The question isn’t valid. Everyone knows we need better talent and better coaching. The coaches aren’t responsible for poor execution.
Don’t quite understand this. Coaches do more than draw up game plans. They teach fundamentals like tacking, how to cover receivers, how deep to drop for LBers, how much they play off the receivers, etc. Top 15 or better recruiting for 4 years plus portal hires, and they should have enough talent to play with Illinoi. Apparently they practice like they play, only the 1st string get any serious coaching. As for a future QB, they better find a winner, a leader, not a manager, regardless how they do on average. They need someone that can play over their head and lead others to do the same. Not getting a championship QB from the portal is unless its a lower Div which might be the way to go.

Maybe in 4 years figure out that linemen make up the sec. Never mind that Rocket joe was hypes guy 2 years in a row. Thankfully Hendon Hooker was a Rudy like all heart and tough as nails leader. I challenge hype to develop or play a young qb

Rocket Joe came out in the first game of the season Huepels first year.

Huepel fired the defensive coordinator. The offense arguably played well enough to possibly win all but 1 game this year.

So are you saying that Huepel should have gone to Merk at any point this year? Going with GMAC for any meaningful snaps would have only been acceptable if Joey and Merk are both hurt.

Year 5 losing in a MCB to a middle of the road team that will never ever compete in their conference for a championship is as bad a sign as it gets.

CJH can turn this around and with the class we have and the NIL we have it can be done quickly but sloppiness and lack of time management and not having backups ready to play in year 5 is unacceptable.

And anyone who says talent in year 5 is saying the coach hasn’t coached up the backups at all and have them ready.

Illinois had 2 losses against #1 and #2 team in the country. I also think they got beat by Washington in the rain so simmer down there.

Unpopular opinion, but Gmac should have been starting this game the minute the Vandy game was over.

Losing this game with Gmac showing flashes is 100000x better than losing how we did with Aguilar.

Not unpopular with me. I thought so as well.

When the season is effectively over (it was), move on to the future.

It may have also provided some cover for Huepel as well. Losing like that with a freshman instead of that dreadful performance with a 25 year old experienced QB.

No. Even way back when you cashed in the season after the Oklahoma game. No George is not ready. There is a reason why George only got the very few snaps he got this year. Late in the season it became obvious that Merk would go in the portal this the only playing time George would get would be if Joey was hurt or the game was out of hand. Do you think deep down anyone had confidence that with our defense we were putting anyone away for backups to get PT? It's comical listening to how wrong you can be every single time.

Ok S.A. say you play GMAC and he gets injured, are you ok with that? If by some miracle this judge rules before the portal opens Joey will be here in the spring competing for the starting job again.

Yes. They are paid. If Mac gets injured, get a portal QB, like they are likely to do anyway.

If Aguilar is back, you’ve lost nothing except a second year clipboard holder.

Protecting players is old news. GMac is likely to never take a meaningful snap here.

I did not watch the game in depth, but watching the defensive side of the football I saw a lot of guys that were undisciplined or indecisive or trying to do others’ jobs all of which will get you beat.
Our safeties have to come down and fill. I noticed several times in the last drive, even on obvious run downs where they would start and then hesitate and then have to chase.

Herring is a good rusher but lost in the run. He dipped his nose inside on a few crucial downs and let the them bounce runs. I think that is because he was trying to make a play that the safety should have made. Eason was gettting doubled and holding his own but nobody was filling through the clear space. Ready cloudy to clear and it isn’t that hard. We just looked like we were thinking way too hard and playing slow. That has been an issue with the lbs for years though. They are great athletes but play slowly.
