have already reported on this one, but Memphis assistant Cody Toppert is headed to LSU with Matt McMahon. Toppert was with the Director of Payer Development with the Phoenix Suns before joining Penny Hardaway’s staff in 2019. Good move to bolt Memphis before the NCAA brings the hammer down.

That is beyond stupid if the "player abuse" allegations were just a cover and that is why his firing actually occurred. There is way more $$$$ to be made in football than basketball, almost no matter how bad your football team is and no matter how good your basketball team is. And it isn't a zero sum game anyway.

Duke is one of the only (perhaps the only) major basketball programs that brings in more money from basketball than football. UK brings in way more money from football than basketball. It isn't even close. Yes - that is due to their membership in the SEC, but Kansas and UNC bring in more money from football too.

What you mean Mangino was forced because of repeated instances of being a sh***y person. Don’t bring facts into such a more exciting narrative.

You're misunderstanding...I'm saying that it is stupid if Mangino was fired for "stealing thunder from the basketball program" rather than being an a-hole to everyone he came into contact with.

...and he was fired because he had regressed badly from that 12-win season + he was an a-hole. If they were still winning games, he would not have been let go.

Which is funny because that 5-7 season is better than any season they've had since.
