Coaching Search Thread

@jerrymeyer247: Not expecting assistant coaching changes at Texas. I'm expecting an entirely different coaching staff there next year.

Rick Barnes thoughts? Not done much lately but was very successful in early Texas career and at Providence. Also pretty good recruiter.

Barnes is contemplating retirement.

Has other goals in life.

A take on the OP list;

Will Wade (UTC HC) - Fall-back candidate. Might be the best option, if Hart strikes out on premiere candidates.

Bobby Hurley (Buffalo HC) - Will be a great hire, for however long he would stay. The HBC's at both Duke and UNC are getting a bit "long in the tooth." If Hurley comes to UT and has success (as he most likely would,) the big shots on "the Hill" would be hard-pressed to keep him. If hired, Hurley would most likely be gone in less than 3 years.

Ron Hunter (Ga St. HC) - The top of the "fall-back" list. It is very likely that Ron Hunter will end up being our guy.

Steve Prohm (Murray St. HC) - As OP said, would be a solid hire. Solid...but not spectacular. If UT wants to use this opportunity to hire someone who can, in time, take down Kentucky... Steve Prohm isn't the guy.

Michael White (LA Tech HC) - Very similar to Steve Prohm. Might be slightly better hire than Prohm, but doesn't appear to have the 'juice' to get the Vols to elite status.

Rick Byrd (Belmont HC) - Good move for stability and competiveness on the court. However, can he make the Vols special? He probably deserves the chance to find out.

Rick Stansbury (former Miss St. HC) - Good guy, but I hope the Vols aren't looking in his direction. He's had his chance at coaching in the SEC. He wasn't a failure... but he's not special. It would feel a bit like Hart has given up on men's hoops, should he hire Stansbury.

Ben Jacobsen (Northern Iowa HC) - Great coach. Consistent winner. It would be fun to see what this guy could do at a place with the resources of UT. Needs to be at the very top of the wish list.

Chris Mack (Xavier HC) - Another consistent winner. Seems to always out-coach the opposition. Coaches a tough brand of basketball. His teams are reminiscent of Don DeVoe's early UT clubs.

Brad Underwood (SFA HC) - LOVE this guy. May be the perfect fit for our fan-base. Macho, in-your-face basketball that is fun to watch... and would seem an appealing style for elite ballers to play. Not sure if Underwood is as flamboyant, but he could be the closest thing to the second coming of Bruce Pearl that the Vols could hope for.

Andy Toole (Robert Morris HC) - Good coach...but not all that special. Vols would be competitive, but that's as far as it would go.

Billy Donlon (Wright St. HC) - Decent record but has been overshadowed by the coaches at Xavier and Dayton. Not a top tier candidate. Vols would be "settling" if Billy Donlon turns out to be the hire.

Richard Pitino, Jr. (Minnesota HC) - Good lineage, but let him stay in Golden Gopher land.

Danny Hurley (Rhode Island HC) - This would be a great hire. He has rebuilt two programs and UT would be his 3rd stop and, thus, more likely a destination job for Danny as opposed to Bobby. When UNC or Duke come calling, UT would have an easier time persuading a successful Danny Hurley to stay.

Rick Barnes (Texas HC) - If we're going to dream... it's better to dream of Marshall or Smart. Marshall and Smart have done much better than Barnes, without Kevin Durant.

Buzz Williams (VA Tech HC) - Buzz Williams seems (and sounds) an awful lot like Buzz Peterson. Do you really want "Buzz-Ball" part two?

Additions to OP's list:

GREGG MARSHALL! - If the University of Tennessee wants to be more than competitive in men's hoops, this is the guy to get. Go camp out at his house. Stalk him. Leave cash and love letters in his mail box. Heck... go ahead and kidnap the guy. Marshall is the one guy who would eventually take down Kentucky...and take them down permanently.

Rick Barnes would be my first legitimate call.

Sources: Rick Barnes not expected to return to Texas | CollegeBasketballTalk

"One potential landing spot for Barnes is Tennessee, sources said, with one source adding the job is “absolutely” his if he wants it. Barnes’ wife, Candy, is a Tennessee alum."

I usually don't claim to be one of those guys with "sources" but I seriously expect Barnes to be out of coaching next season.

Vols would have to throw a huge sum of money at him to get his attention and that simply won't happen.

Prohm signed an extension with Murray St earlier today.

Agents and coaches everywhere love it when the Vols have an opening.

Same as Byrd to old to take on this challenge

The challenge isn't wins and lossss at this point. It's about stabilizing the program. We could lose up to 3 or 4 players. This rebuild is gonna be similar to Crean's first three years at Indiana. Gonna be 3 years to get back on solid ground. Would rather take a national name or proven winner like Barnes or Byrd respectively. People want to hire the mid major names thinking we are gonna be competing for a tourney bid next year. We are gonna be competing just field a roster.

This was from a Rucker article:

"Hart said head-coaching experience is preferred but not mandatory, and that SEC experience won’t be a deal-breaker, either. Hart also acknowledged that the salaries for college basketball coaches have risen from a national and SEC perspective in recent years, and that more traditionally mid-table-and-lower programs are dumping more and more money into the sport, and that it’s becoming tougher to get coaches to uproot their families if they have, say, a good job at a basketball-first mid-major program that treats the sport seriously and funds it accordingly."

Hart is setting us up for a real doozy of a hire. It will be awful.

No SEC experience sounds to me like he's setting us up for a great hire. He also basically said that money would not be an issue this time around because our athletic department was going great.

Underwood is our guy. Very hard working coach and his teams are fun to watch. Pretty good recruiter for a smaller school like SFA. We can get him if we really try and show him we are interested. I'm hoping hart has already spoken to him or is about to within 48 hours.

As long as they talk to Miller too just for kicks and grins.

Or you could take that the other way such as:
A coach doesn't need head coaching experience at all, much less SEC experience. He also says it's hard to get top mid major guys to move on from their jobs now, so don't expect it.

Gregg Marshall's biggest coaching decision of his life now awaits him - CBSSports.com

According to this... Marshall is willing to entertain an offer from the Bammers. If he would take a whiff of whatever they're shoveling down in Tuscaloosa, why not listen to Hart?

Mr. Hart, if Marshall takes your call, get them Haslam boys on three-way. Hire Marshall, then re-do Butch's contract for $2 more.
Because after Pearl left and Cuonzo we looked at him and said no thanks we have another guy. I think some bad blood would still be there. Also idk if we can match the 3.5-4 million dollar bar that alabama has set. If we hire him I'll be very surprised but also very pleased. Hope I'm wrong

Can we start one where we keep it to legitimate names (no Smarts, Pearls, Marshalls, etc.)?

Based on UTs last 4 hires, who were all mid-majors, here's who I see as legitimate names:

Will Wade (UTC HC) - won't move the national meter much.

Bobby Hurley (Buffalo HC) - in line for a big-time HC job in next few years, but can he recruit in the south.

Ron Hunter (Ga St. HC) - he would be near the top of my list.

Steve Prohm (Murray St. HC) - also in line for a big-time HC job in next few years. This would be a solid hire.

Michael White (LA Tech HC) - he turned UT down once and I don't see them going back down that road.

Rick Byrd (Belmont HC) - it wouldn't be a good coaching search thread without throwing his name in. He would stabilize the program and run a clean program, but age and energy are a factor.

Rick Stansbury (former Miss St. HC) - this would be intriguing. Had no NCAA issues despite what some think.

Please add to the list if I have left someone legitimate out.

Additional names:

Ben Jacobsen (Northern Iowa HC)

Chris Mack (Xavier HC)

Brad Underwood (SFA HC)

Andy Toole (Robert Morris HC)

Billy Donlon (Wright St. HC)

Richard Pitino, Jr. (Minnesota HC)

Danny Hurley (Rhode Island HC)

Rick Barnes (Texas HC)

Buzz Williams (VA Tech HC)
Why no Marshalls? Bammers are going after him and he's listening..

Marshall wanted to come here when he was at Winthrop.
Someone close to him said he'd never consider a school that had passed him over. That would eliminate UT.

Anyway, that makes him sound like a douche.

ok, i deleted my post in support of Tyndall before anyone could see that i made some bad decisions.......that said, my Wish List:

1. Wade
2. Crean
3. Underwood

and i am assuming money is no object this time around.

Crean not happening. 12 mil buyout that doesn't drop until July. Crean had one, maybe two years at IU.
