Coaching Search Thread

I'd at least contact Shaka Smart. How long you gonna stay at a program like VCU? Money talks...open up the check book and quit spinning your wheels with these petty hires. We are not known to be a basketball school, but we have elite facilities and a big name hire would go a long way towards changing that. I just want a fairly young, enthusiastic, proven players coach that can bring in high rated talent. Things ain't changing with these mid-tier unproven hires. Butch wasn't a household name when we hired him, but Cincy was a respectable program and had the mentioned above attributes as a coach. I'd love to get Archie Miller from Dayton but he just recently signed a long extension at Dayton. Bottom line... spend to get a coach that will turn things around or just be satisfied with mediocrity and wasting a nice arena like TBA with half filled seats.

Shaka Turned down UCLA. No way in hell he's come here.

I want him back but kind of pointless to talk about something that can never happen. I wish petition morons understood this about Perl a year ago - then you would not have to ask this question since Cuonzo would still be here.

Lmao!!!!

I couldn't understand why he wasn't in mix last year. No buyout. We paid USM 500k to get CDT for one season

Not sure, but I've heard that based not the dismissal for cause means we no longer pay any more buyout to USM. I think we've paid half, which means we don't pay the other half. Not certain about recouping the part we've already paid. That's completely a repeat of what I thought I heard.

I honestly don't care. We have inept leadership and I have little confidence that a good hire will be made. Tennessee will be shopping in the bargain basement department for the new basketball coach and most of the time you get what you pay for. I say give the young guy Wade a shot and see what he can do.

Hart said in presser that UT paid the buyout to USM in a lump sum 500k payment when the CDT hire was completed.

Shaka Turned down UCLA. No way in hell he's come here.

Adam Kilgore, The Washington Post PORTLAND, Ore. – To answer one of the most puzzling questions in college basketball, start with one of the worst days in Shaka Smart's life. He was 19 years old, raised by a single mother in Madison, Wisconsin. He uprooted to Kenyon College in Ohio because the coach, Bill Brown, became a father figure during his recruitment. And then, after Smart's freshman season, Bill Brown left.

What is Shaka Smart still doing at Virginia Commonwealth? Why does the coach who led a mid-major to the Final Four four years ago spurn UCLA and Marquette and Wake Forest and anyone else who asks? Start at Kenyon College, and then look here: The VCU media guide includes each player's parents in his profile. For five of them there is a mother or grandmother listed, and no father. Smart will not make his players feel the way Bill Brown made him feel.

"That experience had an influence in my life in general," Smart said. "That was one of the worst days in my life, to be honest with you. It really shook me up."

Good coach and, based on this article, good man...don't think he'll be leaving VCU anytime soon.

You are probably right but you at least got to contact him. Maybe he has no interest in living on the west coast. You never know the circumstances when there's a family involved and not just an individual. That may be why he chooses to stay at VCU. Still gotta try before you go after the bargain bin guys.

Hire Smart - give the wife a high paying job at UT as a professor if thats whats keeping her at VCU -- heck just give her Cheeks job and tell him to retire now.

#1. Fire Hart, and hire Blackburn and he can bring his coach with him.
#2. Hurley
#3. Drew
#4. Somebody we haven't heard of.

Quit hoping for the Shaka's and Marshall's of the world. At UT, the basketball coach will NEVER make more than the Football coach. Shaka reportedly turned down 3mil from Bama.

Jimmy Cheek will need to go with Hart to truly fix the problem.

Has of right now after all the coaches UT has gone through the only thing I do not want to see for UT to hire someone who has gotten fired this year from another program. I would rather see them just hire someone who is from a mid major. From what I hear with the money the way it is around the UT athletic dept, a mid major would be about what they can afford.

Rick Barnes would be my first legitimate call.

Sources: Rick Barnes not expected to return to Texas | CollegeBasketballTalk

"One potential landing spot for Barnes is Tennessee, sources said, with one source adding the job is “absolutely” his if he wants it. Barnes’ wife, Candy, is a Tennessee alum."

Omg at the end of the article Buzz Williams is listed as a candidate to replace Barnes. Buzz...just capsized VT with an 11-22 record.

I would take Barnes over Williams easy.
