Coaching Search Thread

Weren't there some NCAA issues at Kansas state when underwood was an assistant there ??

If so no shot we chance it at this time

Not expecting a great hire this time around. Hard to believe anyone proven will want to come be part of a dumpster fire.

Someone in this very thread posted Brad Stevens earlier today. Unfortunately, I think they were serious

He is a great coach and would probably turn us into a national power. Of course we will never get him. I'm already decided to accept a mid major guy and not get excited for no reason.

As far as I know that one was on Frank Martin (a player got a wire transfer before NCAA Tournament in 2012), but maybe the search firm can answer that?

By the way I haven't been in here lately, but Austin Ward (covers OSU) said Archie Miller is holding out for OSU job. Thad Matta apparently has serious health concerns or something, so...yeah.

He had some kind of surgery that left him with a "dead foot" is what they said during the Arizona game. He has no feeling in one of his feet. Not sure if it's more than that or not, but sounds pretty miserable.

Can we start one where we keep it to legitimate names (no Smarts, Pearls, Marshalls, etc.)?

Based on UTs last 4 hires, who were all mid-majors, here's who I see as legitimate names:

Will Wade (UTC HC) - won't move the national meter much.

Bobby Hurley (Buffalo HC) - in line for a big-time HC job in next few years, but can he recruit in the south.

Ron Hunter (Ga St. HC) - he would be near the top of my list.

Steve Prohm (Murray St. HC) - also in line for a big-time HC job in next few years. This would be a solid hire.

Michael White (LA Tech HC) - he turned UT down once and I don't see them going back down that road.

Rick Byrd (Belmont HC) - it wouldn't be a good coaching search thread without throwing his name in. He would stabilize the program and run a clean program, but age and energy are a factor.

Rick Stansbury (former Miss St. HC) - this would be intriguing. Had no NCAA issues despite what some think.

Please add to the list if I have left someone legitimate out.

Additional names:

Ben Jacobsen (Northern Iowa HC)

Chris Mack (Xavier HC)

Brad Underwood (SFA HC)

Andy Toole (Robert Morris HC)

Billy Donlon (Wright St. HC)

Richard Pitino, Jr. (Minnesota HC)

Danny Hurley (Rhode Island HC)

I'd at least contact Shaka Smart. How long you gonna stay at a program like VCU? Money talks...open up the check book and quit spinning your wheels with these petty hires. We are not known to be a basketball school, but we have elite facilities and a big name hire would go a long way towards changing that. I just want a fairly young, enthusiastic, proven players coach that can bring in high rated talent. Things ain't changing with these mid-tier unproven hires. Butch wasn't a household name when we hired him, but Cincy was a respectable program and had the mentioned above attributes as a coach. I'd love to get Archie Miller from Dayton but he just recently signed a long extension at Dayton. Bottom line... spend to get a coach that will turn things around or just be satisfied with mediocrity and wasting a nice arena like TBA with half filled seats.

Ben Howland was the only out-of-work coach I had any interest in. If I had to pick... Dino Gaudio? :/

Rick Barnes would be a homerun, IMO. He's on a short leash at Texas right now and would probably be fine with moving on. He's the classic example of staying in one place too long. He's a hell of a coach and a good recruiter too. His Texas teams always fare well in the tourney.

Ahh I believe Barnes is past his prime. He's just like Fulmer is his later years. He's lost that fire and got to complacent.
